I will be in San Francisco from 9-12 September to take part in SF Shorts. Let's have a meetup!

My short film "A Doorman's Lullaby" will be playing as part of Program 1 on 10 September at 9:30 and on 12 September at 7:30 at the Red Vic Movie House in the Haight. I'm still working out my lodging, but someplace around the Haight would be great, and I'm a sucker for inexpensive and tasty.

Yes! Frjtz anyone?

just kidding about the Frjtz part.

What is Frjtz?

Frjtz is a great little crepe, fries and belgian beer place, but it's become a sort of SF bay area joke among MeFites because, like, 40 of our last 20 meetups have been there.

More like 60 of our last 20 meetups, eh?

There's that brewpub on Haight, although the last time I went I was not enamored of their beer. The only other place I go to in the Haight on a semi-regular basis is that Thai place that's on the second floor - it's sort of catty-corner from Amoeba, if you know what I mean. But I never go to bars in the Haight.

So I am useless, again, at picking a meetup spot. But I'll show up!

SF folks: Do you want to meet up on 12 September at 6pm? Any interested parties can attend the screening, as well.

Now pick a place. :)

hahahhahahah.

So will I.

There's no reason for me to think I'll be in town for it, but even so I vote you guys go the New Ganges a few blocks from the west end of Haight. The food is great and the owner is a really friendly guy who will chat you up and in all likelihood grab your fork and use it to feed you bites of food (this sounds potentially uncomfortable and you might be uneasy going in, but it'll turn out to be hilarious and fun.)

ooh matt, that looks good. I'm down for getting food first then migrating somewhere else for drinks.
posted by special-k at 2:32 PM on August 6, 2009

If I'm thinking of the right place, Martin Macks has a lot of space. It's two blocks from the Red Vic.

pxe2000: Did you shoot on an audiotape?

Club Deluxe on Haight near Ashbury is a great place - lots of tables, pizza on thursday and friday. Not crowded, no attitude, great drinks, live jazz at 9.

I live around the corner so I'm biased.

Other bars on Upper Haight are:
Trax, our local gay bar
Aub Zam Zam, the tiny cocktail place
Magnolia, the brew-pub which is always crowded but has great beer
The Gold Cane, dive bar extrodinaire
Murio's Trophy Room, another dive, only not as appealing
Hobson's Choice, punch room/meat market
Martin Macks, pub
Alembic, pricey cocktails

Another vote for Frijtz.

I go just for the wallpaper.

(I still can't figure out why that places is noisier than El Faro in the Mission at 1:45 in the morning. I'm pretty sure they mic the room and amplify the noise on hidden speakers.)

rtha, that's a favorite Thai place of mine. I have no idea what the name of it is.

What about Kan Zaman?

I probably won't make it to this meetup, so discount my advice as necessary: every time I have ever been to Kan Zaman with a large group they have not hesitated to tell us to GTFO when they wanted our tables. Apparently if you are there more than an hour and a half they feel they have the right to kick you out. They will even tell you not to order food that will take a long time to make if your time is running out. So, yeah.

If I was in the Haight and didn't want thai, I would probably go to the Alembic. Pricy but yummy drinks and bar food. Possibly too cozy for a meetup though. gyusan's suggestion of Club Deluxe is a good one.

Frijtz sounds good to me.

Here are my deets:

I will be flying in on 9 September and staying in SOMA from 9-12 September.

I'm down with anyplace that's cheap (unless someone wants to pay for my dinner -- ha ha ha). Frijtz sounds great!

12 September at Frijtz, possible screening after?
posted by pxe2000 at 9:50 AM on August 8, 2009

No, no, not Frijtz! Forget I even mentioned it. Frjtz is dead to us. There are no fries. The belgian beer is a myth. Other bars and restaurants need your patronage. Their fate rests on us. Don't let them down!
posted by iamkimiam at 10:06 AM on August 8, 2009 [1 favorite]

Agh! Okay!

12 September, you SF-ians pick a spot. I spent all my money on my flight and my hotel, so CHEAP is muy importante. :)

I love you Kim.

So how about Gold Cane (seems divey) or Magnolia?
posted by special-k at 1:54 PM on August 8, 2009

Of the two special-k suggested, I'm more interested in Magnolia.

12 September, 5:30/6-ish, Magnolia?
posted by pxe2000 at 10:47 AM on August 9, 2009

Not to be a killjoy, but Magnolia is not especially inexpensive and is awfully crowded. The food and beer are awesome, so I wouldn't want to entirely discourage you from going there, but it is a challenging place for a large group. Just so you're aware.
posted by team lowkey at 11:09 AM on August 9, 2009

pxe2000, if you're in SOMA, why not 21st Amendment everybody? Just throwing that out there...I don't have a preference at all (besides severe allergy to Frjtz) and so if Magnolia or anywhere else is preferable to others, then sweet!
posted by iamkimiam at 11:22 AM on August 9, 2009

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH YOU ARE TEARING ME APART LISA

12 September, 5:30/6-ish, 21st Amendment? Does this work for everyone else?
posted by pxe2000 at 11:31 AM on August 9, 2009

Well, the downside of 21st Amendment is that if you/we/some number of folk want to make your screening, we'll have about half an hour to meetup before everyone has to dash to MUNI/personal vehicles in order to get to the Red Vic on time.

Hmmm.
posted by rtha at 11:52 AM on August 9, 2009

Nothing wrong with 21A (we've had large meet-ups there before), except that it's faaar from the Red Vic, if you intend on going there afterwards.
posted by team lowkey at 11:53 AM on August 9, 2009

Should we plan the meetup for earlier in the day?
posted by pxe2000 at 12:41 PM on August 9, 2009

Okay.

Instead of saying "Hey, [X] sounds like a great place to meet!", I'm going to let the natives choose a place. :)
posted by pxe2000 at 12:51 PM on August 9, 2009

I think the Thai place on the second floor is Ploy II. They're terrific and pretty reasonable. Also, pretty quick when you need them to be (we went there before roller derby at Kezar). Only problem is they're kind of small, so we'd definitely need a head count and reservation. Though they're a great place, I'm not sure they fit the needs of the situation. Too bad Tornado/Rosamunde is about 10 blocks away. That's the kind of place that would be ideal for a meetup.
posted by jasper411 at 9:57 PM on August 9, 2009

The Toronado? It's small, busy, & loud.

21st Amendment works, though, if we pay attention to the N line schedule.
posted by Pronoiac at 11:06 PM on August 9, 2009

BTW, I believe I may have been the first to mention Frjtz as a possible place for a meetup, way back in Nov 2007, for the great Mathowie meet. I believe it's worked out pretty well (though maybe it suffers from being too met-up in)
posted by jasper411 at 11:24 PM on August 9, 2009

Why don't we find a watering hole within walking distance of Red Vic? That way we don't have to rush out early.
posted by special-k at 4:07 PM on August 10, 2009

That's a great idea, special-k...I totally misunderstood the gameplan. It would be much wiser to pick a place close to Red Vic.
posted by iamkimiam at 7:33 PM on August 10, 2009

Club Deluxe is very close by and gyusan recommends it.

We could meet 5/530ish, grab some beer and pizza, then head over to see pxe2000's film and get back to more drinking if people feel like it. Sound like a plan?

deluxe is good. trax is good. zam zam is delightful, but kinda tiny (it was recently featured in bourdain's food visit to sf, if that interests you). all are in easy walking distance of the red vic. i've flaked on the last couple meetups but... if there's a movie involved, i'm liely to stop by.
