Jetblue + Cortex + NOLA = Awesome August 21, 2009 9:19 AM   Subscribe

Since other cities are already posting meetups, I figured I'd better jump on the bandwagon. Cortex-tastic New Orleans meetup in September!

It feels like our Columns extravaganza just happened, but I'm ready to do it again. On a *much* smaller scale of course. But I wouldn't be opposed to a Journey sing-along again.

I think we're looking at Wednesday, September 16th.

Who's in? And where should we go?

And how do we convince mathowie to join us?

What the hell, people? Is everyone still hung over from the last party?

I'm in. Oh, baby. I'm in.

I think I can make that.

Holy shit. Did no one just see that? Coldchef, Cortex, and Mathowie. Zoinks!

Coldchef, Cortex, and Mathowie. Zoinks!

"Little did cortex and Matt know, that during a summer rendezvous with Jessamyn, a plan was hatched over frosted glasses of Absinthe and steaming plates of beignets. A wicked coup that would wrest control of their beloved website from the boys' grubby hands forever. Yes, a plan both simple and elegant, and brutally evil. Their bodies were never recovered. And ever since that fateful fall, the gators out in Bayou St. John have developed a taste for pasty keyboard jockeys."

Hey! What about and radioamy! :)

Personally, I'm just happy to be seeing radioamy's boyfriend again. Wait. Did I say that out loud?
posted by ColdChef at 2:15 PM on August 21, 2009

I'd be up for it.

Just a poor boy from Mississippi, made good for himself and met all the metafilter admins. Mama would be so proud. Or confused. Probably confused.

Whoa, I really have to actually make it to this one. Can I bring a lurker along?
posted by mitzyjalapeno at 10:00 AM on August 23, 2009

Who is this lurker and why hasn't s/he coughed up $5?
posted by radioamy at 6:07 PM on August 23, 2009

I refuse to go to any meetup where there will be mefites with a lower user number than me! Just kidding. Barring any strange flight delays, I'll be back in town in time for the meetup.

Matt, if you're going to be around for most of Friday, would you feel like talking to some students about Jhai? If so, hit me up via MeMail.
posted by darainwa at 6:31 PM on August 23, 2009

Well darainwa I guess you are going to have to have a private date with mathowie :)
posted by radioamy at 12:58 PM on August 24, 2009

I feel quite guilty for missing the big 10, but we had some serious personal finance issues at the time.

Is there room for lurker+1 at this lovefest?

What of this?
posted by Night_owl at 9:01 AM on August 29, 2009

The lurker is my best friend, and I don't know why he hasn't given up his 5 dollar bill. I have reminded him that he can join and still lurk, but he seems hesitant. Anyway, can he come too, if it's still happening?
posted by mitzyjalapeno at 9:04 AM on September 2, 2009

Heck yeah, nothing wrong with lurking. More the merrier.
posted by cortex (staff) at 9:15 AM on September 2, 2009

I'll be there, but I won't be able to make it into town until around 9pm.

Metafilter: Nothing wrong with lurking.

Is the Columns a definite for the repeat or is there another suitable location? If we're throwing out crazy suggestions, I will put in my vote of Crown & Anchor Pub in beautiful Algiers Point.
posted by snapped at 6:44 PM on September 3, 2009

I'm personally open to any options...the only reason I would be hesitant to go to Algiers is that it's a little off the beaten path and hard to get to if you don't have a car.
posted by radioamy at 8:48 AM on September 4, 2009

I'm down with the Crown & Anchor. How late does the ferry run? We could drink a bit on the westbank and then the nightowls can ferry back over to the French Quarter.
posted by ColdChef at 11:21 AM on September 4, 2009

last ferry leaves algiers at midnight (according to this. and looky here: it seems like there are two crown & anchor pubs! one on the west bank and another in the marigny. 618 Frenchmen St, can't find a web address. so drinks can be had at the crown & anchor on both banks, all night long! disclsimer: i know nothing of either, so this is an observation, not an endorsement.

anyone up for dinner before the pounding o' the beers commences? maybe dooky chase? or mandina's?
posted by msconduct at 3:24 PM on September 6, 2009

Algiers Point?

That's like visiting Manhattan and meeting up in Hoboken.
posted by plexi at 2:06 PM on September 8, 2009

That's harsh.

I'm kinda excited about the Marigny-Algiers Point connection, but am willing to abandon my side of the river if it's an unpopular place.

I'm staying at Hotel Le Cirque because I stayed there ten years ago and it was nice and centrally located to all the uptown junk. I won't have a car, will the eventual places we decide on be somewhat near by? (I'm ok grabbing a cab to wherever)
posted by mathowie (staff) at 8:30 PM on September 11, 2009

le cirque isn't really conducive to the ferry, but it's RIGHT THERE for the circle bar which is a pretty slammin' neighborhood bar. it's either small or cozy, depending on your perspective, and to mother's which is one of the most talked-about restaurants in the city. i think cortex is here tuesday & wednesday; not sure when/how long matt will be here. so ... maybe dinner at mother's tuesday, followed by some beers at the circle, and crown & anchor on the west bank wednesday?
posted by msconduct at 5:04 AM on September 13, 2009

If ColdChef offers to take you to the French Quarter, go. Go. And take lots of dollar bills. You won't regret it.
posted by tizzie at 11:51 AM on September 13, 2009

Okay. Time to fish or cut bait. We need to decide a location for the meetup on Wednesday, September 16th.

I'm going to suggest that we meet up at the revolving carousel bar in the Hotel Monteleone in the French Quarter. The Carousel Bar is a slowly revolving bar that (according to this pdf): William Faulkner, Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote and Winston Grooms [sic] (Forrest Gump)are among the famous authors who have enjoyed drinks at the Carousel Bar. Today, the Carousel still attracts celebrities, including some recent sightings – Michael Jordan, Dennis Quaid, Greg Allman and Sally Struthers. Emphasis mine.

I'm not promising anyone that we'll actually SEE Sally Struthers, but on the mere chance, how can we not try?

As for a start time, I'm going to suggest 8, even though I probably won't be able to make it there until 9pm. Any objections? Alternatives? Please RSVP in this thread so we can have a head count.
posted by ColdChef at 2:15 PM on September 14, 2009

I'm all for the Monteleone. It has a nice atmosphere and the carousel bar is kinda cool.

Count me in.
posted by darainwa at 2:34 PM on September 14, 2009

The Carousel sounds good, and 8 works, so I'm in +1.

I'm all for the Monteleone too. Count me in. Probably not +1 - sorry coldchef.

I promise to have you home by a reasonable hour. Even if I have to have one of NOPD's finest take you home and tuck you into bed.

I will be at the Carousel for 8, or perhaps earlier. Mrs.Snapped has declined. Are there any special instructions (besides bringing dollar bills, and a change of socks)?

i'm about 80% sure i won't be able to make wednesday. you kids have fun, though.

We're in JFK, gettin' some airport sushi. We get in about 4:30.

If there are plans/logistics for doing something this evening (msconduct suggested dinner?), I think we're both down for that, I certainly am regardless. In any case, stoked to see y'all today or tomorrow.

i've got at least another hour of work to do tonight (i've been tagged with turning a sow's ear into a silk purse so i'm pretty effectively out for the count. i'd like to point out, though, that mother's appears to be open until 10, is pretty centrally located, and convenient to the quarter or to the circle bar for post-dinner drinks.

I have updated the meetup listing on the metatalk sidebar to (a) say today and (b) point to ColdChef's comment.

Currently sitting in a random taqueria on Magazine, sipping a margarita rocks and the biggest glass of ice water I have ever seen. Think I might wander over to the park in a few minutes, and then do who knows what from there.

You folks sure like your sunshine down here.
