September 29th - San Francisco welcomes cortex August 21, 2009 10:08 AM   Subscribe

Bay Area mefites - let's get the planning started for cortex's 9/29 visit!

I figured I'd start this off. Although we're pretending that this whole cortexian world tour thing ISN'T a competition among cities to prove who can throw the best meetups, we should still manage to show cortex some love. He's here Tuesday September 29th.

The weather should be good - what about starting at Zeitgeist? Outside, good beer, the tamale lady, etc. We could potentially adjourn to Pauline's or another nearby restaurant if some folks are less enthused about meeting in a bar. I imagine there might be some sort of wandering about the city earlier in the day for those of us with fewer work-type restrictions. Maybe the Academy of Sciences? Also bacon donuts.

I did try to convince cortex that he should be here for Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, to no avail. I even mentioned the banjos. Any other mefites interested in a subsequent HSB gathering?

Perhaps we should start off at the Fr... oh fuck it.
we'll just have to tell cortex about an important landmark in sfmefi history.

But Zeitgeist sounds great. I am also down for HSB. I've never missed one and definitely not going to change that this year.

Addresses and/or transit info would be very helpful. Consider me in for anything I can get to by BART or Muni, or failing that, I will try to bum a ride from another cortex groupie.

I am thinking about making a giant stuffed donut that we can all sign and present to His Cortical Modliness, and then watch him try to wrestle the dang thing into his carry-on luggage. Y'know, just as payback. *wanders off to check fabric stash*

Zeitgeist is only a four-block walk from the 16th Street BART station.

When would we get to the beach part? Also, the city's about the least interesting thing to look at around here. We should get him to Muir Woods (Pelican Inn, anyone?) or someplace else that's pretty.

WOOOOOOOOOO YEEAAAHHHHH
I should be able to make it.

It is actually a bowling pin, roll truck roll. Common misconception. What we do is we all go to a bowling alley after it closes and you sneak in and steal one and then we all cheese it because the cops show up.
posted by cortex (staff) at 1:58 PM on August 21, 2009 [1 favorite]

A good ideer, Muir Woods or something scenic. (I could fit four others in my car if we go there or somewhere not so doable by public transportation.)
posted by ambient2 at 2:10 PM on August 21, 2009

I can fit 3.

I went to the Pelican Inn recently for a different sort of meet up and it was set up nicely for groups- long tables, basic food, beer, easy walk to a nice beach, and just down the road from the woods (which cost $7 to get into, but hey- you're subsidizing the rest of the park system.) The Pelican Inn's menu isn't the cheapest but it's not the worst either. (~$12 for lunch, without drinks)

Earlier is better on the weekends- they both fill up if the weather's anything close to decent (and I use that term loosely).

In my opinion, both the Pelican Inn and Muir Woods are great in a heavy fog (or light drizzle), so bad weather shouldn't be a deterent. (The end of September is usually nice, though.)

Beer list.

Any objections to settling on a Zeitgeist gathering starting at, say, 5 pm?

Zeitgeist is a bar with a large beer garden full of rows of picnic tables. It shouldn't be too crowded on a Tuesday afternoon, and we can commandeer a corner. It's best on sunny afternoons. I can probably even convince my friend who lives upstairs to come down with her scrabble board and we can challenge cortex to a match. It's at the corner of Valencia and Duboce, so a short walk from either the Civic Center or 16th St BART stations, and 2 blocks off Market Street. Right off the freeway, and I don't think parking's too bad in the area. In addition to excellent beer, they make burgers (including veggie ones) there, and the tamale lady often comes through. It's a short walk to any number of restaurants, including Pauline's across the street.

I am one of the people with work-type restrictions, although I can probably slide out a little early, so I have no opinion on the day time activities.

I'm game, but Scrabble can be so hrm-y and think-y and not so talk-y. Something like Apples to Apples where we can make lots of ad hoc, specious arguments about why e.g. Milk is clearly more "Explosive" than Abraham Lincoln seems more mefi in character as far as that goes.

Hmmm. Weeknights are always rough for me what with getting the chirrun off to school at unsavory hours of the morning, and picking them up would also preclude hanging out in the day. But I will watch this space avidly, having come very close to naming my second child "Tamale Lady". I'd hate to miss a chance to eat righteous tamales and meet cortex. Plus I haven't seen the cityfolk in far too long.

Long story short, I will commit and recommit many times over, and even if I come, I will change my mind several times on the trip up. It's how I roll with meetups.

We are very likely to make it to HSB as a family, and would love to touch base with some of you guys if we do.

I just checked weather.com and it says that September 29th is likely to be a weekday.

I'll try and sneak away for Muir Woods or whatever, but I'll definitely be at Zeitgeist.

Anyone who hasn't been to Zeitgeist would be well advised to bring a sweater or something - basically all of the seating is outdoors, and evenings in San Francisco are chilly.

Maybe I'll try to pass myself off as digaman and slip acid into everyone's beer.

But now all those cheap nonstop flights departing at a decent hour that showed up yesterday seem to have evaporated from the internet, leaving only those with godawful layovers or arriving at 1 am. oh and I meant for Tuesday night. Not going to EC tonight.

Kim: There is a parking garage two blocks down from the castle. It's the closest one if you can't find street parking.
posted by special-k at 12:10 PM on September 28, 2009

Hi!

Your fear is pretty unfounded, at least at that hour of the night, and in that bit of the TL. You may be lucky enough to find parking right on Geary in front of the Castle, but if not, try O'Farrell (a block south, parallel, one-way going east) or Larkin or Polk (east and west, respectively, of the block the Castle is on; Larkin is one-way north, and Polk is two-way in that stretch). Van Ness might have parking, and is an easy and populated walk to the bar. Try to stay west of Larkin, and north of Ellis - not that a block farther out will put you in OMG NO! territory, but it's just less pleasant/less populated. If you've driven around for a few minutes and can't find somewhere you feel comfortable parking - or walking to the bar by yourself - text me or call me and I'll come out, hop in your car, go with you to park, and we'll walk back together.

Just to be clear for anyone else reading this: Tonight is the Castle meetup; tomorrow (Tuesday) is the Zeitgeist meetup.
posted by rtha at 12:16 PM on September 28, 2009

special-k makes a good point: the garage (if we're talking about the same one) is at the corner of O'Farrell and Polk - it's at the back of the building that's 1000 Van Ness, where the movie theatre is.

We'll miss you tonight, special-k!

Finally catching up on photos and such, my shots from both nights are up now. It was a huge pleasure meeting and hanging out with all y'all.

I think you are right! That collapses two problems rather neatly. Fixed, thanks!

So I told a friend "Hey, I finally went to Zeitgeist" and he was all "I hope you didn't bring any digital cameras!" and I went "Huh? There were loads of cameras." and he goes "DUDE! THAT IS THE RULE AT ZEITGEIST! NO DIGITAL CAMERAS AND NO PATCHOULI!" and I was all :confuse-a-cat:

It was super fun, and I'm sorry to the people who didn't get to meet me, because I am delightful.

Just digital cameras?

That's what he told me! He was weirdly specific. I guess Polaroids and daguerreotype photography is A-OK.

I'll be sure to get my camera obscura tracings posted ASAP.

I should have come earlier and with my Zeitgeist-approved Polaroid.

So who else is coming to Hardly Strictly?

We are!

I'm sorry we didn't think to get a photo with all the redheads. Otherwise it was an awesome meetup, and we now know how to attract the bouncer's attention--just sit on a table.

So is this going to be the Hadly Strictly planning thread too, or is someone going to start a new one? I still don't know which nights I'll be able to come up, but I'd like to see what you guys have in mind for hangings outs.

Sam: I'll be driving up on Sat morning around 1030ish. I'll be there all day. There's room in my car if you want to come along...

Photos are up, finally. Got a few more I'll probably add at some point.

We're also going to HSBG. We're definites on Saturday for the Old 97s, Dave Alvin, Nick Lowe, Gillian Welch. Sunday is a go as well, I imagine, what with Billy Bragg and Neko Case and all. Marianne Faithfull! I mean, damn!
