Meetup: Dallas and Chicago August 30, 2009 12:49 PM   Subscribe

Small-town Canadian girl heading to Dallas (Sept 30th - Oct 3) and Chicago (Oct 3-9). Anyone want to meet up in either of those cities?

I will have plans in Chicago with my wife and our friends, but I am left completely to my own devices in Dallas - so some ideas on where to go (and maybe someone to go somewhere with?) would be fantastic.

I'm gonna be in Chicago on Saturday Oct. 3rd too, actually; if it makes sense to do something that evening, I'd be totally down.

As far as things to do in Dallas: The State Fair of Texas will be in full swing.

Yeah, we're too stubborn to open a new thread for it, but I think we're planning on doing a night at the Billy Goat on the 3rd for cortex.

If that doesn't work, we also generally have a meetup at the Billy Goat on the first Wednesday of each month. which would be 10/7. (Whether or not we do this, given the likely cortex meetup four days earlier, remains to be seen.)

I think SpiffyRob speaks for TINCC. Since it's Saturday, we might consider meeting somewhere else, but I am always the least vocal advocate for change.

I like the idea of me speaking for an entity that exists to assure the non-existence of another entity. Makes my words feel important.

But yes: Regardless of where, we will almost certainly be doing some sort of thing on 10/3. One of us will get around to making a proper thread for it eventually.

Awesome. That will be my first night in town, and I don't know yet what my friends have planned, but I will try my hardest to be there.

No one in Dallas, though, hey? Too bad. I'll just have to go to the State Fair alone.

Don't count the Dallas contingent out yet. I don't know about the fair(it's great, but gets pricey pretty quickly), but if you want to meet up for dinner/conversation, I may be down. Where are you staying?

I'll be at the Hilton Anatole, my wife is going to a conference there. Dinner/whatever would be great.

Ok, let's get the ball rolling on 'TexCon '09. I'm thinking maybe we should expand our horizons beyond our usual venue, these being unusual times. Anything interesting happening that weekend?

adam: didn't you move up to my neck of the woods? I saw you waiting for a bus up here over the weekend. /stalking Anyhow, whether you're a north of Diversey resident or not, I'm going to push for a northside-ish meetup. That said, I have no venue preference. All I care is that there is a bourbon / whiskey option.

The Ghost Conference is that weekend but I'm not sure it's the sort of thing you're looking for.

I did move to Broadway and Belmont on Tuesday...though I don't remember being up there this weekend, nor waiting for a bus. When and where was it? Could have been one of my many body doubles out for a stroll.

what a coincidence! I am also at Broadway and Belmont; we are neighbors and TINCC. You may have just been leaning on the bus stop pole and not waiting for the bus at all. I waved, but as we were on the bus going the opposite direction, there was little chance you would have seen me. Now I wish I had taken a cell cam photo to ratchet the creepiness up that much more.

Nothing along that stretch of Broadway is great for a meet-up, although I am very partial to the Duke of Perth, and the beer garden is open.

Whatta ya know? My wife did some event photography at the Hilton Anatole recently. Are you interested in a Friday afternoon trip to the Dallas Museum of Art? It's not far from there.

owtytrof: Absolutely! That would be awesome.

Re: Dallas meetup, the Thurs evening works best for me, Friday evening I'll be at the conference banquet.

Ha, neighbors. That's awesome. Guess I know who to go to for a cup of sugar. We don't have to go to something in my (excuse me, our) neighborhood, I just figured we should do something different. Who knows what kind of turnout we'll have for the Mod Squad; the Goat might not handle it so well.

Oh, and I hope you can make it on the 3rd, arcticwoman. Two out of towners on the same day? Sweet. If not, I at least would be willing to meetup soon thereafter to accommodate. Love meeting new MeFites.

I'm down for an October 3rd meetup - especially one that's not all the way downtown. I have a show that night but I'll stop by afterwards.

If we're considering something other than the Goat for this, I think Edgewater Lounge has come up before, and that would seem to fit our specs well--good bar that's never very crowded, close to the CTA, great beer list (food too, though I can't vouch for it), plus accessible to a bunch of good possible post-drunkening activities (Neofuturarium for comedy or Cafe Bong or Carol's for karaoke). I'm up for whatever the TINCC decides, though.

Re: Chicago, Oct 3 - I really hope to make it. I don't know what my friends will have planned for my first night in town, but I'll try to make sure the MeFi meetup is part of it.

Fantastic. We'll iron out the details as the date approaches. I've got to get the day off, but that shouldn't be a problem. Also, RubyDoom's in.

The Edgewater Lounge looks good, and I'm all about Andersonville. I'd also toss in the Paramount Room which has great beers, great cocktails, great food, and if you must, PBR in a can. Also close to the CTA, but the Milwaukee Subway, not the North Main L. **

I like Hopleaf for the beer, but lord, so does everyone else.

** Oh, okay, the Blue line, not the Red Line. All these colors are so meh. We knew where the Ravenswood El went, dammit, and the Lake Street L was obvious. And what's with this "This is Chicago and Milwaukee" nonsense. The best part about that trip was the tourists wondering why they had be reassured that they were, in fact, in Chicago. Well, that, or pulling into the next station, whereupon L Guy would say "This is Grand!" when it was most certainly not grand at all. Wheeze, wave can, GET OFF MY LAWN!!!

eriko: you are my kinda man. i still call it the lake street L.

FYI, we're going to start a separate cortex-in-Chicago thread once cortex confirms his crash space arrangements. Most likely, we'll to a mini-meetup in Andersonville on Friday and a more proper walkabout on Saturday. Stay tuned.
