I haven't seen any double posts recently March 5, 2002 9:51 AM Subscribe
Curious, as this is the only one I I've actually run across. It seems that double-posts have been very rare recently. Or have they just been getting caught that quickly?
Even better than the catch and release time for double posts lately is the lack of snide comments (I know, I've made my share, but I think that's totally out of my system and has been for a while now) directed towards the poster. ColdChef handled the dp comment well:
This his been posted before. [link]Here ya go[link]. Good stuff, though.

Yep, ColdChef did a good job. I didn't end up feeling like a complete moron (even though I had done a search that came back with nada, I still felt like a bit of a goof for DP-ing), and the "Good stuff, though" at the end was size extra-nice.

Yeah, why does one feel stupid about double posting? I'd almost say that, given the quasi-infinity of links that would certainly be first-time posts, it's almost a sign of belonging to the MeFi spirit, to post something which a fellow member has posted before. Almost an honour - that is, if you first search properly and then read at least the descriptions of the last thirty days' posts.
FWIW, I'm becoming more and more of a MeFi-Google Search user as the MeFi search, although absolutely impeccable, now times out even at low-traffic periods; if you extend the search to at least a year. Which you should. Ideally: skim the last 30 day's front page posts; and search posts and comments, using the MeFi Search, for the same period.
Then use Google, with a versatile use of possible key words, to search since day one. By happy coincidence, Google now catches every post and comment that is more than a month old.
In any case, disregard URLs altogether. This strategy, apart from being fun and turning up otherwise undiscoverable pearls, is not as time-consuming as it seems(an hour or under)and works just fine.

Just thinking: perhaps the MeFi message that tells you the URL you've suggested wasn't found is way too reassuring and, given URLs' increasing volatility, actually misleading.
On the other hand, the New Niceness and its modern, slightly English and Un-American form - "Pardon me, old chap - that's a wonderful post you've made. Reminds me of another equally fascinating one, from a while ago, here, in case you're interested"* - will probably encourage posters to be lazier about searching first.
*Though the simple addition of a simple "...you fuckwit!" would render it entirely American again.

"Yeah, why does one feel stupid about double posting?"
Because it means Matt has to go and delete it, *and* because you spent time creating it. And it's probably at least somewhat a hangover from the recent days when double-posting was handled as though it was akin to clubbing seal pups.

Interesting. It'd just been a long time since I'd spotted one, and I check in pretty often. I scanned my version of the front page and only found one deleted post on the entire thing.

I wish people were still saying nice things about me in here. I keep checking back hoping to find another kind word about how polite I am.
I am such an attention whore.

personally, i think any reposts might have to do with some minor shortcomings in the search capabilities. the searchbox does not automatically default or append any wildcard parameters.
for example, yesterday i searched for 'consentcondom.com' 'consent' and 'condom' and did not find the link i planned to post, so i posted it. turns out a fully qualified URL 'http://www.consentcondom.com' query would have prevented it. but who searches google that way? also, if i had been to metafilter a few days earlier rather than stopping in 1-2 a week i might have seen the original.
