Hi Boston! I would like to party with you! June 18, 2010 11:09 PM   Subscribe

ISO Boston Mefites. Big thirst not necessary, but appreciated. [June 26]

Hello, Bostonians. I am coming to your fair city for a brief visit, and I would like to partake of victuals and imbibements with you.

The evening of June 26 would be ideal for me. I will be T-ing it up from a home base in the deep boonies of Chestnut Hills, near the Arboretum. In the past we have had some superlative meetups at Watch City in Waltham and a variety of locations in Cambridge, but if I can get there via your excellent transit system, I will make it happen. Thoughts? Time and place suggestions?

(Slight complicating factor in planning all this is that I'm about to go OFF-NET *gasp* until June 24, but I expect we can work things out. If y'all manage to come to some kind of consensus in my absence, someone should feel free to call it and sidebar it and stick a fork in that sucker. I'll show up.)

I will be technically in Boston on the 26th! But... by "in Boston," I mean "at the airport on my way home." Have an excellent time! :)

I have vague plans to be in Boston that weekend, and this certainly would add a weight on the the scales of decision.

Oh, one other thing. If there's a venue that serves alcohol but also permits wee babbies, that would be ideal. The excellent non-Mefites I'm staying with have a sweet year-old daughter. I don't know if they could make the meetup anyway, but if it was at a baby-friendly place they'd at least have the option. And then they could become ONE OF US.

I plan to be in Boston that weekend, so I'm down.

Chestnut Hlll and the Arboretum are not exactly the same local transit area; are you closer to the Orange or Green lines?
posted by nonane at 10:10 AM on June 19, 2010

Me and ignignokt are (tentatively) in! Cambridge is really easy for us to get to, but generally T-accessible is good. Bonus points if anyone knows a place that's not super loud.
posted by Metroid Baby at 11:18 AM on June 19, 2010

They're between Walnut Hill Cemetery and the Arnold Arboretum, if that helps. Closest T station is Forest Hills.

I am also pro not-too-loud.

And I will be more or less losing my Internet in 45 minutes.

I'd be up for going most anywhere, if I can overcome my ennui.

Parish Cafe on Boylston near the Commons (and its transit hub)

On preview I will be at a dear friend's bachelor party. My venue recommendation stands.
posted by KevCed at 1:38 PM on June 19, 2010

I should be able to make it, so long as it's somewhere T-accessible.
posted by serathen at 4:46 PM on June 19, 2010

I too want to come, but again, it needs to be near a T. What was that cute place with the English pub theme, right near Kenmore station?
posted by Countess Elena at 5:45 PM on June 19, 2010

I'm around. T-ish would be awesome.
posted by pxe2000 at 7:50 PM on June 19, 2010

My husband and I around that day. Also seconding someplace not too loud. We'd be coming in from Melrose on the Orange Line.
posted by sarcasticah at 7:51 PM on June 19, 2010

Because of the Orange/Red/#1bus needs, Back Bay sounds like a good location.

By Back Bay Station,
Brownstone,
Cleary's,
The Globe,
Parish, and
MJ O"Connor's

By Hynes Convention Center,
Pour House,
Bukowski's,
King's, and
Cactus Club

At dinner time, I've seen kids in the Pour House. But I'm not sure what time you're thinking.
posted by ifandonlyif at 8:11 PM on June 19, 2010

I might be able to do this but am also reliant on the T.

If you're going Back Bay, you guys should totally do Trident. Not that I'm like, in love with Trident or anything. Not that it's the only thing I miss about the entire city of Boston. ANYHOW. Trident. It's on Newbury St, right off the Hynes Convention Center stop on the Green Line. AND IT'S AWESOME.

Books AND pancakes! What more could you want?

McGreevey's is near Hynes (and owned by The Dropkick Murphys).

We've only been there once, and it was before they technically opened but they decided to open for one day for the Marathon.

The Publick House is down in Washington Square in Brookline, but it's not a bad trip on the 65 or 66 bus and is right at the the Washington Square T-stop on the C. It is a bit pricier, but it also has really good beer.

Don't know if we or one of us can make it as it depends on the time. If it's a time when Baby Zizzle will be awake and a relatively kid friendly venue, we'll probably come.

Countess Elena, are you thinking of Cornwall's?
posted by zizzle at 5:07 AM on June 20, 2010

Would the Savant Project be too far out of the way? We've been there before and it's nice; they have a small outdoor area that we might be able to reserve if we get critical mass.

Pool and bowling are good mixer activities for a meetup.

I like ifandonlyif's suggestion of King's: pool, snacks, drinks, and mingling.

Say, 8pm?

Perhaps a pre-meetup kid friendly dinner beforehand - 6:30 at the Summer Shack upstairs?
posted by enfa at 8:38 AM on June 21, 2010

We could try the Boston Beer Works again, too. That's pretty central to just about all the public transportation, and it should be pretty quiet now that nothing's going on at the Garden. Who called them about getting their private room last time?
posted by backseatpilot at 12:55 PM on June 21, 2010

There are two Boston Beer Works in Boston --- I take it you're referring to the one on Canal and not the one near Fenway on Brookline Ave (which is much closer to us and the one I think of by default)?

Yup, we went there for... was it the 10th anniversary meetup? There's a semi-private room upstairs with a bunch of pool tables that we were somehow able to Shanghai that worked well for the rather large group we had. Either way, the bar area upstairs is pretty large and would probably work well if we only had a dozen people.

This hasn't been called yet, and though I'm still not 100% on whether I can go, why don't I go ahead and call it for

Cornwalls
7 pm
Sat the 26th

Unless there are objections?

(Err....how does one get things sidebarred? Also, anyone who is 100% certain on going should feel free to override my calling.)

Oooo, count me as a very maybe. Never done one of these MeeTups, and I'll be downtown for a workshop anyway. What could be more fun than Mefites after a grand day of Measurement Techniques and Perspectives on Quality Improvement?
posted by teragram at 12:53 PM on June 23, 2010

Okay. I just called Cornwall's.

They have a pool room in the back where they like large groups to go, but they do not take reservations. The guy said to just show up and "kinda take the pool room over" and we shouldn't have any problems.

METAFILTER TAKE OVER!
posted by zizzle at 12:57 PM on June 23, 2010

Excellent, I don't think we were aware of that last time.

I'll bring a couple of games with me if anyone's interested - a friend just gave me his extra copy of Munchkin and I've never played it before, so I might try to chain a few people down to a table to play.
posted by backseatpilot at 1:06 PM on June 23, 2010

I'm a definite maybe. It depends on when I get back from visiting the folks.
posted by ifandonlyif at 6:21 PM on June 23, 2010

Excellent! I will see you all there and then! Woot woot!

Does anyone know if this is a place where they could bring the kid?
posted by athenasbanquet at 10:02 AM on June 24, 2010

Athenasbanquet, it should be fine for a kid at 7, though they may have music overhead and I don't recall seeing kids the less than a handful of times I've been there. I don't recall the music being exceptionally loud, and they may actually not play it if there's a Sox game or something else showing on the tv.

At least, I know I'd have no problems bringing Baby Zizzle there earlier in the day, if that helps at all, for late afternoon fries or something.

Hey, guys, so the server we had this time was the server for the last time we went to Cornwall's back in February. As I was settling up for everyone, he commented on how we were a great group of people and he remembered us from last time. He was also very happy and impressed with our ability to settle up, despite his being thoroughly confused. Just as he was last time. So, yeah, we're totally memorable!
posted by zizzle at 9:51 PM on June 26, 2010

Yeah, we had a great server. Cornwall's is working pretty hard to become a regular destination for us!

Eideteker, in particular he remembered you and Contadina (the couple on the bike).

I thought that was great.

Yes, HYPNOTOAD!!!! Must. Watch. Hypnotoad.

So, I was all excited about coming to this, and I got started doing chores in the afternoon, and then I went to watch the World Cup match, and before I knew it it was 9:00 and remembered the meetup. Sorry I missed it!

I have a similar excuse to backseatpilot, except replacing "watch the World Cup match" with "play video games." Oops. :-(
