Nerds in Chapel Hill, unit! July 21, 2010 6:12 AM   Subscribe

Metafilter's own asavage will be in Chapel Hill in September. Let's meet up and listen to him and Jamie talk about stuff!

On September 19 the University of North Carolina, as part of their first ever North Carolina Science Festival, is holding "An Afternoon with Adam and Jamie" at the Dean Smith Center. Tickets go on sale on the 26th of this month. Let's make a meet up out of it! Hell, if we catch asavage's attention, maybe he would come! (well, technically, he'll be there, but how cool if we could get him to come out for a beer with us afterwards!)

Aw. No love for the Hyneman? He'll be there, too, apparently.

It'd be worth the 4½ hour drive to Chapel Hill from DC for me. I'd even be willing to car pool and share the cost of gas if any DC yokels are interested.

Google Maps suggests it would be about a 13 hour drive for me. I'm... considering it, actually.

Does John Edwards live in Chapel Hill?

I live about an hour from Chapel Hill. I'm seriously considering this...

Yeah, sorry. I should have read more closely. Guess it's me who has no love for the Hyneman.

Crunchland, no worries!
Anniecat, John Edwards DOES live in CH, but I think that he and Elizabeth are trying to sell their eighty squillion dollar mansion right now.
You know, if enough mefi-ers were to come to the Triangle for this event, I might just have to talk my husband into putting some of you up at our house. He's well aware of my internet friends, and he even understood the significance of getting a picture of Cortex when he sat on my porch. Cortex! On my porch! I still shiver at the thought.

Don't worry, anniecat, it's actually pretty easy to avoid Mr. Edwards, even in Chapel Hill.

There's some kind of "science day" on 9/25 that includes "science-related musical acts".

McCorkle Place and other points across UNC's campus will be full of science activities, demonstrations, performances and more!

Demonstrations including catapults and trebuchets, virtual reality, wave simulation machine and advanced imaging...

Tours of University departments, including Marine Sciences, Physics and Astronomy, Mathematics, Archaeology and Anthropology, Biology...

I mean, if you're coming anyway... or live here...

The Science Festival sounds kind of interesting - "the first-ever statewide science festival in the United States". Huh.

msali: "Nerds in Chapel Hill, unit!"

Is this a typo, or a North Carolina joke I don't get?

No Plutor, it was a typo. My kingdom for a fifteen minute edit window!

i'd say this one is confirmed.

Whee! I'll make it to a meetup!

Promise me one of you will buy him some Eastern Carolina barbecue....and btw, those two crazy kids need to come to Fayetteville and do some Army mythbusters. It would be a great morale booster!

I will not do this, because I do not approve of Carolina "barbecue" in any direction.

jeoc, you are to be much pitied. Either that or someone gave you western nc barbecue and you didn't know any different.

I am from Texas - also known as that place where folks know how to cook meat properly so that it is palatable without an overabundance of vinegar.

I keed!

I love pulled pork, but I haven't found a passable BBQ place since I moved here, and in Houston there were decent BBQ places in virtually every strip mall.

Despite its vaunted status as a barbecue destination, North Carolina doesn't seem to have the same kind of everyday barbecue culture that Texas does. And for that, North Carolina is much to be pitied.

Although perhaps you can recommend to me a good barbecue place, and then you shall have to pity me no more.

I just know where I go in Fayetteville. Barbecue Hut. It's a little fast food hole in the wall but I like it. There are other good places but that's what I like, and what I missed and mourned during the years of my exile in Florida.

(or somebody needs to invite you to a pig picking. Oh, what a wonderful idea for a meetup....maybe one day....)

I'm very much up for this. Where do I need to camp out in order to buy tickets?

Evidently, tarheelblue.com will be carrying the ticket sales online, no need to camp out, Rock Steady.

I can't believe I'm missing this.

Tickets purchased! I'll be bringing my 9-year-old daughter along (she's a bigger Mythbusters fan that I am) so I may not be up for a hard-drinkin' post-show meetup, but we'd love to join y'all for some kind of eating situation, particularly if asavage can make it -- my daughter will be SO star-struck, if so!
posted by Rock Steady at 8:22 AM on July 26, 2010

I got my tickets too. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE it if asavage would meet up with us afterwards, but I suspect that the US$ 100 ticket-holders will be getting their pictures taken with him in the meet and greet after the event. He probably won't even be free to say hi to us :(
posted by msali at 11:40 AM on July 26, 2010

Have y'all posted this to IRL yet?

Has anyone gotten their tickets yet? I ordered mine pretty much the second they went on sale, and I haven't seen them show up in my mailbox yet.

Got my tickets in the mail today. Posted to IRL. Go check it out.
