If Pomplamoose can do Hyundai commercials, we can do this. MeFi Shop! November 30, 2010 9:40 AM   Subscribe

MeFi Shop is open for business. Or will be once we get your contributions. Thanksgiving was late this year so we're a bit behind on the MeFi Shop. Have something to sell? Let MeFites know about it.

Details:

- This is for MeFites only. If you want a friend or family member to be listed, get them an account.
- Please keep descriptions simple. Aim for 30 words or less. Long descriptions may be edited.
- No links to auctions or one-off For Sale items, this is for stuff you've created or worked on.

Send me an email to jessamyn at gmail [no MeMail please] with

- A link to your profile [not your username, a link to your profile please]
- If your info is the same or almost the same as last year, just let me know and I can just transfer it.
- A brief description of your shop & category (2009, 2008 shop pages for reference) with a link or two (please no 18-link descriptions)
- Let us know if there's a MeFi discount, we'll add some special icon or something.

Bonus for this year: we're going to have a little sidebar of photos on the shops page because I'm tired of looking at that little present. You can add a few photos [1-3 please] to this MeFi group on Flickr and we'll add a photo sidebar to the page as it fills out.

Ask here if you have other questions. Thank you!

Question: Anthologies. I'm in a few this year, but they're obviously not completely by me. Acceptable?

Small bug report:

I see no image.

You don't see the picture of gift boxes? It links to Saquan's Flickr.

I see no image.

You don't see the little present over on the right? Usually the caption is directly underneath it because the shop has stuff in it. We decided that instead of posting last year's shop we'd start from a blank page which means a few rough edges. And The Whelk I really don't know about anthologies. Are you still selling the cat-with-lute thing? Maybe a link to book, book, cat or something?

a list of MeFites who have stuff they make and sell online

That sounds like definitely not anthologies and possibly not even books, unless you are editing and binding them yourself and selling them through etsy. I mean otherwise, why wouldn't Microsoft Programmer #43902 not list Windows 7, or whatever they are up to now?
posted by DU at 10:07 AM on November 30, 2010

I was allowed to post books last year, DU. I asked special and everything.
posted by headspace at 10:12 AM on November 30, 2010

Yeah "I wrote this book" is definitely okay. "I am in a larger book" is a little more shruggo though erring on the side of inclusion is our general tack.

Just send you two emails. One with my "MeFi Shop" info, and the other with a link to my Etsy shop. Because it would have been too easy to put them both in the same message. Anybody selling replacement brains this year?

This would only be okay if it was your own personal Etsy that you'd coded by punching holes in wooden cards made from trees you'd genetically engineered yourself.

Seriously, though, the shop is such a great way to support the community and I like it a lot.

Jessamyn, do you have an idea of when the MeFi shop will go live? I'd like to submit my Etsy shop but there's a whole bunch of listings I've been meaning to add and I fully admit that I work better with deadlines. Thanks!
posted by alynnk at 12:34 PM on November 30, 2010

I plan to come home from computer drop-in time, have dinner with a friend and add all the submissions I've gotten [maybe 12?] in about five hours. We'll probably do some sort of sidebar announcement late tonight [my time] or tomorrow and add something to the title bar thing we do tomorrow. Hope that's helpful.

This could be good! I've been thinking about getting crafty again, and this might be just the impetus I need to actually start making stuff.

I don't have a shop online, but I have a punch of jams and jellies I'd like to get off my hands. (It is stuff I've created or worked on.) Do I have to get a shop first?

Do I have to get a shop first?

As far as I'm concerned you can link to a blog post with a list of what you have for sale that gets updated, but we are looking for

- stuff for sale that you made or otherwise put together
- priced
- that will or can be shipped to people
- updated somehow [even manually] so that you can tell what is for sale

If that makes sense. I'm getting to work updating it now.

Having a small problem with new listings, should be worked out soon. Folks who wanted "re-upped" listings are there, others should be up soon. Thanks for your patience.

I have added everyone whose details I had, pretty sure. If people can check their entries to make sure they look okay and poke other MeFites who might not be regular MeTa readers that would be great.

I got woodblock100's print in 2008 as a gift for someone else. It was really good, the recipient loved it and I regret not getting two.

This year I am getting one just for myself.
posted by Dr. Curare at 11:30 AM on December 1, 2010

I did that in 2008 also and it was a great idea. Woodblock100's mailing deadline is coming up for people ordering from outside of Japan so people mulling over that idea should probably move on it.

Sure, anyone whose stuff has been listed, please check to make sure your information is correct and links go where they are supposed to. If you have a nice photo of your things, add it to the Flickr group. The sidebar on the page will randomly put ten photos up the side. Thanks to folks for being creative, I'm just a cut and paster.

Oh, it's on the BLUE sidebar. I meant the MeTa sidebar, but maybe that ain't what this sidebar is for.
posted by Miko at 8:41 AM on December 5, 2010

We don't have a mod-customizeable MeTa sidebar. All the stuff there is either auto-populated or added by pb. We have it along the top of each page, maybe I'll add a note to the shop that says how people can add their shop.

What about those of us with brick-and-mortar shops that don't ship anything but would also appreciate the business of MeFites?

I think we had one MeFite who had a pet store who we accomodated. Do you have a web site? Could you write up/send me something short?
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 11:18 PM on December 5, 2010

(If I can slip this in before the thread closes off ...)

It's the evening of the 24th here in Tokyo, long past the 'shut off' date for shipping the little gift prints that I make (which were linked from the MefiShops page). My site logbooks show that 340 unique visitors have come through via the 'Shops' link in the three weeks that it has been active. Not all of these picked up a print of course, but a couple of dozen of them did (along with some repeaters from previous years ...).

So it's certainly time to say my whole-hearted Thank You! to MetaFilter for doing that page again this year, and to Jessamyn personally for doing the work to set it all up.

It has really added a nice little 'something extra' to the end of my year!
posted by woodblock100 at 1:55 AM on December 24, 2010 [2 favorites]

Hooray, you're welcome. We'll likely keep the shop up, though not linked in the header, through the year. Maybe I'll make a page on the wiki about it.
