MemoryFilter Quiz November 30, 2010 12:15 PM   Subscribe

MemoryFilter: without looking at the site, how many MetaFilter usernames can you recall from memory? Set the timer for 10 minutes.

Last night myself and a couple of mefites began wondering how much of our short term/long term memory was taken up with remembering the names or activity of people on this site. We decided to set a challenge to see how many usernames we could write down off the top of our heads.

How many mefites can you list in 10 minutes? Test your memory and post your score (the number, not the list) here.

Disabled accounts are okay. Misspellings are okay. Cheating is not okay!

Well that's active versus passive memory for you. If we each had a humongous word list containing every MeFite who has posted anything since we've been a member of the site plus an equal number of random usernames culled from other sites, I imagine most of us would be quite sensitive and specific at identifying the MeFites.

Actually that might make for a fun distraction.

I managed to get all of them, in order of user numbers. Missing out all the uncompleted signups was actually more difficult than saying whether an account was disabled. I also decided against cross-referencing sock-puppets, because that would've lead to some repetition and I wasn't sure how much time I'd have to spare at the end. Were I to do it again, I might be tempted to talk faster and do the cross-referencing.

Still, it was pretty tricky, but it gave me something to concentrate on for a bit. Thanks!

Ambrosia Voyeur, angrycat, anniecat, Artw, asavage, Astro Zombie, Astro Zombie 2 (heh), Baby_Balrog, box, Brandon Blatcher, clavdivs, ColdChef, cortex, Damn That Television, dhartung, davey_darling, delmoi, dg, dirtynumbangelboy, DU, empath, Faint of Butt, fake, faze, filthy light thief, flapjax at midnite, fred, grapefruitmoon, griphus, Ironmouth, jedicus, jessamyn, JHarris, Joe Beese, jonmc, Kattullus, konolia, languagehat, Marisa Stole the Precious Thing, mathowie, Meatbomb, Meta Filter, ND(cent), not_on_display, One Second Before Awakening, oneswellfoop, Optamystic, Optimus Chyme, orthogonality, Pater Alethias (sp?), pb, Pope Guilty, pot (and kettle), quonsar, Rhaomi (freebie!), Rhomboid, room, Rory Marinich, shmeggege, Sidhedevil, sixcolors, Slartybartfast, (something something) harry connick jr mints, (something something) Kabbadi champ '94, sonascope, St. Alia of the Bunnies, stevewoz, tehloki, The Devil Tesla, ThePinkSuperhero, uncleozzy, vacapinta, wendell

Sporcle can only handle 200 answers per quiz (and they have to be entered by hand). Still, couldn't the Infodump be used to make a game like that? Something like this (previously). It would be interesting to see what the most-guessed names are; that's part of what makes Sporcle so fascinating.

But yeah the first 200 quiz is pretty pointless. You've basically got mathowie, jessamyn, jonmc, and pb that are still around from then. And picking 200 users at random would be equally pointless since most of them would be near-lurkers (MetaFilter has kind of an 80/20 rule going on). Unfortunately I don't know enough Javascript to put together a Sporcle-style interface myself.

Oh, that makes me feel better. I got 18 before giving up around the 3 minute mark, despite the fact that I'm on there, too.

My problem when remembering the names was figuring out some kind of rubric for running through them, so I chose going through it alphabetically. As a result, I could only remember around one username per letter, so my count was in the very low 30s.

Miko (巫女) is a Japanese term that anciently meant a "female shaman, spirit medium".

Homunculus is a term used, generally, in various fields of study to refer to any representation of a human being.

Wikipedia does not have an article for Mr Crash Davis Mark II: Jazz Odyssey.

I love how we all get Wikipedia links.

To test this, I typed in my username in Wikipedia and discovered this uncannily accurate and kick-arse description...

Sparx is female, red-headed Lightning Knight who is introduced in the first season. Energetic and always eager for battle, but arrogant and headstrong at times, ... She fights with a double-bladed sword called the Sword of Jacob, which can fire pink-coloured electrical blasts. She flies on a hovercraft called the Lightning Flash, which can fly at supersonic speeds, and resembles a cross between a shark and a jetski.

that's a SHARK and a JETSKI, peeples. Now you'll never forget me.
