Some of you have new names now

I've installed a language learning extension in my browser called Toucan which changes an assortment of words on whatever page you're looking at into your target learning language -- in my case French -- with the idea that you will learn that vocabulary in the context of your primary language. But what's currently cracking me up is that when I open a page on Metafilter: communauté weblog, it often chooses to translate bits and pieces of peoples usernames. [more inside]

matcha with tears

Fizz and I often joke about how random or out-of-context phrases or clauses that we either say or overhear in conversation would "make a great Metafilter username." Since we almost never bother to write them down, we've forgotten many of our favorites. Now that we plan to start writing them down, we thought we'd have some fun and put the question out to the community: what random phrases or expressions have you said or overheard that you think would make a great Metafilter username? (Fun bonus question: what out-of-context Metafilter comment snippets do you think would make great Metafilter usernames?) [more inside]

If only I had a penguin...'s Post Your Animal month was the bee's knees! Let's continue with Post Your Name month, from now until November 7, or whenever we stop. Post Your Animal Month

So I had this wacky idea, and I'm doing it. Please join me. If you have an animal in your username, post (directly, tangentially, barely-relatedly) about your animal over the next month. Post your animal month goes from August 23 to September 23 or whenever people stop doing it. Whichever comes later. Tag #postyouranimal .

MeFites, how should we pronounce your username?

Following recent revelations that chris24's handle is pronounced chris-two-four aka christopher, we should probably all learn how everybody's usernames are pronounced, if it's not obvious (or maybe it is and we all collectively just don't see it). [more inside]

Go on, spill it.

Everyone is most likely familiar with the Profile page's "About" section explanatory text: "What's the deal with your nickname? How did you get it? If your nickname is self-explanatory, then tell everyone when you first started using the internet, and what was the first thing that made you say 'wow, this isn't just a place for freaks after all?' Was it a website? Was it an email from a long-lost friend? Go on, spill it.' I am curious if anybody's user name actually WAS inspired by an email from a long-lost friend. [more inside]

Pseudonyms for Mefites' family

I find the ways that Mefites adapt their usernames to refer to other people in their family (e.g. tel3path's tel3mum) really endearing. What are some variations you've seen and are fond of?

Rules for new accounts for existing users?

A few months ago I got into an regrettably poor discussion with another user in mefi mail. During the course of that discussion it became clear the user was an older user with a new account. I asked why they were using a new account and the answer was essentially: "because I want too". This seemed very different from the still current FAQ answer about new accounts which says that the only legitimate reason to change your username was a "Grave or life threatening reason". Usernames which match expertise

What are some MeFi usernames which match their users' expertise? For example, physicsmatt comes in to set things straight regarding physics posts. And backseatpilot can be relied upon to supply intelligent aviation-related info. Who else comments pretty much exclusively on topics represented by their username?

The Sword of Benny Andajetz

What's Your Metafilter moment?

For me, it was the dumb realization that after ten some years of seeing the name Benny Andajetz in posts/comments etc, that it was not just some weird assed Serbian name I would never really be called on to pronounce right out loud.

It was fuckin Benny and The Jets.

Christ what an asshole.

Ten fuckin years yo.

Hello! Any Mefites also Alpha.net members?

So, who is a Mefite and also a subscriber (or developer) over at App.net? I am here (as you can tell) and there, and go by Faintdreams at both locations. I was just wondering who else might also fit into the thin slice of technical Venn? A refactoring of the subscription system and the release of Netbot (an Alpha mobile client from the makers of Tapbot), has caused a mini surge in activity over at App.net. If you too are over there, feel free to find me and say 'ello'. ::waves::

What's a fun anagram of your username? Mine scrambles into Daily Nonstop and Dons Ponytail both of which seem apt. Who is Orienting Enfranchised Loners? Whose alter-ego is the Hit Run Shopkeeper? Who Yens Jams? There is no Ell Poop Cabal! Which one of you Gobbled Poison Rice? Was it the Glaze Raven?

The name is Foo. Mister Foo.

MeFi offers a lot of ways to format "the same" user name, thanks to the fact that spaces and caps are fair game. Mister Foo could also be misterfoo or MisterFoo or mister foo or MISTER FOO or.... So I'm wondering: has a namespace collision ever occurred? Have we ever had, say, a Mister Foo and a misterfoo active on the site at the same time?

It is occasionally referred to as a Bosie (or Bosey) after its inventor Bernard Bosanquet; in Australia it is commonly referred to as a wrong'un (and in India as the wrong one, which led to the naming of the doosra, meaning the other one, named by its inventor Saqlain Mushtaq

Could the mouseover text for the number of favorites show the usernames of the favoriters?

When you hover / mouse over the [+ 2 favorites] text, you see more text that says "2 users marked this as favorites" Would it be useful if the pop-up text actually showed the usernames of those who favorited it? Small pony i know, only saving a few mouse clicks, but i think it would be cool. Any thoughts?

Similar Usernames

Similar names. There are multiple active users with my name or a variation of my name. I'm SpecialK, there's Special-K, and SpecialK420. I've had people email me about askme questions and answers posted by both of these other users.

I obviously wouldn't ask anyone to give up their identity, but in the future can we get some sort of policy from admins? I mean, otherwise, I'm going to start snapping up names like Ouonsar and mattowie before they're all gone...

Usernames with @

@mathowie: Why are people starting to put commercial at signs before usernames when they are directly addressing other MeFites? Is this a convention from Digg or something? Am I the only one who finds this annoying, even more annoying than putting other usernames in boldface? Even more annoying than Todd Lokkenning? Can we make it stop?

Nitpicking: The text that says "You are logged in as: Username" uppercases your username, while everywhere else in the site it keeps it in the original case.

Outting Users

Hey, MeFite Detectives! A request: Please think before you "out" someone. In our personal lives, most of us have learned that just because we can do something, it doesn't necessarily mean we should, and the same is true here. If a user (or perhaps the subject of a post, etc.) has caught your attention for some reason, and they have revealed (or you have figured out) their real life identity, and you go poking around to see what you can find, please think twice before publishing your big scoop. IRL, do we introduce other MeFites as friends, acquaintances, or what?

I was out at Jillian's in Boston yesterday, and I saw another MeFite there who I recognized from a previous MeFi meetup. Thing is, I didn't remember her real name, and I'm not sure that she'd remember mine. Should I have said hi, and if so, what would be the rules on having friends of MeFites meet each other? Do we introduce other MeFites as friends, acquaintances, or what?

strange relationship between posts and the posters' usernames

We know that nofundy usually posts about "Fundies", hama7 has posted Hama-Net, and Vidiot's first post was about TV newscasts, but hasn't the relationship between posts and the posters' usernames gotten a little strange lately?

First, I saw Keyser Soze's AskMe about "my friend getting busted by the cops" and its MetaTalk follow-up. But then I noticed posts from PenDevil about rewriting the Chinese Constitution, Dome-O-Rama about an Act of Congress, psychotic venom about these depressing times, loquacious about Rumsfeld's words, ferociouskitty about howwasshe.com, and four panels about China's Building Blitz.

And AskMe has a problem with the French from staggernation and a mouse in a messy room from Slimemonster.

Am I just going overboard when I see the connections between a car insurance site and mr crash davis, Jay-Z and soundofsuburbia, or Sudden Oak Death and barkle (oops, that should be bargle) ? If so, just say "adjust your meds, Wendell", and we'll leave it at that. If not, I'll be back tonight with a post about Wendell Willkie.
