Three cheers for scody! April 23, 2011 3:40 PM Subscribe
Congrats to scody for finishing up her chemo!
She was diagnosed just over a year ago and has endured a few rounds of chemo. This sounded like the last one (right?) so big congrats for making it through all that stuff, scody, you're one tough bugger and here's to you being free and clear for a very long time.

Oh, scody. I like to grab a glass of Jameson and go bother her and Mr. Scody. About a week ago I was sitting in her living room, talking shit and drinking myself dumb.
And while we were talking I realized, man, it's been a whole fucking year since I met her. The week we met was, as I recall, the same week this hell began. And it dawned on me, slowly, that chemo should be over soon. A whole year of surgery, wretched bland food, and poison-eating, approaching completion. OMFG, scody.
Dear scody, best neighbor ever, the cobb salad is on me, whenever you're ready.

Aw, thanks, Matt (and everyone)! Yep, yesterday I took the last dose of the final chemo treatment, after a year of radiation, two surgeries, and six rounds of chemo. So now we start counting months (and then years!) of remission. I wasn't sure at first if I'd keep updating the blog once treatment was done, but I think I will, at least intermittently (and perhaps turn it into more of a general ramblings-of-scody thing).
I am not sure what this past year would have been like without Metafilter! Having the support of this community has really been amazing. The outpouring of kindness, generosity, and good cheer from so many folks here has been astonishing and humbling -- and very, very, very much appreciated. There were rough patches that were made entirely bearable and bad days that turned into good days simply by virtue of a kind message. I know the word awesome has recently come under fire in these parts for being annoying, but I honestly can think of no other way to describe the fact that such moments reminded me that I was never really alone through any of this.
I can't thank everyone by name (though I would very much like to!), but would at least like to call out a bunch of the L.A. crew for special thanks for all the visits, food delivery, errands, etc.: klangklangston & holyrood, space kitty & coyote crossing, asparagirl & doctor suarez, goalyeehah, dhammond, fake, The World Famous, apathygirl, and anyone else I am momentarily spacing out on naming (I blame the chemo!). NYC Mefite nickyskye also was incredibly helpful, especially in my first days following the diagnosis, in getting a lot of good information and research into my hands as I had to make some big decisions rather rapidly.
Okay, I'll stop there because if I start thanking everyone else I would literally lose count, and just say that I am, and will always remain, deeply grateful.

Wonderful, wonderful news, and I wish you all the very best and that your recovery from this round is lightning fast.
As a breast cancer survivor, I'd like to tell you that eventually you lose track of the dates. I don't mean chemo-brain. (During chemo-brain I couldn't remember if I was wearing underwear.) No, I mean that the cancer thing becomes almost irrelevant. For a while, the calendar will be full of reminders, but it passes, and faster than you might think. A couple of months ago I was trying to think if I was at my 10 year anniversary and had to do mental gymnastics to figure it out: "Lemmeesee, I'd been working at Acme Widget for a year; no, it was two years; no, it was one year, and we still had the old car...."
Congratulations and heaps of good wishes.

Scody, you are always, in my mind, the Honorary AskMe Ultra Mod, who swoops in like a badass to save the day.
You fly in with your Meta Woman cape, plant your feet firmly on the ground, and deflect snark with your golden bracelets of Common Sense while doling out your lasso of Truth.
Somehow, you manage to temper your swift justice with Empathy and Humor for the OP's dilemma, thus endearing yourself to the common man and giving us, for a little while, the illusion that you are just one of us. For a moment, we bask in the shared golden glow of your Wisdom.
Then, eschewing thanks, you throw in a pithy and relevant anecdote that encompasses, in a few words, the actual Awesomeness of your life experience, and, as we blink in the dazzling brilliance, soar away into the clouds, disappearing into the sunset.
Congratulations, Metafilter's Own Scody! Cancer didn't stand a chance.

The world needs you dear scody. It tickles me about my heart's deep root. I'm so glad you're alive and kicking.
This last chemo will likely be the hardest to endure, as the medication will have accumulated in your body to do the job it needs to do. Please do endure this round and know you are cheered on, that you are very loved and appreciated. Many hugs from your MeFite friend who admires you very much.

I remember when my mum went through chemo, I don't remember it too well 'cause you tend to push that stuff out of your head. I do remember that it was awful, for her and for everyone close to her. I'm so glad to hear that scody, who I only know as another member of this great community, has passed through it. Good health to you, hope you are as strong and fighty (or whatever your thing is) as my mum is now so many years later.

There wasn't a damn thing I could do or say
Right there to scody.
Scody.

I also just realized that all you need to do is add two Ss, and suddenly the Flying Burrito Brothers have a song about Scody:
(S)Cody (S)Cody I hear you say
I hear your voice calling me away
I'm not afraid to think of what I might find
I will be yours will you be mine
We've all been young we've all been old
We've all been sheltered from the cold
Come to my side and say what I think I already know
I'm going away don't you want to go
I remember the face that Harvey drew it was of a man
That my eyes saw thru
Come by my side before the evening is gone
And see where else this body's flown

I first noticed Scody because of her undying love for all things Paul Weller (me too!) and then she happened to know George Clooney, which he kindly acknowledged in a not so skeevy way, and then I realized she had favorited a couple of my comments, and then I realized, I like this Scody chick.
I think lots of us do.
And yeah, FUCK CANCER.
