mccarty.tim's latest project: Worst Post Ever is a "home version of the deleted post game." Bonus: See the red box of deletion in action! (Via Projects.)

How it works: The site shows a markoved post then deletes it, using a randomly-chosen reason already given by a mod for an actual deletion on MeFi. (The twist: they're all attributed to cortex.)

In an ideal-for-these-purposes world, we'd always capitalize the start of deletion reason and throw terminating punctuation on the end, but that's almost certainly not the case, which cuts you off from one of the easier ways to kluge starts and stops from just the caps/punct content of each token.

How I've dealt with the start/stop thing in the past is to create an array containing specifically those words that appear as the first or the last token of any given piece of input. So, for the deletion reasons, you'd have your markov table of deletion reason key-value pairs, and then you'd have either

1. special __START__ and __STOP__ tokens that could show up in pairs, so that e.g. the deletion reason "you are banned" would yield [__START__, you], [you, are], [are, banned], [banned, __STOP__] in the table, or

2. special START and STOP arrays in addition to the table that contain lists of respective starting and stopping tokens, so that you start generating a reason by picking a word at random from the START array and then go until either you hit a word from the STOP array or you hit your upper limit on generated words.

Both work, the former can make for a slightly more elegant set of markov processing functions because everything is in the table but is also maybe slightly touchier to make work on the short term.

Added comments. They take random usernames from the infodump, so don't think it's a personal dig if you see yourself.

Oh man, you have now gotten significantly close to building something I had kept meaning to build, and was starting to think about having a go at again inspired by seeing this last night—markov-generated whole threads, using keyword prompts from the thread text and from quotations from previous markov comments to simulate a straight-up discussion between robot users.

One of the ideas I have for that is to, rather than using actual usernames, do a order-1 or maybe order-2 markov process on a per-character basis to create new usernames from a markov table calculated from the existing username list. Get a bunch of fake names that have the feel of usernames (possibly checking a generated name against the actual list and retrying if you accidentally generated a real one) but get away from the I Never Said That! effect.

(A maybe simpler variation: grab two usernames, chop them both into a couple pieces, and then mash two of those pieces together.)

The quotation and keyword-based prompting is a big part of what would make it seem extra creepily pseudo-coherent, I think—for every new comment, there's some chance that it will be a response to some previous comment, in which case it'll process the keywords in that previous comment, pick out an "interesting" word (based on frequency count info, maybe), and use that as the first word to build a new comment from forwards and backwards. Then possibly prepend a quotation of some portion of the comment being replied to, formatted in one of a few ways folks do quotes around here.

And on and on down the thread, one fake comment after another in a rough simulation of a conversation.

Yeah, it appears I forgot a manditory linkback on a separate page. My wordpress blog had a tendancy eat the linkbacks, no matter what I did, thanks to the minifying even when I told it to exclude them. I'll probably just turn off minifying, but it's still a pain.

I might just switch to something like NearlyFreeSpeech. I went with a free host mainly because I was under the impression I'd be out at least $10 or so a month for even light websites, but now that I've done the research, I think I might just transition.

I might just switch to something like NearlyFreeSpeech.

Datapoint: i've got three domains, a mysql process and 2 email forwarders set up there, and so far, it's running my about $6.00 a month altogether, though my sites are really low traffic. It's just blank space and an ssh login, but their FAQ is comprehensive, and it just works. So long as you can keep $ in your acount, you'll never hit a bandwidth exceeded problem, since they just bill you for whatever you use, however much that is. Highly recommended.

Yep, I signed up. Unfortunately, I broke my dev version trying to optimize the markov a bit, but I think I can get it up and running again soon. Or, worst case, once an admin gets back online , I'll download stuff from the old host.

In the meanwhile, here's another markov toy I made to teach myself dead simple AJAX so I can hopefully learn useful ajax. Although it does eliminate refreshing, so I guess that is the heart of AJAX. WARNING: PONIES.

posted by Navelgazer at 4:01 PM on August 6, 2011

Nah, the first one went down because Wordpress ate a link that was manditory on every page with my free host. So since I was technically violating the TOS, poof.

This one is with a prepaid host, so I can't end up with a huge bill. If bandwidth gets insane, I may shut it down or add ads to subsidize the damage, but consider it a gift. Knock yourselves out. It's a text page with a small PNG, so I'd frankly be impressed.
