Ninja Editing / Deleting by Moderators - how's about we see a bit of smoke?

I understand that posts can be moderated. I understand that they can be deleted. What I do not
understand is that they can be vanished Guatemala Bay style, without a note on the offending post [e.g. "Text has been removed for X reason - signed mod] or a note to the account who made them [PM: Yeah, that wasn't cool, I had to remove it - signed Mod X].
So we're left looking at a void where there was a post, and wondering... did I imagine posting that, and am I taking acid that all these responses are to something that never existed?
Hints: A moderator
can edit a post - so why delete when you can prune?
Why the ninja magic?
I'd like a reason for the ghost like editing, I really would - especially when the post in question does not break any rules
