Cortex, your staff is broken. November 12, 2011 7:58 PM   Subscribe

In this old MetaTalk thread, cortex's staff icon isn't displaying for me.

The icons for the other mods are displaying. I browsed the thread on a Droid 2 using the Skyfire browser in both mobile and desktop mode, and then on a PC in Firefox 9.0, and I also checked while logged out.

If this matters, he was definitely a mod at that point, because it's that awesome Keystone Kops thread.

Other old MetaTalk threads are displaying his staff icon; thus far it's only happening in this one that I've seen.

yes sometimes i go through old threads for fun DON'T JUDGE ME

cortex wasn't an employee yet at that time so we don't show the staff icon there.

Confirmed on Opera 11.52, win7.

He wasn't? He has mod powers at that time. Ok then, my bad.

(until I checked the time stamp, I thought that Foci for Analysis was responding to pb. Baffling.)

Yeah, I think he had mod powers before he became an official employee. If I remember right he was helping out when jessamyn went on vacation one time.

When we set up the staff icons we asked each other, hey, when were we officially staff and we came up with some dates. We can adjust them if we need to.

Here's where Matt mentioned he gave cortex temporary admin powers in February 2007. I guess it stuck. I'm not sure when cortex came on as an official employee—probably later that year.

Sounds like it could be a staff infection. Be careful. Those can get pretty bad.

You know what would be fun? Little yellow icons saying "stuff" or "stiff" or "staph" or "Steph" or "smurf", not for staff members but random commenters in MeTa. There's next year's April Fools gag. Get on it.

Yeah, it was just before the end of February 2007 that I got keys to the car, but I wasn't actually a licensed driver until like May or June I don't think. Not sure what the best date to use for that would be, though I guess start of March would be the least ambiguous in a "started deleting shit" sense.

For whatever it's worth, if the purpose of the icons is to reduce confusion by indicating who's a mod and speaking for the site, it's a little weird to have someone without the icon talking about deleting stuff and being all modly. That's just me, though.

That makes sense, Errant. I think the chances that someone is reading a random thread from 2007 and also doesen't know cortex is a mod are pretty slim. I understand the confusion, though.

Despite the passage of time, I am still firmly in the camp of the actual little video mathowie who pops out of the bottom corner of your screen and delivers a speech, for the inherent absurd hilarity of it all.

I like this mod team precisely because they don't seem like the type of folks who would enjoy sewing all their banhammer favorites into amazing technicolor banhammer dreamcoats and lighting up their fancy mod Yahtzee parties or whatever they do. ...and they've been so nice about sending me such helpful notes re my Whitney fanfic.

Once you learn that the staff icon doesn't appear next to Cortex's name on that one thread in the database from 2007, nothing will ever be the same. It's worse than when I found out Don Drysdale was a woman.

Yeah we can think of maybe 5-6 times when we've banned someone from the community who really wanted to be here but just couldn't figure out how to participate in a way that wasn't constantly problematic from a community perspective and it always sort of bums us out when something like that happens. There's favorites-inflation for mod commentss generally and I think we're all sort of lucky [as a team and as a larger community] that the mods are all pretty favorites-ambivalent.

One of mathowie's comments linked to this on flickr which I'm guessing wasn't what was there originally. What the heck does "This member is no longer active on flickr" mean? I thought flickr uploads were forever.

In a case like that I do not think it is in any way "hooray for this comment" so much as a vote of community support for the decision.

I don't think it was dissing Allie Brosh so much as his first interactions here were to come into a depression thread and talk shit to people under the guise of performing like the internal voice of depression. His second interactions were to sneer at people for not understanding his incredible demonstration. So, yeah.

The other big thing was the incessant "hint: you are all very, very stupid, almost tragically so" phrasing in literally every single comment he/she made here. My blood pressure doubled every time I saw it - "hint:" somehow manages to be even more condescending than protip or FTFY (and I didn't think that was even possible).

Remember that scene in Dead Man, where the bounty hunters come upon the two dead lawmen, and one of the bounty hunters (the cannibal, who hardly ever speaks), looks down at one of the dead lawmen, with his head framed by some campfire sticks? And then he says to the other bounty hunter "looks like a goddamn religious icon", and then steps on the head, squishing it?

That's what I think of when I hear the word "icon".

And BTW, the entire film, in HD, is on YT here. Image quality is good.

So last week, when Steam's database got hacked and they announced that yes, they had my username, PW and credit card number, but they were salted and encrypted I found myself wandering around the house making little cooing noises, like sexual afterglow only without the sex.

Now this. This is a level of thinking through the ramifications of what your actually doing that I wasn't even sure was available on the internet! Kudos!
