Son of "a desk is a dangerous place, redux" January 26, 2012 9:51 PM   Subscribe

I know I asked this about 10 months ago, but I'm so excited about my new proper work desk! Our workplace was remodeled during the summer; my old desk was demolished and I was working from a large Rubbermaid cart until this beauty showed up. So please indulge me, and join me: "Show us your desks again, pretty please!" posted by Lynsey to MetaFilter-Related at 9:51 PM (111 comments total) 8 users marked this as a favorite

Heh. I just got to move to an actual office, with walls and a door and stuff. No desk pictures yet (I should take some, before I cover it in crap), but here is one wall, another wall, and I even have a whiteboard, for some reason.

No way. I just finished a project, that is I had finished until the changes started coming in. MY desk is here somewhere under a mass of printouts, but you can easily picture it by looking in any paper recycling bin.

I use the dining room table. The Santa hat is a cat bed, which I never got to where before one of the cats took it over. 99 cents, I guess it was worth it.

I have an actual desk upstairs but the room is unheated.

I have been doing HealthMonth with the MeFi team and learned that putting things out in the open is highly motivating when it comes to change. I loved looking at the desks and thought, "hey, mine isn't that bad after all." But then I turned and looked at my desk, not my workstation, and realized that this would be the moment I would put it out there, face the truth about my desk, and at the risk of the public humiliation for doing nothing I would spend the afternoon trying to clear off that desktop. There is only one annotation for the stuff on that desk -- "things that I have not looked at in over a year."

I cleaned my desk for the first time in months this morning and I shamefully confess - I considered pretending my desk is always like this.

But then I realised that lying is wrong, so here is the sordid truth, after I put some of the piles of Desk Stuff that were living temporarily on the couch back. For true reality, times it by about three and add some coffee rings.

But the best thing about my desk is this.
Combine it with an obliging partner and it's like being a wizard - some sonorous chanting plus the tolling of a bell and coffee magically appears beside me. Magic!
