Batman tickets in NYC July 8, 2012 7:44 AM   Subscribe

An odd giveaway. A New York Area MeFite writes to us "I have two tickets to see the AMC Batman triple feature on July 19 in New York City. Unfortunately, due to personal circumstances I can't go anymore, so I thought I'd give them to you guys if you want to give them away."

We figured we could handle this here and do the MeFite a favor but didn't feel up to having an impromptu Best Post Contents for NYers Only. Batman Begins at 6, the next one is at 9-ish, and then The Dark Knight Rises premieres at midnight after those movies. Anyone who could conceivably go to this, feel free to comment in this thread. After 24 hours we'll do a random selection of the users who have commented in the thread and send the tickets link to the winner.

Extra rules

- please do this if you want to go not if you want to give the tickets to someone else
- movies are at AMC Loews 34th Street 14
- sock puppets needn't apply, one entry per user (i.e. if you comment multiple times we'll still only put your name in the hat once)
- must have printer to print tickets
- in the event that the person selected can't go, we'll select another person and so on
- pb's random robot drawing decision is final

If this turns out to be a decent thing, we may try to broaden it with other non-geography restricted giveaways in the future. We know this is a little unorthodox but we're all crazy from the heat.

Take heart, old chum - there's no shortage of good people in Gotham.

Come on, I want you to do it, I want you to do it. Come on, hit me. *Hit me!*

(I can and would take a bus from Boston to NYC for this!)

Well, poop, my girlfriend is working that night and I promised her I'd see DKR with her. Good luck to the winning MeFite!
posted by griphus at 8:01 AM on July 8, 2012

Wait, uh, I misread. Can my comment be deleted? I don't want to accidentally win these.
posted by griphus at 8:03 AM on July 8, 2012

It's fine we'll just remove your name from the final list.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 8:05 AM on July 8, 2012

Don't worry, we'll ignore obviously not-attending comments. But that's a good point. If you're just commenting to comment and not to nominate yourself for the drawing, please go ahead and try to make that clear somehow since we don't know where everyone lives or whether or not they're going to be near NYC that night, etc.

I do not wish to be entered in the drawing, but I think this is a nice idea! Thank you, anonymous Mefite!

[not attending] a MetaFilter giveaway or free cycle would be ace.

Well, poop, my girlfriend is working . . .

I do not wish to enter, but I do wish to point out this hilarious pseudo appositive. I don't think I'm mature enough for an R rated movie.

Oh man, if this was at the Lincoln Square IMAX I would be ALL UP ON THAT. But the 34th street theatre is kind of icky. :/

[not attending] I wish I'd thought of this idea before. I've had tickets to plays in London I couldn't give away or get refunded. In one case, we just had to leave the seats empty.
posted by vacapinta at 8:56 AM on July 8, 2012

What a great idea! We should have a sub site for stuff like this. (Don't enter me).

[not attending]If you're not familiar with the movie Dark Knight Rises, here's a trailer.

*grovelly voice*

I'm not just stoked for the film - I think this setup should be expanded into a pony, like Secret Quonsar.

Not attending, but think this is an awesome idea.

I'm not interested in going, but are the tickets free?
posted by dfriedman at 9:17 AM on July 8, 2012

They are free to the winner, yes.
posted by cortex (staff) at 9:27 AM on July 8, 2012

[not attending]There's been a couple of times I've wished I could find someone in the MetaFilter community to take tickets or something that I wasn't going to use. I think there's a great idea happening here, if it can be implemented without too many headaches.

They are free to the winner, yes.

However, each comment in this thread will cost $5.
posted by hippybear at 9:28 AM on July 8, 2012

Also, it would be pretty awesome to have a section of the site (MeTa seems like the not-right place to do it regularly) where we can do craigslisty stuff like "I am moving and want to give away my $_ITEM to someone who will come and get it" but don't want to expose their homes and lives to grotendous craigslist creepers.

To briefly address the brainstorming stuff in here:

- doing a drawing/giveaway thing again in the future might be a fun thing to do, and could conceivably be a regular thing as a sort of fun low-stakes thing, but for now this is just a one-off experiment because it seemed like a fun way to help a mefite out;

- creating an actual dedicated channel for this sort of thing is not something we have seriously discussed and may be more problematic in some ways so it'd need some talking about;

- creating something more robustly sort of craigslisty or classified-ads in nature would be a bigger and more complicated deal still and is probably safely in "not gonna happen" territory because boy what a lot of trouble that could be for any number of reasons.

Maybe a separate Metatalk thread in a couple days would be a good venue for discussing the notion of this as any sort of recurring event; for now let's mostly keep this thread workable as a participating-in-this-specific-thing venue.

I've mulled over a listserv or spin-off board for NYC mefites for a while

Yeah, I mean, if I am going to let internets weirdos into my house for stuff it might as well be weirdos I know embarrassing personal things about.

And I don't mean a separate dedicated channel for it, just some sort of modly decision if it would be ok in IRL, for example. Although that seems like a bad idea too. Hm.

New decision: no one can have my stuff.
posted by elizardbits at 10:11 AM on July 8, 2012

Don't want tickets, but do want unload-my-stuff-on-fellow-MeFites pony. Better the weirdos you know, etc.

[not attending] I think this is a wonderful idea! My spouse and I once had tickets to a sold-out concert in a fabulous venue, and then we both got the flu and couldn't go. I tried Twitter and Facebook, with no love. If a Mefite could have taken them, I would have been thrilled!

whoops. you can delete my comments, Cortex.

I could see this on that night, please count me in.
posted by whir at 12:03 PM on July 8, 2012

Also maybe it would be a good idea to make a post to the IRL section or some such, so that mefites who are interested in events and are in the NYC area would get a chance to see it?

Sweet! According to my calculations, I have about a 1 in 20 or so chance of winning! Thanks again to the mysterious donor, and to the mods for setting it up!

[not attending] Nthing hippybear's and elizardbits' sentiments; I've long wished for a Metafilter craigslist/freecycle setup of some variety.

Oh, hey, does anyone need a practically new washer? I need to clean out my grandmother's apartment and no one I know wants it.
posted by griphus at 9:02 AM on July 9, 2012

I feel like an IRL ish sort of setup (maybe without the notifications to memail) is the best sort of local give-away factor on metafilter proper. Alternatively, local site specific offshoot contacts (listserv, localcabal twitter accounts) may work more immediately and without hassling the metafilter mods.

Alright! So we need to figure out who to give tickets to.

Hmm.

I was going to draw a name out of a hat, but my hat is in the shop. So that's out. This is a pickle.

Oh! I have just the thing for this. Let me check the bookshelf, one second, it's, no, behind the Twilight Omnibus, no, that's not—man, why did I stack all these My Little Ponies here, it's—

A ha! I knew this was seventy bucks well spent. Let's crack this sucker open:

Okay! We're in business. Where's my dice?

Ah, there we go. And I'll need a lucky rolling surface. This'll do—man, good thing they didn't let this guy direct, I love the book and all but that'd have been a real clusterf—

Oh right, hi, sorry.

I'm thinking Batnolan. Anything else would probably be sort of a weird fit for this campaign.

Let's warm up the old batcosohedron and pick out a character name!

Eleven! So that's...

qnarf! The role of going to see Batman will be played by qnarf.

Conbatulations!

Go ahead and contact jessamyn by mefimail to let her know what email address you want to receive the ticketing information at.

Thanks for playing, everybody.

Now, remember, this means you have to sit through the entire triple feature. No getting up to stretch, no using the bathroom, nothing. And if you don't make it all the way all the way through, well...

Let's just say you want to make it all the way through.
posted by griphus at 9:40 AM on July 9, 2012 [2 favorites]

Congrats qnarf!
posted by Grither at 9:58 AM on July 9, 2012 [1 favorite]

Now qnarf should hold a drawing for the second ticket! To draw out the suspense! (And also because I really want to see Batman. Damn. I guess I'll have to pay for my ticket just like all the other suckers.)

Anyone want to go see Batman next weekend?

Looks like it's back to Plan A, my own triple feature. On the plus side, I won't need a Camelbak to bring beer to my living room.

Congrats qnarf. Enjoy the show.

Oh, gosh, I've been away from computers all day, just got back to see this!
I'm so totally geeked out for this, you guys don't even know! Thanks so much for putting this together, to everyone who was involved. I was having a pretty crappy start to my week, and this just turned it right the hell around.
I love this place. I don't post much because I'm a little afraid I might break something that's so great, but I really, really love mefi, and this is just one of the neatest things ever.
Thanks again!
