Netscape 6.1 bug May 21, 2002 8:27 AM Subscribe
Netscape 6.1 bug: using the browser's back button from inside a thread gives you a popup window asking if you want to download a file of type called "text/html, text/html from http://www.metafilter.com". You have to use the "home" button to get back to the front page, and then scroll down to get back to where you were.
Various versions of 6.2 (on Win PC) do not have this problem, and I don't remember seeing it on 6.1 either. What OS?

mikhail: Win2K. This bug only showed up after the outage before the last one (I think...it was the one where other people got the same download message as I'm getting now anyway, I remember seeing the message mentioned here), prior to that it worked just fine on 6.1.
moz & quonsar: thanks, but I can't change my browser or version thereof, I need 6.1 for work reasons right now. It's no big deal, I just thought I'd point it out.

Wait for Netscape 7.0. Coming in about a month or so, it's gonna rawk as it's based on Moz 1.0. Or just wait for Moz 1.0 and get that :)

biscotti, just to be clear, are you having the problem today and you can reproduce it consistently? Or did you have the problem a couple weeks ago and now it is gone?

I had the same problem at work all last week, where I run N6.1 on a W2K machine. I didn't use the home button tho, I just kept going back to my bookmark. This week, who knows? Someone cut our T-1 line early yesterday morning, so we've been offline all yesterday and today. Sigh.

i get this problem consistently on netscape 6.1 on linux too. it seems to be that metafilter is sending "text/html, text/html" as the mime type of the pages rather than just "text/html" once. it doesn't cause problems when loading a page, just when you try to go back to it and the browser is using the cached page. it's been happening for approx 2 weeks now and was fine before.

Matt: I get the problem every time I use the browser's back button from inside a thread (which should take me back to the front page and jump to the thread I was just in). It doesn't happen with archived threads, just with those on the front page. I've been having it consistently since the outage before last (I seem to remember people commenting in MetaTalk on getting this error after that outage, but it seems to be fixed for browsers other than Netscape 6.1). It only seems to happen when the front page tries to load from the cache, since I just tried clearing my cache while inside a thread and it didn't happen when I clicked the back button (but it does happen if I don't clear my cache while inside a thread).

Okay, we're back online at work. And I'm still getting the same result as biscotti. Is it MeFi or is it N6.1?
