Minimallist MeFi Chat October 5, 2013 9:41 AM   Subscribe

Just in case any other MeFi chatters want to use it, I've made a modified version of the userstyle that pb offered in the recent Chat Update MeTa. It turns off the sidebar in the MeFi chat web client.

pb kindly provided the basis of this script in response to my request for an adjustable sidebar in the MeFi Chat web client. That was apparently not a feasible request for both technical and social reasons, but this script is a nice compromise for anyone who prefers the web client but finds the sidebar (the area with the tool icons and user list) more trouble than it's worth.

I personally like it because I often run the chat web client in a tall, skinny window where the main chatting area can become uncomfortably cramped, and I don't get a lot of value out of the sidebar area anyway. If you're like me, perhaps you will find this script useful. If one needs the sidebar to come back, either temporarily or permanently, one can simply disable the script from within Stylish. (Stylish for Firefox, Stylish for Chrome.)

As in the link in the above-the-fold test, you can find the userstyle on userstyles.org, here. I have also updated the relevant page of the MeFi Wiki to include the new script.

Obviously if you are already running a dedicated chat client then this script will be of no use to you. However, if you like the web client but wish that it was even more minimalist than it already is, then this might be something you'd like.

That's really cool, and I will probably use that.

Excellent -- this is very helpful for making things look more professional-white-background. Thanks, Scientist!
