A pet peeve, to me, is something intensely subjective and harmlessly annoying that it's unreasonable to attack and stupid to waste time decrying. And yet...and yet we all have them and it's fun to list them. Mine(sorry SpecialK for singling you out)are:

Another one of mine is the use of the phrase, "yawn".

Some people consider boredom to be the acme of cool. I, for one, think that's a crock of shit. And even if something does bore you, why bother commenting? Just move on to something that gets your blood pumping.

spaced really weird, like it was written in notepad and the line

Continued by a very long blockquote that is a big yellow link to an article that is only three paragraphs long. Or, better yet, a quote taken completely out of context that happens to support...

sidenote: really, the troll dolls, so twelve years ago...I've never read Harry Potter but I assume there are trolls in his stories. Use those trolls, at least be fashionable with your use of images.

- Sentimental pleas such as "Be gentle; my first post" as well as pre-emptive apologies: "I hope this hasn't been posted before";

- Excuses about lazy searching, involving URLs: "I searched and the URL had never been linked", meaning user didn't search at all;

- "As I've said before" links to a previous comment by the self-same poster;

- Spelled-out URLs in the middle of comments, i.e. http://metatalk.metafilter.com/mefi/2337#40603;

a pet peeve of mine is when people chime into a thread with comments on the (poor) quality of the conversation rather than taking it upon themselves to improve the quality. it's usually mean and all hurtful-like.

ok why if I previewed, then posted, I have two posts, no excuse I did read the above. And if I posted then why was text left in my "comment box". Unless if you hit preview with post at the same time, as they are next to one another maybe? and get both results? The system also seems to be running in real time.

Jeez, you people are cranky. I guess I'd have to say that I find real-world behaviors a whole lot more irritating and horrifying than any stylistic breach of MeFi etiquette. But then I live in the asshole capital of America.

Here are some things I like: news stories for the front page not from CNN or Yahoo, members' "specially different" relations to the English language (the ordinary becomes so tiresome), and all the different ways -- from ascii rabbit to emoticon to small type to Simpson's quote to straightforward disclaimer -- people have tried expressing "I'm saying this in a funny tone of voice" to let other members know they're not being cruel or mean; even when those modes of expression may be silly or annoying, I appreciate the intention.

Of course, my real pet peeve is shoddily-constructed paragraph-long sentences.

Dislikes: Posts on Isreal/Palestine which offer no new insight or development. Posts which claim--either as a main point or as an aside--that Bush stole the election and is not a legitimate President. Posts which claim all members of one or the other political party are insane or retarded or both and have nothing valuable to say. Posts involving economics. Posts involving politics. Posts about articles about other articles about blogs. Posts linking to the same topic as another post had only hours earlier. Posts involving failing/succeeding web companies. Posts which verge on the incomprehensible.

Likes: Posts on cool photography or art. Posts on flash games. Posts on pancakes and/or haiku. Posts on good web design. Posts on Supreme Court decisions. Posts with lots and lots and lots of links I haven't seen before--memepool style. Posts which don't have an agenda to advance--in other words, posts that say "gee whiz, look what I found!"

It kind of annoys me when people feel they have to use someone's entire screen name to respond to them.

My pet peeve: making a spelling mistake in a comment and following it up with another comment correcting your mistake, although it's pretty obvious that you meant "believe" and not "beleive" or whatever.

Bonus points: doing it in a really geeky way, like "s/beleive/believe"!

People who write a rant and then decide to delete most of it without deleting the space below. No forget that, I mean people that pull you up for it, after all we are all human. No, OK it is annoying, careless, and disrespectful to the community, so yeah it's OK to pull people up for it. But then again they probably feel stupid anyway so is it really necessary, and they meant no harm? Is it really that clever to point small mistakes out? Does it add anything to the community? Then again there are people that/who/ just discuss thing with themselves without coming to a conclusion. Now they really piss me off.

My biggest pet peeve is "your" vs "you're". Also, I will occasionally run across "should of" used when "should've" was what they were trying to say. "But the spell check said it was okay..." So what? Any random collection of properly spelled words will be spelled correctly.

Yes, I'm a bit of a freak about spelling and grammar. It really fucks up dyslexics. I don't mind it that much on the web, but I have started to use a red pen to correct spelling and grammar on resumés. While I'm conducting the interview.

My other pet peeve is the Clavinists. No, not Calvinists. Clavin, as in Cliff Clavin from the TV show Cheers. We all know people like this. They pull random information out of their asses and then pass it off as facts. For example, in one of the discussion threads on EN World, some fuckwit posted that Ted Turner had spray painted swastikas on the dorm rooms of Jewish college students. When asked for a link, he said he found it on the web. How about a URL next time? Nobody I've spoken with can find any information to back this up.

Mentioning Godwin's Law before anyone has the pleasure of using the N-word

- Feeling preemptively peer-pressured into mentioning Godwin's Law before anyone has the pleasure of using the N-word because you wanted to use the N-word in a perfectly legitimate non-facile-comparison-of-random-person-to-Ns way but knew that as soon as you did someone would call Godwin on you, and then feeling damned if you do, damned if you don't for having self-Godwinned and wishing you'd just mentioned the bloody Nazis in the first place, seeing you were actually talking about extreme examples of cultures of violence, and not mentioning them in such a context is like the old joke about trying not to think about elephants.

Bad spelling and grammar, although the standard on Mefi is far better than on any other forum/blog/chat site I've been to. At least people here write in sentences.

People who take the effort to research their topic then undermine it all with an aggressive personal attack.

That's number one.

- Posts which deny--either as a main point or as an aside--that Bush stole the election and is not a legitimate President.

- Pancake references

- The idea that no rules apply on Fridays and that we are all suddenly overcome one day a week by the urge to wade in stupid crap (I'd rather see it spread evenly)

- "I of to disagree"(I might of made this last one up).

ROTFL

- Ignorance, intolerance, and those who are proud of displaying one or both.

- People who admit that they delight in "pissing in the Metafilter pool" just for the hell of it who don't get banned

- Short-term thinking about long-range problems

- Simplistic conceptualizations of complex issues

- People who derive their identities and feelings of self worth from labels (Republican, Christian, American, stockbroker) and defend them accordingly

- Pointless unkindness toward and "pointscoring" on fellow users. Also, bitterness, selfishness, cruelty, verbal abuse, and threats of physical violence

- Lurkers

- People unwilling to step up and defend the values of the site when they are abused

- The existence of the Spell Check button

- The fact that the "new comments" tag rarely works

- The fact that I cannot more easily track activity in older threads

- The fact that threads effectively die after 3 days, making cries to put new-but-related links in the original thread preposterous

- The dilution of the site by Sportsfilter and Blogwhatchacallit

- When new signups are turned off

- Doubleposts (by multiple people or by the same person)

- Users who email me irrational rants out of the blue to call me every name in the book with little explanation of what provoked them so

- People who think they have all the answers and come here only to proselytize

- People who come across as one-dimensional and only ever post in threads on a single topic
