The link-tracking process this time was a little more duct-tape-and-string than usual so it's far from impossible that I missed one or two of the things we talked about. Apologies in advance!

Please keep us to our idea of having a call in with one of the list generating AskMe questions for next month!

I missed a lot of these links because of the general awfulness of the news especially in recent weeks, so thanks again for the round-up and the enjoyable conversation! (And of course thanks to the mods for the continuing moderation work in the tough threads.)

While I haven't been on a road trip in a while, I fondly remember the ones from when I was younger. I also (not so fondly) recall getting one of my fingers getting slammed accidentally in the edge of the door of the family van when I was a kid. Can't remember where, but it was in the parking lot of a roadside shop geared towards tourists. Hurt a lot at the time, but luckily it turned out to be okay.

Hope you all enjoy your holidays; wishing you a fun and safe trip, jessamyn! I also would love to hear your song setting of "The Gift of the Magi" on ukulele, so I hope you get a chance to work on it and post it to MeFi Music sometime. :)

I'm only here for the mentions.

I should mention that an Etrigan comment was also the long-lost comment in my "what's the word?" post.

I'll take two FPP mentions, even if they were grudging!

Regarding the jury-rigged comms: the audio was way better than usual; jessamyn's voice in particular was much more natural sounding, but I suppose a headset make for easier typing.

This was me using my phone for audio (with the earbuds and earbud mic) and then typing on my computer so I heard less typing too which I thought was useful. I felt it was better soundwise too.

There's Cambridge trivia again tonight, in case any of you were inspired by jessamyn's story of driving in Boston. There will probably not be as much weird candy this week though.

I missed the original bees post, so I just went and commented on it like a million years after the fact, where nobody will read it... and I've decided I'm not about to deprive you of this gem:

I think we've finally discovered what the Beyond in "Bed Bath & Beyond" refers to.

Pronoiac, my favorite part of transcribing the podcast is when jessamyn or cortex make weird little vowelly interjections and I have to come up with some way to convey their essence on the page.

I think Jessamyn's road trip just ended, so I wish I'd thought of this earlier, but a road trip podcast could be great! Like an hour per day recorded while you're on some stretch of empty highway. I bet listeners would pick up overall vibe changes from episode to episode.
posted by ignignokt at 7:03 PM on July 15, 2016

I love that idea! That said, I was in a car with bandit and not_on_display and a lot of our talking was discussed in this tweet. I think cortex and I need to go on a mini road trip, tbh.

Alternatively, instead of doing a road trip podcast, you could do live commentary while playing Desert Bus.

Wow, the "Is cooking meals a good use of time?" thread is a perfect distillate of everything petty, annoying, and ugly about askmefi. To be fair, there are generally far more good things than bad things here. I love askmefi. But, that thread makes it hard to remember why.

I'm going to go read some "identify these strange old-timey kitchen implements" threads and try to forget how obnoxious and inward-looking our community can be when asked for an opinion. Yikes.
