Possibility of occasionally doing two FPPs in a day? February 26, 2018 11:10 AM   Subscribe

This has happened several times, but today's example is a bit frustrating. I did a post about Norway and the Winter Olympics, which went live at 12:02. At 12:14, I spotted the perfect fodder for another (even better) FPP, namely the spectacular hair of MulletFest. But couldn't do a post (or even start to edit one) as over 23 hours still had to elapse (and I'm away tomorrow judging a baking competition somewhere hopefully warm and, ironically, getting a haircut, so I can't post then anyway). As this afternoon has gone on, more linkworthy content has appeared [1][2][3], making it more frustrating that I can't do an FPP. Could there be exceptions, or a place on MetaFilter where people can drop a "I can't post about X, but it's there if someone else wants to"? Otherwise most MeFites remain unaware of e.g. the latest hair fashions. Thank you.

Nah, this is one of those cases where I think "toss it in a text document and wait till tomorrow" is a better solution than carving out exception cases for the pretty tried-and-true once-a-day expectation. Anything that is actually legitimately pressing time-wise is going to be so because it is of significant geopolitical scope and someone else will definitely get to it if so; everything else will keep for a day.

I feel you on the itchin'-to-post thing but it's just an itch. If good material on a post keeps cropping up in the 24 hours before you can make it, you'll just have a better post once you can.

Oh man, I would be happy to post about mullets, but I suck at making posts that aren't just "here is a link, enjoy!"

Any mullet post needs to be really brief and serious above the jump, and then really be wild and rambling in the extended description.

If the hair at Mulletfest is really that spectacular then the world can wait 48 hours or so before you can post about it. It's not like mullets are gonna go out of fashion before Wednesday. Hockey hair is gonna stand the test of time, my friend.

There's a (very dusty and unused) drafts and collaborations page on the MeFi wiki that I whipped up oh ... seven (!!! WUT???) years ago.

And there's chat.

Or you can do what the man of twists and turns does in his profile and use that space to save post ideas and links.

Or create a ton of draft emails with post ideas, like I do, and then forget about them until you search for something else.

Same here. Half my Metafilter experience (or so it seems) is seeing a post and thinking, "Yeah, I saw that a few days ago, but I didn't know about X or Y, so I didn't post." So, yeah.

A MulletFest post should be short up front, but longer after the fold.

"Here is a link, enjoy" is the format primarily responsible for me making a lot more posts in the last couple of years than I used to. Heartily recommended.

You are soaking in it! We all are.

But realistically learning to sit with the itchy feeling is good practice for many other things in life and mods do this because they care.

And think how satisfying the release will be when that longed for moment arrives. Think of the wait as “the business on top” and that moment of sweet release as “the party in the back.”

(At first I read this as “Mueller-fest” and thought wow he already has festivals?)

Don't Sharpies have a specific mullet? That seems conspicuously absent, so I feel like a single link post of this would be incomplete, especially since the article is about an Australian competition. Bet you didn't expect criticism!

It is a standard reaction to making an FPP to within a half-hour discover something else that would make an equal-or-better FPP.

Live with it. It's literally every fucking time.

You know, we could have a discussion here about how MeFi has been one of the few places I still visit for the links and the discussion, and how over time websites seem to gradually devolve into being link-only visits for me (like most of reddit), or outright kill off their discussion to cause me to lose interest all together (say, Jalopnik or Boing Boing), and how maybe there's room for maybe adding more links, and if that small change can jog life and discussion back into the ecosphere as a website ages and slows down (less posts, but more mega-threads, anyone?)...

...but really, I recently found video evidence of my wife as a pre-teen with a she-mullet so bring on the hairstyle post, because I. Have. Tales.

The winner, 12-year-old Alex Keavy, wins on a combination of mullet strength and showmanship. He alone thought to use his mullet to its full potential in the dance-off, moshing theatrically to spread it down his front. He began cultivating the style 18 months ago, because “Dad always used to cut my hair, and it was always terrible”. Alex is gracious in victory, pledging to use some of his $50 prize money to buy his girlfriend a pie. “It’s not a hairstyle, it’s a lifestyle,” he declares. “Thanks to the judges, and to the hotel.”

So there is hope for the future. God bless the children.

I sadly no longer have my first drivers' licence, on which the photo was 17-year-old me sporting a mullet and a Pantera t-shirt.

On a serious note, a two-FPP-per-day limit would be a bit much.

I'd like to chime in and say:
