Why is MetaFilter only No.28 in the BlogShares online game? May 3, 2003 10:26 PM   Subscribe

Why is MetaFilter only No.28 in the BlogShares online game, recently written about on Rediff? What does it mean, if anything? Just how influential is MetaFilter, compared to other blogs? Is it really true that "The sphere of influence a blog is generally gauged by the blogs linking to it. That means a blog's importance grows if several other important (well-linked) bloggers link to it"?

And why is my good friend mattpfeff the largest MeFi shareholder? Should I start calling him Sir? ;)

Here is the recent MetaFilter thread on BlogShares, btw.

The Onion is 39, and it's not even a blog. I think it's just a measure of site popularity within the community of people participating, whatever it was intended to be originally.

A lot of blog inter-linking is along the lines of 'give a stroke, get one back' expectations to be linked to in the future. Since such expectations don't hold for linking to MetaFilter most bloggers wouldn't see the point.

In terms of measuring pure link lovin', The Blog Ecosystem is intersting to look at, although MetaFilter doesn't get a mention (I think blogs might have to ping the site to get added to the tally). Given some of the company in the Top 10, however, it might not be such a bad thing.

There's another Blogging Ecosystem that sprung up when N.Z. Bear put his on hiatus; it's more inclusive than just the political blogs, thus probably more useful, and MeFi is #13 on that list.

FYI: N.Z. Bear asked me to post the following:

Jimbob is correct, blogs do need to be manually registered to show up on the Ecosytem --- I'm pretty surprised nobody's ever submitted metafilter! Anyway, just because y'all are so special*, I went ahead and added MetaFilter directly myself. Scans are done every morning Pacific time, so it won't show up until tomorrow, but if you like, let the thread know to check back then. Take care...

* I'm quite certain he means this sincerely.

I eventually intend to sell my MeFi stake on eBay.

<vent>I am so sick of people talking about "blogging" like it is somehow important. Augh. Just *do* it, people, and stop philosophizing about it.</vent>

Wow, talk about insider trading. MeFi has jumped a whopping 5 places to No .23 since this thread started and Matt put up the MeFi grab bag, apparently adding quite a few links out.

This must have created a few hot investment items, right?

Take a look at these recent entries at charles gagalac's site to see some quick arbitrage in action.

There are so many loopholes in this game, I cant imagine that anybody could take the rankings seriously.

Vacapinta has just kindly given me 50 MetaFilter shares, thus inspiring me to execute a daring plan for domination of the market by sitting back and waiting for others to follow his benevolent example.

Mattpfeff? ;)

Meanwhile, MeFi is up to 22. Hmmm.... Has the fearsome gagalac's appetite been whetted?

Or what the choruses on those awful sixties girl groups used to sang:

Back to 20, but we've got the 2nd highest P/E ratio on the top 100, and the highest P/E ratio belongs to #88. Losers!

As long as we're crunching numbers, as of this post, Miguel has made 34% of the comments on this thread.

I'm just crunchin'.
