Bug: IE 5.0 for Mac, text formatting commands. April 6, 2001 9:57 PM   Subscribe

I am using IE 5.0 for Mac. The text formatting commands do not appear at the bottom of the main text box. Any ideas?

yeah, that browser doesn't support the javascript/dhtml commands necessary to do it. I hear Netscape has finally fixed the bugs in their 6.01 release, so I might be able to add support for that browser too, but for now it only works with IE 5+ on a PC.

I was just about to post a similar question:
I could not find any instructions how formatting works - html or ubb-style. Now I know why...

Why would you use a proprietary method on a site that has the purpose of filtering and discussing the *whole* web!? What it basically boils down to is that you exclude Mac users from (comfortably) posting on Metafilter. There are plenty of other standards-conforming solutions, from using clickable icons that insert tags into the input textbox like in the newer ubb versions to simply posting instructions on how to do it manually (I couldn't find any).
NS6 (in spite of beeing a memory hog and slow) and IE5/Mac are currently the browsers that come closest to "standards compliant" - thats what you should strife for. And if it works with them, it will also work with IE5+/PC.

Having let loose my harsh rant, let me tell you that Metafilter is one of the greatest sites I have found in a *long* time. It has great content, contributions are high level and users seem to interact in a respectful way. I will stay even if you don't support the Mac :)
