Last effective moratoria? April 7, 2004 1:50 PM   Subscribe

Has there ever been an effective MetaFilter moratorium? How long ago was it?

Is it time to declare a moratorium on moratoria?

I think I just imploded.

moratorium = censorship

(and don't give that 'government versus private' medium crap. ;-)

I think the moratorium on trackbacks is holding up pretty well.

I call for a moratorium on moratoriums and a censoring of all censors.

I think the last effective moratorium was when the processor fan blowed up real good.

Based on memory alone, I recall that there have been occasions where those who frequent MeTa have managed to agree that "Foo is bad and does not belong on MeFi" but, unfortunately, the MeTa-ites are but a small subset of the greater tribe of MeFi and, unless mathowie is sufficiently moved to make a moratorium official, the only real effect is that we get an extended argument saying "I thought we had agreed that Foo is bad and does not belong on MeFi, so why is this link about Foo allowed to remain?".

Calls for moratoriums and all the various forms of criticism of the posting/commenting style of various members are individually about as useful as pissing into the wind but, collectively, I believe they shape the "style" of MeFi over time and this is a good thing. Without the continuous process of analysing whatever sticks its head above the herd, things would slowly but surely approach oblivion like the frogs in that oft-quoted scientific experiment.

Why does this thread exist? Fantastical whim. I would declare a moratorium on fantastical whim, but it's a trade I make my living in.

I demand a moratorium on moratoria of moratoria!

When Matt had the admonishment on the sidebar and on the posting page not to post every new Iraq war story, people seemed to be generally holding it in. (Sometime right after the fighting broke out.)

(I think we could have discussed this topic in the PETA thread, though.)

Technically speaking, without tooting my horn too loudly, my call for a moratorium worked for a brief period, according to the last comment in the thread.

What is this, Post Whatever Pops Into My Head on MeTa Day?

the MeTa-ites are but a small subset of the greater tribe of MeFi

I used to try to remind people of this when there were long, earnest discussions on How We Can Make It All Better, but then I realized that (as with most things in life) nobody really cares about results, they just like earnest discussions. Hey, wouldn't it be neat if all comments had between 75 and 85 words? Discuss!

I vote for a "word count" display, right next to the spellchecker.

Stay off Shack's train!!. This movie is fantastic. Yet another enjoyable and violent story by Robert Aldrich. Lee Marvin plays a king among hobos who is determined to ride Ernest Borgnine's(he's called Shack) train. Borgnine is a hard-nosed comductor who keeps a closet full of implements(chains, etc.) to knock hobos off his train. Lee Marvin leads a young Keith Carradine on a tutorial of hitching a ride on trains and it's a very interesting ride. Great climactic train fighting!

languagehat, it's a quote of quonsar's immortal--despite being near instantly deleted by Matt--first comment to a particularly unctuous and long winded [even for] BlueTrain MetaTalk post.
