PETA Moratorium April 7, 2004 1:07 PM   Subscribe

Although I've been just as guilty of it during the past four years, can we have a moratorium on PETA news?

Why?

once people stop posting religion / iraq/ right/ left posts, then i think we can think about getting rid of PETA news.

PETA threads are always PETA bashing threads, and usually result in the same discussion as the last five. Nothing new. The latest one is actually the least offensive I've seen so far. Very little name calling.

No thanks. Most prefer more light, not less.

Although there IS a group on MetaFilter (and in America) that prefers a certain dimness on issues they find uncomfortable. Why is that?

Is this really a problem? I mean, I know this is a problem, but PETA is hardly even on my radar.

f&m: I think its moreso because PETA threads always amount to the same discussion...same thoughts, just rehashed with different words.

By that logic we should get rid of Metatalk.

As opposed to the Iraq threads?

oh, and f&m? GAFB.

and Flash movies, no more flash movies!
and knitting, I don't care about knitting,
and photoblogs,

I wish, for 5 simple minutes, that this community could keep clearly in mind the difference between a post and its comments. A post is out there for everybody to see, enjoy, think about, what have you. The comments involve choosing to throw your opinion into the fray as well as be exposed to other's ... or not.

Jenna Jamison has made frequent appearances on publically accessable network TV. (If you don't know who she is, google it, I dare you, but don't do that at work). You want to be outraged that attractive blonds you don't like are on TV? Fine ... you're a nutcase, but fine. Change the channel. If you want to know more about Jenna (or see more) you have to choose to do so, and if you get offended by THAT, than its your own freakin' choice that led you there.

If you see a PETA/Bush/Cheney/Iraq/SUV/GayMarraige/Nader/Over done oriental art-and-architecture post on the front page of MetaFilter, so what? No one forces you to discuss them on the Blue or here. Don't follow the links, don't jump into the discussion, and please ... for the love of God ... quit bitchen about it on MetaTalk.

The joke is that whatever else you say about them, PETA are masters of viral marketing. They make up a proposed billboard or some other such campaign, and whether they get it out there or not, the very concept of it gets coverage, leading someone to post it to the blue, trying to prove something about PETA and/or vegetarianism, resulting in a thread bringing much, much more attention to PETA and their favorite issues. In other words, to those who think PETA is counterproductive to their own cause, so is anyone who gives them more publicity to "expose" them.

Oh, and on preview: if you're gonna google, it's "Jameson" - or so I am led to understand...

Soyjoy, I tried it again and either one will work. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to "improve my health". ;-)

Jenna Jameson. Not picking on Wulfgar's spelling, I just want those googling folks to get the real deal.

Oh and post-post: I am blind. Soyjoy was there already. So was Wulfgar, apparently. So, I'm off now. Sorry.

Personally, I'm pretty tired of PETA and started tuning them out a year or so ago. I used to support what they do, but they're obnoxious headline grabbers that don't do anything to advance the cause to aid understanding. It's pure grandstanding. I haven't even read the thread, and I'm not going to.

It'd be nice if others refrained from posting links to their stuff, as I don't think it's compelling or interesting anymore, but I'm not going to make a rule about it.

Now that I think about it, maybe we should just get rid of logic. Who's with me?

jmd82, that doesn't make any sense.

quit bitchen about it on MetaTalk.

"I wish, for 5 simple minutes, that this community Wulfgar! could keep clearly in mind the difference between whining on Metatalk and attempting to have a discussion of community policy on Metatalk."

[/joke, pointed]

Also, moratoria are stupid. And so is whining, for that matter. But discussion of what is and isn't appropriate is what MeTa is for, even if the discussion's been flogged to death a million times before.
posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 4:47 PM on April 7, 2004

stav, I think you're still sleepy. You see, I never used the word "whining" (I don't like it when we talk about that ...), I used the word "bitchin" (we shouldn't be talkin' about that ...). Much different connotations. This isn't about what is appropriate community policy, its about what is appropriate community topic. And as you yourself have noted, moratoria are stupid.

So, good wonderchicken, have some coffee, read what I wrote in light of what's been written before, and bite me.

AFAIK (AIANAL) a PETA post about the latest PETA shock ad is to animal rights as a LGF post is to the I/P situation. OK?

Good call on the coffee -- I had just woken up. But I wasn't saying you were whining, Wulfgar!, I was saying that although whining sucks, and it could be said that what darren was doing was whining, he was also opening up a discussion about policy, which is what MeTa is for, and therefore you saying 'quit bitchen about it on MetaTalk' was and is counterproductive and contrary to the stated purpose of the Grey, which is 'a discussion area for topics specific to MetaFilter itself, ranging from bug reports to feature requests to questions of content.'

So sure, I'll bite you, if you want, but you have to bite me first. The buttockal region is particularly juicy and succulent today!

Hi,

I posted the link.

I thought it was an interesting piece. Coming from Vancouver (just a half hour drive from the Port Coquitlam pig farm), this story was big in the local news and in various news outlets in Canada.

The two local papers refused to have anything to do with the ad campaign and none of the billboard companies in the Greater Vancouver Area were willing to put the ad up.

However, the news segment did show the ad being used in other cities (a billboard sporting the latest PETA campaign was shown but I didn't catch which city), but I wasn't sure how that could have possibly slipped past whoever authorizes the content of the billboards to be posted.

The only reason I could think of, was that they were completely unaware of the Pickton murder situation here in Canada or else they simply didn't care and just wanted to be paid their money.

Either way, I felt it was important to bring it up in a public forum.

And how come every time I post something to MeFi, it inevitably ends up biting me in the ass on MeTa?!?

And Wulfgar, really is that any way to berate a chicken before you bite it? The PETA would surely be all over for that one! ;)
