lat/lon still on the "to do" list? April 26, 2004 7:10 AM Subscribe
The survey thread reminded me: are latitudes/longitudes for the "users near this user" feature still on the to do list?
I too would like this pony. I promise to curry it and feed it apples.

Yeah, it would be kind of neat. I'd be happy to do the map generating btw (it's pretty much a modified version of Image::Worldmap so if matt wants to do it himself there's not much stopping him either.
And I'm all for a danish meetup, as long as it's not in danmark.

wow, I didn't know there was a cpan project to automate mapping. Kickass.
Yeah, I can do the long/lat. Right now I'm converting us zip codes to rough long/lat estimates, so it won't be impossible to just switch over. I just have so many little fixes to do I don't know when I can do it. Hopefully soon.

I think you overestimate "to automate mapping". The map is in cylindrical projection, so you just divide the coordinates by 180 and add your (0,0). The CPAN module mainly does a simulated annealing approach to placing the labels. Once you have densities like in northern america on the survey map labels are out of the question though.

This is the only pony I want. All other ponies are only good for glue compared to this pony.
