That was nice of you, but... (don't post my stuff to mefi) May 12, 2004 10:58 AM   Subscribe

Er-
I certainly appreciate the thought, and the enthusiasm, but when the time comes I'll buy a text ad like anyone else. I don't think of Metafilter as my personal billboard.
Matt, please kill the thread, or move it back here to "metafilter-related", as that's about as close to relevant to this site as my book is.

dong_resin, ever think about running for president? You're much more humble and decent than any of the current candidates.

Dong, that was the most becoming moment of modesty I've ever seen on MeFi.

But congrats, Dr Resin.

Posts in the Blue should be relevant to this site too? Geez my trifecta posting of DPs is looking worse and worse :)

Congrats, dong_resin.

D. Resin... That is just excellent. Congrats!

I don't know about that. I consciously included the link to your original weblog entry because I think it's an important part of the post. As far as I know, it wasn't originally discussed on metafilter (unless my search messed up). Even by itself, your original entry may warrant a post, regardless of whether or not you're a member here.

In addition, I think it's interesting that a publisher would option a book deal based on a single, relatively short, blog entry. I will admit I considered posting it in the grey instead, but I eventually concluded that given the original entry (and to a lesser extent the follow-up entry) it was worth posting to the blue.

Also, it's not really your personal billboard if someone else posts it. Of course, if you really don't want it up there, I have no problem with Matt deleting/moving it--I just don't see a need to do so.

Carry on.

One more thing: the tone of the post is enthusiastic and light--maybe too much so--because I thought it was a fun, light topic. Besides, with everyone complaining about too much Iraq, I thought something humorous and positive would be a nice change, not because I was trying to increase book sales (not that I'd be against it, mind you). You can still buy text ads in September when everyone has forgotten my thread.

Congratulations D.Resin. I think also it's very humble of you to ask to have the post (re)moved. I don't mind it. BTW was that a cheeee-WA-WA I saw.

Ah, the travails of the tormented auteur... First he must grapple with the harrowing ordeal of penning his oeuvre, only to be violently thrust into the vulgar public eye by some MeFi philistine.
Seriously, dongresin, I admire your gesture, but hey, it's an interesting subject. Perhaps a MeTa thread would be best, but anyway it is newsworthy. Our own quonsar, for instance, secretly daydreams of singing the Stooges' "I Want to be Your Dog" to Paris Hilton, you know? Would you like to deprive quonsar from reading new material about his beloved Paris Hilton?

Dear Mr. Resin:

You are the shizzle. While we appreciate your humility, we will honor you however we see fit. Enjoy it now, before the inevitable backlash begins.

Thank you.

After reading his trenchant take on Don Rumsfeld, I think it's a terrible waste that he's writing about Paris (who now?) Hilton.

I still want a signed copy though.

(And what, you guys are BUYING the humble act?)

if you were actually offered a book deal because of your blog post, then that's an interesting story about the internet, business, and traditional media. articles will be sure to follow (kind of like the julie/julia project - are there other examples?)

good luck with the book! of course, be prepared for the smart-ass derision of hundreds of blogging fools who think they are funnier than you and deserve it twice as much.

I didn't think of that way, _sirmissalot_ , I just had a bad reaction to seeing a product announcement on the blue.

I feel very thankful towards this site, the idea of being seen as taking advantage is horrifying.

Fear not. When one of our own signs a book deal, we all cheer.
posted by scarabic at 12:08 PM on May 12, 2004

FWIW dong_resin I didn't see it that way. Since you have been a very regular contributor to MeFi for a long time I think folks will give you a little more slack in that arena (as opposed to say someone like ME getting a FPP about a book I just wrote.)

Also, it's not like YOU posted it trying to drum up support for your own book (*narrows eyes* unless you're posting as TGC... j/k)

Either way, your attitude is appreciated for sure and the rest of us MeFi folk who also happen to blog can still dream that big dream: "Someday maybe *I* can be like D. Resin!"

And Mr. Resin, you've really gone over the top with this Oh Please! Not a MeFi Thread About Me! Let's Start a Whole Additional Thread About Me ruse. It's brilliant!

Tomorrow: How should I deal with people wanting to post threads about me on Metafilter? Heh.

This thread should be in "bugs".

Dong, did the publishing company originally see the tinkerbell bit, or at least your blog, via a gawker link?

Some suggestions:

-I liked Dong better before he sold out.
-More dong, less resin please.
-Dong wrote a book? Thanks, I'll wait for the movie. Which will also suck.
(var.)
-Dong got paid to write a book? They're commissioning remainders now?

(I kid because I love, in a way that is just not wholesome)

I would think so, liam, it's probably the most widely read site that linked to that post.

Damn. I was going to post it but I've had the electricians in all day. But TGC did an excellent job - though not enough bombast and fawning, as usual with you mincing North Americans - and I'm dying to read dong's book more than anyone here, wanna fight?

Or you actually are Paris Hilton's dog, cleverly posing as a human in some sort of Hitchcock-esque double blind. Either way, I detect foul play.

Look, I've just really, really had enough of this phrase. Chaps with an ass in them are pants, all right? Assless is the modifier that makes the pants into the chaps. Chaps==pants with no ass in them. OK? Are we all clear on the concept?
