I certainly appreciate the thought, and the enthusiasm, but when the time comes I'll buy a text ad like anyone else. I don't think of Metafilter as my personal billboard.
Matt, please kill the thread, or move it back here to "metafilter-related", as that's about as close to relevant to this site as my book is.

I don't know about that. I consciously included the link to your original weblog entry because I think it's an important part of the post. As far as I know, it wasn't originally discussed on metafilter (unless my search messed up). Even by itself, your original entry may warrant a post, regardless of whether or not you're a member here.

In addition, I think it's interesting that a publisher would option a book deal based on a single, relatively short, blog entry. I will admit I considered posting it in the grey instead, but I eventually concluded that given the original entry (and to a lesser extent the follow-up entry) it was worth posting to the blue.

Also, it's not really your personal billboard if someone else posts it. Of course, if you really don't want it up there, I have no problem with Matt deleting/moving it--I just don't see a need to do so.

One more thing: the tone of the post is enthusiastic and light--maybe too much so--because I thought it was a fun, light topic. Besides, with everyone complaining about too much Iraq, I thought something humorous and positive would be a nice change, not because I was trying to increase book sales (not that I'd be against it, mind you). You can still buy text ads in September when everyone has forgotten my thread.

if you were actually offered a book deal because of your blog post, then that's an interesting story about the internet, business, and traditional media. articles will be sure to follow (kind of like the julie/julia project - are there other examples?)

good luck with the book! of course, be prepared for the smart-ass derision of hundreds of blogging fools who think they are funnier than you and deserve it twice as much.

FWIW dong_resin I didn't see it that way. Since you have been a very regular contributor to MeFi for a long time I think folks will give you a little more slack in that arena (as opposed to say someone like ME getting a FPP about a book I just wrote.)

Also, it's not like YOU posted it trying to drum up support for your own book (*narrows eyes* unless you're posting as TGC... j/k)

Either way, your attitude is appreciated for sure and the rest of us MeFi folk who also happen to blog can still dream that big dream: "Someday maybe *I* can be like D. Resin!"
