Opening up registration again? July 10, 2001 9:54 AM   Subscribe

After/Upon the deluge. I feel somewhat self-conscious writing this since I only discovered Mefi in March. Nonetheless, I wonder if Matt has considered how to re-open Metafilter to new members. At this point, the pent-up demand is likely quite large, which could cause a kind of chaos. So I would suggest the when the gate re-opens, it be done in phases: maybe a certain number of posters per-day or per-week for a certain number of weeks; it's how we would do things back in Paramus. Just a thought.

They are sneaking in, y'know. Technically, we have only 9075 members, but here's user 9717, for example. There's a back door.

I just hope the front door is open in time for us to shower valuable prizes on user 10000, when he/she arrives.

I think you might be up to 15K by now.

Actually, 9717 is the highest so far.

You can still sign up at the 5k, which gets you a MeFi account too. That's where all the Zippity Boo Ba are coming from.

Zippity Boo Ba

So that's the plural of BOP™

I don't think it will be a problem. I'm going to turn new users back on tonight, and they'll be required to authenticate their email, which should slow down the growth slightly.

How about requiring that retroactively for all members? No e-mail addy, no posty.

Second that.

Except that there should be an exemption for baby Jesus.

If baby Jesus really wants a MeFi account, I'm sure he too can be bothered to set up an @yahoo.com email just for us. I mean, he IS the son of God & all.. how hard could it be? Plus then I'd have a place to email all those pressing questions that've been bothering me all these years.

Don't you think baby Jesus could get a TLD? Or is the ICANN just that powerful?

I vote "yea" on the email confirmation for all members, though it might be a whopping server load if it's simultaneous.

I vote "yea" on email.

I'll vote "Yea" on the e-mail requirement for all... at one time, also, we had discussed extending the quarantine time before allowing folks to post to the home page. I'd certainly like to see that as well...

Comments?

Matt: you can institute the e-mail requirement even without Vis10n's permission...

As User 9816, I would like to say that maybe the front door should never be opened. Instead, have everyone go through the same process I did, where they read MetaFilter for awhile, then move on to MetaTalk, where they stumble onto this thread telling them about the backdoor at the5k. That way, most of the people who sign on will presumably have an inking about what MetaFilter's all about beforehand. Heck, I've even read all of 1142! Actually, that's a lie. I think my eyes glazed over when daveadams talked about installing FreeBSD.

And finally, the real reason I'm posting this is so mathowie can know I'm here and registered and delete me if he doesn't approve.

Thanks.
