"oops! god no, i take it back!" button August 25, 2004 5:29 PM Subscribe
Speaking of the Value of D'oh: crush-onastick suggested a "oops! god no, i take it back!" button and ook added "But it should disappear once somebody else has posted after you, so people can't delete something from the middle of a thread.". I thought it was a good idea, but I should: I suggested the same thing in February 2000, only I wanted to call it a "D'oh" button. Less a pony, more an old grey mare?
yeah. make it fucking futurama oriented. or fucking family guy.

It was 3.5 years ago. I've matured since then. Now I do "Good Eats" references.

I want a button that slips everyone a roofie, so I can say whatever I want and nobody will remember it in the morning. Yeah.

Wait, I changed my mind. I want an "Oops!" button that'll give me back the three hours that magically disappear every time I hit this site.

It would be so cool to have something other than Simpson's refs.
There's not nearly enough Buckaroo Banzai references,
I think we should call it "the Big Pink Box (button)"
or in a Buffy nod, we could call it the "Button of Thoth"
(for no other good reason)
or Quantum Leap, did that little walkie-talkie thing have a name?
You use it to back in time and right the wrongs.

We should call it the "OH SHIT I FUCKED UP!" button. Or OSIFU for short. It could be prenounced like a drunken, slurred "officer."

But keswick, it already exists! It's called MetaTalk or something. ;)

No, as I recall, it's just you who posts threads to MeTa to announce that you fucked-up, Miguel.

I've compared MeFi's web interface to the text-only unix bbs Picospan, which originated on Ann Arbor's M-NET. Pico had linear threads like MeFi.
There was an "oh shit" function called scribble. You could scribble your post (or the site, or conference, admin might do it for you), which would render it invisible to users with default settings. (You could change it so that you would see scribbled items.) This was in addition to a wholesale deletion function also accessible to the poster or admins.
In both cases the erasure of a post could render parts of succeeding replies unintelligible, but that was a social effect.

Fucked up has no hyphen, Bore. For someone who loves the word "fuck" so much, you seem singularly ignorant of what it means and how it's used. It's not fuck-off either, btw.

That's some pretty lame-ass pedantry there, Miguel, too weak to get the response you desire. I suggest another MeTa post threatening to leave—that should raise your flaccid, er, spirits.

What happened to the old EB? (And when I mean old, I mean of course, 4 months). You were so earnest, so intent on being really interesting and thoughtful. Now, you seem to have transformed into a cruel and cynical bore. If 4 months on the 'filter can do that to you, maybe you need a short break and a breath of fresh air.
Seriously.

I'm sorry. I'm just upset that Miguel threw a little tantrum and threatened to leave and then, you know, didn't. It was very cruel of him. It's left me cynical and bitter.

A web-board I'm a regular on has a feature just like this. It puts a [delete] buttin right next to your post if it's the most recent one in the room/thread. It hasn't been abused there, and I don't think it'll be abused here.
