Do you ever wish you could change your username? What would you change it to?

Despite recent rumors that Mel Brooks is planning a sequel, the Spaceballs reference meme has gotten, shall we say, dated since I started using this handle on my BBS back in '93. So I think I'm ready for a change. I just don't think I'm clever enough to come up with a good one.

I can't really decide, but I like my current username. I also have an eel in my shirt.
posted by Kwantsar at 10:02 PM on October 1, 2004

What a coincidence; My hovercraft is full of eels.

Getting back to PrinceValium's question: No, not really, but then again I just use my initials which is admittedly rather dull, not to mention unpronouncable and really annoying at meetups. So perhaps I would like to change it… Hmm… Damn you.

I like my user name because it connects to my real name, but I keep getting myself confused with chaz. Also, I suspect that when I first signed up Matt thought that I was some kind of teenaged troublemaker with a devilish agenda, because he deleted a couple of my comments, and as you know, I'm pretty innocuous. I think my current favorite mefite name is NotMyselfRightNow, and of course, always and forever, LittleMissCranky.
posted by taz at 11:23 PM on October 1, 2004

I kinda regret the space and capitalization now, since it's so different than (most) everyone else. I suspected that there wouldn't be a restriction against spaces, and it seemed silly to me to adopt the cramped username style when it wasn't necessary. But now I sort of don't like that it's as different as it is. With my high profile and all, anyway.

I don't have anything better to change it to, though. Unless it was "kmellis", which is, um, "me". "Keith M Ellis". I'm "kmellis" everywhere, pretty much, since 93. I didn't use that name, though, because there's a "kmel" here on MeFi and I wanted to avoid any confusion. Anyway, again, it's unusual for me to have a honest-to-goodness pseudonym. I'm not sure I like it, actually. It's like it's this other identity. That's sort of neat, in a way, but it also makes me uncomfortable. I'm me. I don't particularly have any desire to have an alter-ego. I realize that that's a big attraction to many other people. I'm kinda compulsively honest and not comfortable with facades or masquerades, even when they're socially acceptable and, well, healthy.

Oh, and yeah, I too love the name "LittleMissCranky". It's just so evocative. Great name.
posted by Ethereal Bligh at 11:36 PM on October 1, 2004

I signed up with this username back when I was strictly going by a pseudonym online. Now that I go by my first name (Valette) everywhere else, it would be nice to go by my first name here as well.

Oh, yeah, FidelDonson, some of my friends IRL are calling me "taz", too. It was a slight shock the first time I heard it said out loud, but it feels sort of natural. I've been called "T" (and variations - Miss T, Lady T, Big T, T-Spot, etc.) a lot in the past. I have an old username floating around out there somewhere. I signed up back in 2000 or early 2001 expecting to be a complete troll but never followed through. Later in 2001 I actually grew a little affectionate toward this place and signed up using my real name.

Now I've been trying to track down that old account to see what assinine things I said but can't remember the name I used so it'll just have to float out there; a record of my former destructive self.

Yeah, I do want to change my username.

Not to derail but I had a blast while trying to find my old username. I ran across a lot of users on MeFi who got accounts, made one (1) comment and then disappeared (the "One Hit Wonders" of Mefi if you will). Some of the comments were innocuous - "Yes, I agree" type stuff and others were just bizarre and/or hilarious.

Too bad some the new blood dries up so quick.

I lament my current choice on a daily basis, however. It was just an e-mail address I started using when I was 18. Now, some four years later, I'm more than a little disappointed in my earlier, not-so-fresh self.

I like my initials and I like their neutrality, that in themselves there is nothing much to create expectation or some kind of "pre-persona", that a person would imagine before reading my comment. Of course, I like some of the other more inventive usernames I've used and it's definitely more fun to have a series of interesting names than if everyone were to just use their initials - but I appreciate the straightforward ones too.

It's also funny what different people get from a name - whether you know a reference, whether you think it's a boring/blatant reference or a smart/clever one... or if it's not a reference (or not one you know), whether you find it subtle and witty or coy or self-congratulatory or what. There's a lot in a name. (Can you imagine if amberglow had been Drooper?)

I agree on 'turtles...' and 'notmyself...' (although I imagine it's a pain to login.)

Me, I've discovered that there are relatively few other Iain Banks drooling fanboys here (hi adrianhon!), so people end up abbreviating me to ROU, which is just plain wrong -- dammit, the *name* part of the username is Xenophobe, an ROU is just what the good ship Xenophobe --is--.*

So anyway, if I had it over I'd probably be a different bloodthirsty killing machine, like Skaffen-Amtiskaw or ED-209. Heh, funny. In Swedish Dagwood is Dagobert and he loves sandwiches. Dunno if he ever had a generation sandwich.

Name chosen by SO [gentlemanly I allowed her to sign up first, gleefully awaiting my turn, only to discover that the window of opportunity had closed. Dang. And to add insult to injury we got up at 3 in the morning to sign up... Bleh.]

The handles I had considered for myself, had I gotten to get my own account, were either SayMyName or something like MeFiSto, Mephisto, MEFIstofeles etc. [Hopefully I'll get my chance to change some day.]

Now it works as a shared account, but I probably use it 80% of the time. Poetic justice, maybe.

When in college I had a philosophy book that had, quite literally, every important philosopher from 1000 BC to 1950 excerpted. It was an enormous book and edited by Dagobert Runes. Whenever I and my now-wife would have a disagreement about a philosopher, we'd settle it by "consulting Dagobert." I confess, sir, that when I see your handle I always think of consulting you.

"Dagobert Runes"
A great, great name. It sounds like a minor character from a Mervyn Peake novel.

I have two online names and my normal old name is one of them. The other one, which would have to be my second choice here [and is my alias or whatever on flickr] is iamthebestartist. I am sometimes partial to being called The Edgy Hammock Queen.

Then my first and middle name could be spelt out of the letters. If you ever looked at my profile it would explain this better.

Don't worry, he's putting you on. There's no such thing as 3 in the morning.

Yeah, well, ok I made that up. I don't really have a MeFi-account. I just post, y'know.

You can call me login, if you like

I still like Secret Life of Gravy very much-- it's a bit whimsical and, well, a bit mysterious. I just wish the initials didn't spell "slog." Slog is not an attractive verb. I would hate to think of myself as slogging through life.

Maybe I should have named myself Secret Life of Broccoli-- oh wait! That's worse.

Secret Life in Tea? Secret Life under Tobacco? Secret Life after Gristle?

I made a list of names in preparation for The Day and then, as soon as I was able to get on -- heart pounding, brow sweating -- hated all of them and ended up, somehow, with this name which, as soon as I'd gotten an account, hated even more than the others.

So, yeah, I'd like to change my name. However, I'm pretty sure that I'd have the same problem next time around.

At least it's fun to say: "papercakepapercakepapercake..."

I just want to go on record as HATING my mefi handle. (When I initially signed up, I didn't put much thought into it, because I didn't think I would stop by that often. It's now three years later, for the record...) Never thought about what I would change it to though, ooblil could be cool though...
