Boston Meetup January 13, 2005 6:38 AM   Subscribe

The 2005 Boston Mefi Meetup is still on! 7:30 at The Burren in Davis Square Friday the 14th (tomorrow). Any MeFibrarians who are in town for ALA are encouraged to attend, as are all you civilians.

Banjo and I will likely be there a bit early. I'm sure you'll be able to identify us by our sheer awesomeatude. Or maybe we'll have a sign. I dunno.

I'll be there, with boyfriend and sister in tow. I will probably have a pen sticking out of my hair someplace.

I was gonna go until you used the word "Mefibrarians".

So I'm interested in this, and will need to be in Cambridge later that night, anyway. But here I am, a longtime-lurker-turned-neoFite, and I'm wondering what these meetups are all about. What to expect? Do these tend to attract veteran MeFites who know one another already, or are they wiiide open cocktail/shindig/schmoozes? Just curious.

In this case I don't think many of us know each other except the people who live together already. The meetups are wide open excuses for people who know each other only in the online world of MeFi to get together and hang out in person. We had quite a few when I lived in Seattle and there was always a mix of people who knew each other [usually from former meetups] and new people who just dropped in. People often bring non-MeFi friends and partners. There's usually drinking -- though there were many teetotalers in the MeFi Sea group -- and food, and the obligatory shout-out choruses. Feel free to drop on by. If we look like a group of slavering dorks, you can just walk in and walk right out again, we certainly don't know what you look like.

I want to be there but I have to work...can you guys save an empty chair for me to hang out in spirit?

This sounds like a worthwhile exercise - as an Allstonite I don't get over to Davis Square much anymore, but it's a short hop on the bike. Sounds good to me!

This thread seems to be eating posts.

I will most likely be able to make it.

Never mind. I am suffering from Post-post confusion.

I should be able to make it, although Miko raises some good points.

Inky and I will be there too. She'll be the cute one, I'll be the chubby, balding one.

I will be there in spirit.

And I had better get an ass-shoutout.

Miko, not to worry, the initiation ritual is brief, and, c'mon, admit it, you've been wanting a tattoo, haven't you?

Just kiddin, it's sort of odd to meet people that you know eletronically only. Like meeting imaginary friends. I went to one MeFi meetup and have been to meetups with imaginary pals from another site. Always fun and interesting, notwithstanding the slavering dorks, one of which I am proud to be.

I somehow missed the original post, but if I can manage it, I will.

I may have given the impression that I am not a slavering dork. I regret the error.

I'll be there, but not having attended one of these events before is there some sort of secret handshake or something? Or do we all identify ourselves by wearing pens stuck in our hair?

crapcrapcrapcrapcrap I can't make it. stupid job.

Getting there on time might entail hanging up on my client before the end of a conference call, but I'll be there... ;-)

i'll be there! will have non-mefite librarian bf with me, too.

i'm the girl in this pic, so you know who to seek out.

I just spoke on Wednesday at this Library conference, which I guess makes me some kind of Librarian-by-proxy. I desperately wish I could go -- the first one I went to was a blast, and meeting the famous jessamyn would be an honor. However, I have to work. Drink to me (or for me), ok?

And I had better get an ass-shoutout

??

You want people to shout at you with their ass? I don't get it.....

I'll be there. I'll look for pens sticking out of folks hair.

I'm still disfigured and morbidly obese. And I'm still not over the pain of my bad librarian experience. The pain is too great for me to go into detail but I'll just say "story hour" and leave it at that.

As the aforementioned Banjo, I'll be there. I am a tiny redhead, and I'll be wearing big white boots. The boots are pretty hard to miss.

"You want people to shout at you with their ass? I don't get it....."

Ass-shoutouts. I don't really get it either, but it's amusing in an infantile way. Which is what it's all really about, anyway.

I didn't go. Though I did think about it for a synapse or three.

No ass-shoutout for YOU, crash!
posted by yhbc at 8:08 PM on January 14, 2005

Well, let's hold the option open for a while. Maybe you DID get ass-shoutouts, just not from me. We'll see, I'm sure, when the Liberians or libertarians or whatever the heck they were get back.

Heh. The spell-checker suggests "Massachusetts" as a replacement for "ass-shoutouts". I love it when a plan comes together.

Sorry I didn't make it. Hope everyone had a great time.

I was passing through the neighborhood briefly around 9:00 and stopped in at the Burren. I asked a couple of largish groups "Metafilter?" and they looked back at me with the unspoken question "lunatic?". And I'm not talking about the private party of assistant regional sales managers in the back. Maybe you'd all left by then. Perhaps next time.

Actually, I think there was a motion on the table to crash that lil' party....

I look more drunk than I think I was in those pictures. It was fun to meet everyone.
