Antipodean meetup? Anyone interested in catching up in Sydney in the next few weeks?

I've been a member and serious lurker for a while and I've been heartened by how many new members there are from Australia and New Zealand (and how many long term members from oz occasionally raise their heads).

Would anyone be interested in a meet up in Sydney? It could be as glamorous as cocktails on the harbour, or low key as tea in Glebe. I personally favour schooners in Erskineville, but I'm open for suggestions if anyone is keen.

so...em..what? Do we have a plan or such?

Well, it has to be this weekend or April seeing as you're Aliceing dhruva. That is unless peacay emailed arha and said "Don't even think about it, you should have seen what happened last time." So if this thing is to have legs what about Friday night, April 1 (seriously) at the Erko, say 7.

I may be able to make it - depending on schedule. Commuting from the Gold Coast. Sound like fun in any case.

I lead a virtual life - since fatherhood - fuckit, maybe it's time to see other mefites in the flesh (only to find they're either 12 year olds or 65 year olds, or worse still - are just like me), drink beer, smoke joints, get in a fight, start a riot, get arrested - end up on TV.

How do we identify each other?

I'm the pasty skinned one - with bags under each eye and no hair.

April 1 sounds good. Directions etc, would be very helpful.

tellurian........I'd just been obfuscating and wrote to arha seeking some motivation actually ;- )......no response as yet..........np

Ummm....Erko? 102 Erskineville rd??.........I can't for the life of me remember where the hell that is...(strange, because I used to live there!).......It must be on the opposite side of the road to the Imperial + Rose of Australia and up at the Newtown end as far as I can deduce..........yellow pages maps failed.

Perhaps the Rose of Australia    pub?..........it's within 100m of the station......I hear it has been done up - my cousin had a nice meal there 2 weeks ago (that's just by the by.....food being optional of course).
[they have live music there on fridays.....jazz if they are still following past traditions]

Friday 1 April .... 7pm ok ? Any dissenters?

(when you get out of Erskineville station turn left and it is on your left on the next corner)

I.D. - Wear a baseball hat?? Umm....naked? Or??
(hmm.....Friday will be busy at any pub)

beers at the erko (or elsewhere - i'm easy to please) from seven on the first works for me too.

just tell me they've got coopers on tap and i'll be a happy man.

i'll be the short guy with the pony tail and the sunglasses.

(this isn't an april fools thing is it?)

map.

Thanks for the map, sol-disant. I don't think I've been in Newtown before.

Rose of Australia is a way cool pub. Upstairs is a games room with jenga, scrabble, etc. They also have dining on the path outside, but it gets very, very busy. The Erskineville Hotel is much further downmarket but wouldn't be as busy. It has a wonderfully horrible concreted back garden and we should be able to pick-up a fight or two. They're so close to each other we could do them both anyway.

Meet at Erko then! Done.

I was serious about baseball caps as I.D. .....I am not going to be able to remember people's descriptions (although pasty, bags under eyes might be be a lead)

Antipodean in the house!

Unfortunately, I think I'll be o/s by the time 1 April rolls around, but if not, I'll see you suckas then.

Either way, take lots of photos in compromising situations, please.

(And thanks for the heads-up mail, tellurian)

i do have a severe hardon for scrabble, but the slab back yard is also not without a certain appeal.

so why should we choose? both i say! hurrah for both pubs! and it does double our chances of a fight after all...

caps as i.d. are fine with me also. and compromising photos are my specialty.

also, thanks for the mail tellurian.

Sydney, Sydney, Sydney, it's always about Sydney isn't it? I kid, of course, cheers for letting us know tellurian. I believe there's a few Melbournians floating around on here. (I was wondering how you figured out who is from Oz though? Not some cool function I'm missing out on?)
posted by Onanist at 12:41 AM on March 10, 2005

Here's a Melbournian. And he likes a drink now and then. Do we have a quorum of Southerners? I can think of about a bazillion pubs/clubs/wine bars etc that would be suitable.

And again, thanks to tellurian for his community announcement mail.

Apologies, peacay, for not responding ... been having a housing crisis. April 1st would be cool, provided I'm not homeless by then. Can we make it the Rose of Australia?

I'd love to be there, only I think I'll be o/s then, too. Oh, and the commute from Brisbane might be a bit much ;)

But if there are any _real_ aussies (read: Qld'ers) in the house who want a meetup..... ;)

Damn. April 1st is my and the hubbie's five-year anniversary, and we've already got plans. Count me in for the next one, though.
