I'm in. When?
posted by CunningLinguist at 2:10 PM on April 5, 2005

Sure. Can we do a Friday, though? The L is running as the Shuttle Bus of Doom (from Lorimer) every weekend in April, and I'd like to only have to choose between it & a car on the return trip. Not this Friday, however.
posted by dame at 2:12 PM on April 5, 2005

Yes, let's do it in Astoria.

Next friday is the 15th. And with taxes out of the way, I can play.
Will the Bohemian be sunny and warm enough by then?

put me down as a definite maybe.

Please no Astoria. I already gots subway problems. Taking three trains (including walking between them) on top of a shuttle bus is beyond me, yet I miss you all. I will totally come out there in summer, though.

Plus, if we go back to the Magician, we could cupcakes. Yummy, tasty, wonderful cupcakes.
posted by dame at 2:41 PM on April 5, 2005

yup--cupcakes! (early tho--they got pissy when we were taking too much space there)

we also have a new NY Mefite to welcome! (maybe more than one?)
posted by amberglow at 3:04 PM on April 5, 2005

Can we try Manhattan (better subways situation). I'm coming in from Jersey (work... I only go to the Jersey for the money, I swear..) so the island works best... Is that OK with everyone? If it's OK with you, suggestion (Bar? Cafe?)
posted by TNLNYC at 3:07 PM on April 5, 2005

BTW, 15th sounds good.. Is everyone OK for that or are NYC Mefiites putting in last minute work to get their taxes out?

Friday the 15th- I would love to be there! (Friday is so much better than Saturday) Just say when.

amberglow: "early tho--they got pissy when we were taking too much space there"

You know, if I wasn't there last time, I'd call you crazy. In fact, when they were getting pissy, I called them crazy. But by 8pm, that place was fricken packed. It was really, really, really nice during happy hour, though. Do it on a Friday, and I'm a definite maybe, too. Any other day, and I'm a much less firm maybe.

I probably won't be able to make it if it's on the 15th, as I'm away that weekend, but otherwise I will try to come. Now that I tend to work till 7, downtown, I'll likely be later to any Village/Midtown meetups than I used to be. Not that I'm exactly a fixture :D

Hail Manhattan! I'll try my best to get there!

Oh, don't do that! Who is it?

Also, we should do the Mars 2112 thing again sometime, it was kitschy but it was still a fun atmosphere, especially since it wasn't very crowded.

So: Magician early & then moving on to less cranky climes. If no one else volunteers, I can put my number up on my user page so the late can find us.

The Magician (118 Rivington St, New York, NY 10002)

posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 6:47 PM on April 6, 2005 [1 favorite]

I wouldn't. But then again I'm here all the time. But the Crooklynites don't dig our funky vibe, and the Manhattanites get a nosebleed if the cross the 59th street bridge, so the MeFi Astorians are screwed I guess.
posted by jonmc at 6:51 PM on April 6, 2005

Well, damn. I'm going away for the weekend that afternoon. To New Jersey. D'oh!

Have fun, all.
posted by Decani at 6:56 PM on April 6, 2005

It has nothing to do with vibe, and if it were a question of even *two* trains, sure. But when you have people coming from Jersey, Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan, Manhattan is central.

Have you ever noticed that none of the Brooklynites insist we have meetups here? I'd love it if I could just roll out of my house and into a barful of MeFites. But when you move to an outer borough, you sacrifice proximity for cheap rent. Ignoring that and demanding people come to you whatever the distance is just being a bad sport. And that sucks.
posted by dame at 7:01 PM on April 6, 2005

Really! If you live in Astoria, you take the N/W & transfer to the F--bam, you're there. Me, I have to walk fifteen minutes to the M, take the L to First & walk fifteen minutes, or be lazy and take the L to Sixth, then take the F back the way I came. Am I bitching about it? No, because everyone can get there.

Get over your lame-ass Queens-living selves already. People will come in the summer for the beer garden. Jeebus.

You don't have anyplace as cool as Bohemian Hall. And I'm still coming.
posted by jonmc at 7:06 PM on April 6, 2005

There are certainly bars *I* prefer to it. But it isn't my party, so I want to maximize ease. Look, I'm taking the Shuttle Bus of Doom for you people. And wah! you have to spend, what, forty minutes on two trains that come all the damn time.
posted by dame at 7:14 PM on April 6, 2005

Bars where you can smoke?

I'm just fuckin' with ya, dame. But this interboro rivalry is cool ina West Side Story kind of way.

*prances around with switchblade*
posted by jonmc at 7:34 PM on April 6, 2005

Why, yes, we do have bars where you can smoke--inside. Bars that look like City of Lost Children (or Cité des enfants perdus, as us educated Brooklyn-dwellers say). Bars with desserts that will charm your pants off and wine that removes the rest of the outfit. But I'm not allowed to tell those troglodytes from Queens about them. Ruins the atmosphere.
posted by dame at 7:43 PM on April 6, 2005

Yeah, but out hre in Queens, we have bars filled with old guys from back in the day who'll tell you endless stories about the New York that was if you buy 'em a beer, and real Irish bars that still unironically have "Danny Boy," on the jukebox. in Brooklyn you're more likeley to end up sitting next to a design major from Grosse Pointe in an overpriced 'vintage' t-shirt commerating a summercamp he never went to.

Also there are two Queens, Urban Queens which extends to Corona, and Deep Queens, which is everything beyond. But luckily the whole borough is so gauche that it's gentrification proof.

and I hate wine.
posted by jonmc at 7:57 PM on April 6, 2005

But jon, I want to fuck design majors from Grosse Pointe, not dirty old men. And I wasn't dumb enough to buy into that whole giving-up-exciting-sex-for-security thing you people call "monogamy."

And of course you don't like wine: YOU LIVE IN QUEENS. (But I'd hardly call LIC gentrification-proof.)

You call that a switchblade?
posted by dame at 8:03 PM on April 6, 2005

Don't whine to me about having to take an extra train. For the record, I have to race out of work at 6:30, drive to my grandmother's in Washington Heights (free parking) which could take 10 min or 30 depending on traffic, then grab the A train downtown, then find my way to the DMZ line or whatever the fuck goes by the Williamsburg Bridge.

Next time, I'm just calling for a North Jersey meetup and NOT IN HOBOKEN. Somewhere where there is parking. Maybe a picnic in Rockland Lake State Park, which would be nice because it's not actually IN New Jersey. But no bridges will have to be crossed!

So, in short, change me to a maybe. And if I'm coming, expect me to be late. Seriously, though, I just found out I may need to be in Pittsburgh that Saturday to settle my father's estate (old business, sadly).

Again, as a n00b, I'm sure you are all fascinated by the details of my life! You are also wishing there was a limit for comment lengt

But jon, I want to fuck design majors from Grosse Pointe, not dirty old men.

I'm a happily coupled family-values kind of guy, so that's irrelevant and I'd much rather shoot the shit with the old guys, and they always love me because I know who Murray The K is.

(But I'd hardly call LIC gentrification-proof.)

I'm all the way up in Ditmars, and the hipsters don't want to live with hairy drunken greeks, and the ones who do are content to become part of the neighborhood rather than take over. So we manage to have gourmet coffee and old school delis with salami hanging from the ceiling living in harmony.

And I wasn't dumb enough to buy into that whole giving-up-exciting-sex-for-security thing you people call "monogamy."

Eideteker: Take the A to West 4th & switch to the F there. Easy peasy. And I hope you can make it. You can totally be a dancer in the jonmc & dame presentation of "Outer Borough Story."

But for the record, if it were in Astoria, I would have to take three trains, including the G, and walk from the G to the N/W. I'll do it in the summer.

But my Uncle Genio lived on Staten Island when I was a kid and I had a blast spending summer at his place. They even had a neighborhood bookmobile (my secret ambition is to be a bookmobile driver, or dress in a banana costume and do Bic pen commercials. have I said too much? What the hell...)

Seriously, I wasn't terribly serious. However, I do have my own gripes.

I'm just tired of carting myself hither and yon. It's not central to MetaFilter, it's just part of living here. People NEVER come to Queens; it's like it's 19th Century Deepest Darkest Africa or you'll get poisoned by natives in the Amazon.

I ALWAYS have to go somewhere else, whether it be any of the other four boroughs. I've lived in Astoria for several years now and the only person that comes over is my girlfriend.

I don't agree that it's a pain in the ass to get to Queens because I commute from Queens to Brooklyn all the time (the biggest pain in the ass for me is Lower Manhattan). However, if you do believe that, the flipside is also true; it's a pain in the ass for us Queens people to get where you are.

Anyway, I may show up Saturday and I'll definitely help the Astorians put on a show this Summer.

*please imagine this whole post delivered in a very whiny Seymour Krelboyne voice*

Then you shouldn't have moved to Queens. Cause that's what happens when you move you Queens. (Not that people who don't already live in Brooklyn come here much.)

However, if you do believe that, the flipside is also true; it's a pain in the ass for us Queens people to get where you are.

Right. But the whole point is I'm not arguing for people to come to Bushwick. Because that would be stupid.

People NEVER come to Queens
It ain't just a Queens thing, NYers in general are bad about this. I can't remember the last time someone visited me in Bushwick. I guess it helps to have more than 3 friends though. Boofuckinhoo. So yeah, I'm leaning towards coming.

It's sort of an unwritten rule that the further you are from Manhattan, you will commute towards it, as opposed to vice versa. Whenever I mention the opposite, the reaction is always sort of "huh, that's cute...seriously." The exceptions are Rock-n-Rollerskating and the week or so after 9/11, when Manhattanites decided, "hey, I've never been to (insert outer borough)." Williamsburg doesn't even count anymore, IMH3FO.

Two things:

(1) the one meetup we had last year in Queens was fine and well attended.

People will complain regardless. You just factor that into any planning you make. But anyone kvetching that Queens is some verboten DMZ to everyone else is just shooting their mouth off.

(2) I can't make it next weekend. I have plans I can't get out of. I'd like to meet the "special guest" and all, but unless this person is around the night before and is willing to maybe grab a quick drink (hint, hint), I'm out. Sorry.
