Because what Metafilter really needs more of, is self-appointed arbiters of good taste who can tell us plebs what the 'Best Of The Web' actually is.

A shame P_G's thread was posted yesterday.

P_G's thread ? I don't see one from yesterday.
posted by yhbc at 6:04 AM on August 1, 2005

P_G made an FPP mocking Shouting's dead wife, followed by a MeTa thread which was also deleted. If that isn't grounds for permabannation, I don't know what is.

Well said.

I'm not sure why the Pretty_Generic post was brought up here..
I'd just like to thank anastasiav again for this gesture. Stirring up people to bring good links to the table is what it's all about. And OmieWise, yeah, there's some choice stuff already.
posted by peacay at 7:14 AM on August 1, 2005

Yeah, Worst Of The Web, and us.

Well, yes, it was, but... It's not so cut and dried. In the now deleted MetaTalk thread, Shouting, in his melt down at the end of the thread, was the first to raise the topic of mocking his dead wife first and more than once at that--as if he were daring anyone to do something he could interpet as an attack on his wife. Pretty_Generic, intentionally or not, rose to the bait by linking to to a clip of Shouting and his wife singing thereafter. The MetaTalk thread piling on Shouting and the Shouting's dare at the end came first. Pretty_Generic's link of the clip came second.

And, upon review, what peacay said.

Seems pretty cut and dried from here. Permabannate the fat phuck.
posted by the cuban at 7:43 AM on August 1, 2005

y2karl once again brings us the story behind the story. Pretty_Generic is a valued member of this community who has made more contributions than most, and should be treated with some lenience.

Now back on topic, I think this is a great contest, and I'm really looking forward to today's links.
posted by grouse at 7:47 AM on August 1, 2005

P_G is a man of excellent merits, but he did go just a little crazy last night. Not just with the link but with all of his "emitting-a-loud-cry"-related comments.
By his complete silence today, he may be too embarrassed to say hello (which is unlikely) or Matt's letting the steam out for a while. I look forward to his return, because although his contribution to last night was spectacular in it's lack of humanity, it was also a bizarre aberration.

peacay: I mentioned it in this thread as an intentional side-pot because it was a staggering post, albeit in the worst possible way, and also because the thread is somewhat pointless anyway. I look forward to any serious attempts on the summit, but this page isn't going to sway anyone of significance.

karl, the original Shouting-troll MetaTalk thread wasn't deleted.

(Dunno if you were addressing me, or y2karl).

In any case, right after P_G's deadwife-mocking FPP, Rothko started a MeTa thread acknowledging P_G had gone way over the line, but that thread was mysteriously deleted within ten minutes. I think you thought I was referring to the other mega-MeTa thread about Shouting's trolling.

And....great idea anastasiav!
posted by dhoyt at 9:02 AM on August 1, 2005

Once a while back when I was wayyy too into MetaTalk and bitching it up beyond even my own tolerance levels, I imposed a cooling off period on myself of one week where I was not allowed to visit MeTa, and where I had to post to the Blue every day. It was a good exercise to remind myself that Blue is the most important color here. I think this contest is in that same spirit.

Well, OK then:

Who will be the first to post a vicious, racist remark about my deceased wife?

That's about the only question now, isn't it?

C'mon vicious children. Show us you worst.

....Shouting, I'd suggest you take a breather and post comments that are on topic and about the topic. And to everyone else, I'd ask you to do the same. There's no reason to mock or provoke other users on the site.

Professor of the Blues "Shouting Thomas" and his late wife Myrna are Wild About That Thing![Flash]
posted by Pretty_Generic at 3:09 PM PST

Was P_G.s intent to mock Shouting, self described as 'The Professor Of The Blues' by linking to a video music clip of less than stellar quality ? That seems clear. Was it tacky to post the clip ? God, yes. Was it intended to be first and foremost to an attack on his wife ? That is not clear at all. To claim so is to read much into very liittle and assume the very worst of P_G.

P_G's post's thread was closed by Matt around 4 PM with the comment 'It Ends Here'. Ah, if only...

Shall we post comments that are on topic and about the topic as much as possible in threads gray or blue from now on, then ? Well, I'll certainly try to do my part.

dhoyt : "that thread was mysteriously deleted within ten minutes"

You have a low threshold for "mystery".

My contribution in that thread was deleted by the Gods, then the thread was deleted by the Gods. Double-damnation! I'd post my original comment here, but I know it would just be deleted again. I bet jessamyn didn't even get the joke.

I'm not going to get into another rabbit-torture-scale debate about this, but I think you may find yourself in the minority on this opinion, and the fact that threads were deleted doesn't help this position, either.

posted by amberglow at 11:10 AM on August 1, 2005

I gotta say amberglow... you're the biggest tattle-tale, whining little spineless, thin-skinned pussy of the whole lot. You take every opportunity to scramble into a thread just to report to everyone what someone else is saying to you in another thread. You're pathetic and I don't have any problem saying so... name-calling, etc. be damned. How do you manage to be involved in so many cases that result in the OTHER "guy" getting a timeout (assuming Shouting really has been given a timeout)? You are so babied around here. You're disgusting. /re-un-derail

How about I recite some selections from Vogon Poetry?

Oh freddled gruntbuggly,
Thy micturations are to me
As plurdled gabbleblotchits
On a lurgid bee.
Groop, I implore thee, my foonting turlingdromes
And hooptiously drangle me
with crinkly bindlewurdles,
Or I will rend thee in the gobberwarts with my blurglecruncheon
See if I don't.

Rothko, if I had to be perfectly consistent, I'd have to lose just about everyone that begins their comment with "oh dios, you..." and "Paris, you are such a..." which IIRC, would include bannation for quite a number of folks (you included).

I'd like it if all comments posted to metafilter were about topics, and not people. That's where Shouting has gone way wrong, by using his last comments to just unload on another user.

I'd rather this whole ugly episode went away and we could get back on track (this metatalk post is horribly worded, with a troll/shouting rider tacked on): Today is the best of the web day, and the posts are fantastic.

Necker: shouldn't you take that to MeT- ah never mind.

What I find more interesting that the, well, interesting links today are the few usual newsfilter ones. They stick out like a [cliche] and I hope that's a trend that continues.
