Ask MetaFilter etiquette - timeframe of questions August 10, 2005 11:36 AM Subscribe
Ask MetaFilter etiquette: I've got a ton of built-up questions and only found MeFi a couple months ago. Is it ok to post weekly (as often as I'm technically allowed), or should I give the space/attention to others with perhaps more immediately vital questions?
Make sure you scour the archives for answers before you post a question. You'll save yourself and everyone else time. It seems to me I'm seeing more and more dupes these days.

Also, there are likely to be other places you could ask some of them. If you have that many questions, you could try asking some on topic-specific sites and bring the ones you couldn't get answered to AskMe. Just a suggestion.

Post as often as you need. I bet your questions are more worthy than some that are asked.
I have a stack of unanswered questions, but before I ask any of them I have to make sure that I've searched for answers, checked any other more specific fora, etc. This takes a while, and usually keeps me from asking weekly questions.

If you were supposed to wait longer than a week, the posting restriction would last longer than a week.

Thanks all, that gives me the answers I need.
I will:
- Search to see if they've been asked before or are better answered elsewhere
- Ask the most important questions first
- Not worry about my questions being just a week apart
Cheers!

Also, be aware that if you ask what you should do while visiting New York I will murder you.

Huh. I remember when "get murdered" was one of the things to do while visiting New York.

Yunno, Optimus... You and me have had our differences, but word boogie. Unless you are forced to (or visiting family), don't go to New York on a trip. Go somewhere awesome. Maybe it's just the New Yorker in me, saying that. What a shitehole this place is. I see tourists here and I just think, man those bootleggers on Canal street got it twisted, they should be selling this shit wherever these dudes are from. Actually I gotta run to askme and ask why it is that people go to New York City on vacation. 'Scuse me.
Kickstart70:
Just give back and you can ask up to the one a week limit with no feelings of guilt.

I think the Primester was referring to the fact that the question has been asked about a hundred times.

I was wondering. . .
I am about to go on my first trip to "New York," but I have no idea what to do when I get there. Any suggestions (note: I don't like eating out, or taking in any entertainment. Also, I hate crowds, and I don't want to see any tourist type attractions. Also, any suggestions must be pro-vegan, pro-feminist, gay friendly and it must be something I can do on a budget of $10 dollars a day).

Post as often as you can, that's what the limit is for. Also, Yahoo is seeming to have a better archive of AskMe questions than Google does, so if you want to be extra-careful, you can search there too. I am going to NY over Labor Day, Optimus Chyme, will you murder me?

Divine_Wino: I think they must not be getting their annual quota of getting yelled at...so they come to NY and act like fucktards...

That sounds like something out of the world's worst Valentine.

I can think of worse. Don't tempt or prod me. It'll be messy.

I know, but in asking the question, people are trying to end up in New York. Unless you are visiting friends or family, I just see no good reason to come here. It's like taking the family to the cooling pond for a nuclear power plant when you could go the ocean instead.

Divine_Wino, are you trying to take over Faze's position as Boring I-Hate-NY Guy? Because I don't really see the point.

No no no, I love New York, have lived here my whole life and despite several lives elsewhere, keep coming back. I must just have the summertime in the city blahs, too much grit. Most of my metafilter foolishness comes out when I try to have a conversation with myself, rather than with others. Which is what was happening here.

I read "Primester" as phologically similar to "trimester" and just about peed my pants.

D_W: That's cool, all true New Yorkers occasionally hate the place. Especially in the summer. I may just be oversensitive because I'm in exile in the country. Trees... too many trees...
