NYC Meetup?

I know there was one recently but maybe you would be up for helping a girl out? The thing is...I am lonely. I moved here in July. I've gone out. Explored. Museumed. Ate. Shopped. Drank. Ate. Drank. Ate. Almost been killed on the subway about half a dozen times. Explored some more. Seen lots and lots of rats and even more rodents.

The thing is...I love the city but I am just miserable and heading into these winter months makes it even more dreadful. So, anyone up for a drink and some decent conversation?

And I will travel for good company. FWIW, I live in Morningside Heights. I think there was some talk about meeting up on the West Side???? Again, open for anything!
posted by Lola_G at 10:48 AM on November 8, 2005

I've lived here almost a decade (and been on MeFi since 2000), but I've never been to a meetup. If it's at a time I can go, I'm in.

Give my regards to sugarhill if you're near , the meetups are great.

I also moved here in July and am also miserable! Though, the subway has not made any attempts on my life.

Anyway, I'd be up for it. I live near Union Square, but will go anywhere in Manhattan.

Okay, if you are game please indicate a time preference and area. i.e., weeknight v. weekend? Happy Hour? Neighborhood?

Are we talking next week or few weeks out?
posted by Lola_G at 11:16 AM on November 8, 2005

Let's go out this weekend! I'm game for whatever. How about drinking in some bar in the early hours on Saturday evening?

That sounds perfect. Any suggestions on a place?

I am so bad at picking bars (I never go to them). What if we went somewhere that had foods to, and then people could eat or drink? Some place like the Heartland Brewery in Union Square?
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 11:40 AM on November 8, 2005 [1 favorite]

I also moved to NYC in July and am also miserable! I'd be up for it.

I live near Union Square, but I'll go anywhere in Manhattan.
posted by mullacc at 11:40 AM on November 8, 2005

How about one of these places? 5Ninth seems cool. But Heartland Brewery is absurdly convenient for me, so that works for me too.
posted by mullacc at 11:48 AM on November 8, 2005

Okay, ThePinkSuperhero & Mullacc are in. Grumblebee, maybe. ThePinkSuperhero has suggested Heartland Brewery in Union Square which I am up for because I essentially know three bars in Manhattan...two of which are in Morningside Heights.

I'm so clueless, I don't even know the "sugarhill" reference. So, if there are other suggestions that will bring out more people for merry fun throw them out there. I have a feeling TPS (hope you don't mind the abbreviation) won't be upset.

(Having trouble posting but any of the places mullacc suggested are great too. We need a more seasoned New Yorker to tell us how much our places suck to really get this thread going!)
posted by Lola_G at 11:52 AM on November 8, 2005

I certainly won't be upset, as I'm always up for trying cool new places. But can we go somewhere with food? I like food.

(But abbreviations? Please!)
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 11:58 AM on November 8, 2005 [1 favorite]

I'll come if it isn't Friday....(West side would rock)

(Last time I was at heartland brewery, it seemed to be all frat boys. feh.)

I keep passing a place on 10th at 46th that looks cool - Rufus Lounge. Anyone know it?
posted by CunningLinguist at 12:01 PM on November 8, 2005

I'm in. But I don't go above 60th on the West Side because I hate it up there.
posted by dame at 12:02 PM on November 8, 2005

Saturday? You bet. (missed that earlier)
posted by CunningLinguist at 12:04 PM on November 8, 2005

AMEN dame. Let's keep it somewhere somewhat central, yes?
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 12:06 PM on November 8, 2005 [1 favorite]

If we do it Saturday, can we start early, like 6? I have other drinking plans, but I'd like to say hi. Also, Heartland Brewery is appalling.
posted by dame at 12:14 PM on November 8, 2005

I am aware of my uncoolness, thank you, dame. Some people can overcome it and like me anyway, but the army is small....
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 12:16 PM on November 8, 2005 [1 favorite]

I thought I remembered something about you loathing the abbreviations. My sincerest apologies. (And I am quite confident the army isn't small ThePinkSuperhero).

Okay, consensus so far. Somewhere, around six on this coming Saturday.

West side below 60. (Up where I am at 125 it isn't loathesome or cool but there are only about two places to go!)

What about the "Blue Mill" as suggested in the Manhattan bar thread?
posted by Lola_G at 12:24 PM on November 8, 2005

ThePinkSuperhero: I think I'm beginning to prefer Heartland Brewery if only for the contrarian in me.
posted by mullacc at 12:25 PM on November 8, 2005

I say you pick Lola_G. Trying to get this many people to agree to something is like trying to get 20 elephants to dance a kick line.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 12:26 PM on November 8, 2005 [1 favorite]

Well, here is the thing...I am only armed with limited knowledge and google. My hopes is that the ambience will only supplement the company. Those who wish to nosh can nosh. Those who wish to sit can sit. Those who wish to pay less than a mortgage for a drink can do so.

I want to meet people and that a place be conducive to conversation is key to me. But I am the one without friends so I can't start in on the coolness factor of places named as I am both clueless and uncool!
posted by Lola_G at 12:41 PM on November 8, 2005

yeah, third the Heartland Brew place kinda sucking. They do have decent beers though. Actually it seems anywhere new Union Sq. would kinda blow. But don't listen to me - I don't think I'll be able to make it anyway - I've got a date...with Bauhaus.

Sorry ThePinkSuperhero, I know I wasn't much help...but I am thinking. The only places I can think of on the west side are Passerby, Siberia, Bellevue, and Rudy's, none of which I think will work. There's lots of cool hotels in Hell's Kitchen(?)...If there was a bar called The Ironic Mustache in Manhattan, I think that'd pretty much settle it. Oh well.

The Heartland Brewery is a chain and it definitely sucks. The Peculier Pub in the Village is much better. Revival, on 15th Street near Union Square, is also very good - probably quieter than the Peculier.

I just think Heartland is lame.

The place itself has a lame atmosphere to hang out in. The Apricot Ale is actually quite tasty. They gave it to me in a "growler" jug that I got to keep and now use to hold change.

This is a bit in the future, but I am planning an NYC expedition in December to see the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe with some NYC-located friends. I'd be glad to have MeFites along as well. (Looking at the calendar, would probably be the 10th, with the night of the 9th or the afternoon of the 11th as lesser possibilities).

It's like 15-20 minutes by subway, tops, grumblebee. I expect to see you there!
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 10:45 AM on November 9, 2005 [1 favorite]

Okay, I'm in -- and I'm gonna bring a special friend, too. But, um, where is Revival?

(I'm old before my time and get an instant headache in a loud bar. I'm also a little deaf in one ear, and I can't understand what people are saying if there's loud music playing. And I have no ability to read lips. Boy, I sound pathetic. Anyway, I used to put up with load bars, anyway, and I would just smile, nod and say "uh-huh," even though I couldn't understand what anyone was saying. But I'm turning 40 next Wednesday, and I've decided that I'm old enough to say "no" to loud bars. I'm assuming, since Lola_G shares my liking for conversation, that Revival isn't a loud bar. But if it is, please don't take it personally if I stop by, say hi, smile and nod for a few minutes, and then leave. It's the music-volume, not the company.)

It's unclear whether or not I'll make it, but I've recorded the details of the event in a little black book that sometimes has the power to direct my adventures for the day.
