Abbreviations are somewhat nebulous- if you post a reply in a thread to "Pink", are you talking to me, or to PinkStainlessTail? Tough to say. Plus, I find abbreviations just plain annoying. My name isn't TPS, PSH, or Pink- it's ThePinkSuperhero. It's like writing "gr8" when you mean "great". Surely someone else feels my (minor) pain on this one? And even if you don't, could you spare the extra .25 seconds to type out full usernames, just because I'm such a nice girl? :-D
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 2:16 PM on March 2, 2005 [1 favorite]

But your name doesn't parse:

"You know ThePinkSuperhero, I think you are wrong."

The "The" doesn't fit there, really. And some people have very long names - too much to type! Though I am more-or-less with you on gr8, u, l8r, etc.

Maybe I'm just deathly scared of posting in error, but I like to be aware of the conversation in which I'm participating. This usually leads to an awareness of who is involved, which leads to me noticing the potential for confusion and making sure my names aren't ambiguous.

I also tend to quote liberally to avoid confusion. But that's me.

I'm definitely with you on using actual English. However, the process of truncating names into shorter referents ispart of common English usage.

I noticed that you mentioned you 'grew up with the internet'. I'm surprised, then, that you wouldn't know how much easier it is to use a shorter handle.

In college I played a MUD for a brief while. My first bright idea for a character name was "Michaelina". I took enough heat for that (you don't want to be trying to type that out when a slathering orc is about to slaughter your team) to ensure that all future names would be simple. If someone wants to abbreviate it further, they're welcome to. I guess I'll be glad that they've noticed my comment at all.
posted by Miko at 2:24 PM on March 2, 2005

if you post a reply in a thread to "Pink", are you talking to me, or to PinkStainlessTail?

If the tone of the reply is fawning and respectful, they're talking to me.

Seriously, your example is a rare instance (though I suppose there might have been "Crunch" examples that confused messieurs -land and -burger)and we sorta brought shortening on ourselves by choosing long usernames.

Also, I find that when you're directly responding to another comment it's always worth quoting some or all of it in your reply, so it's clear who you're talking to (like I did above).
posted by PinkStainlessTail at 2:27 PM on March 2, 2005

It's up to the person being abbreviated to take offense, or not. If they take offense, they're entirely capable of defending themselves without your help. If they don't, it's not your place to take offense in their stead. In the unlikely event that there's actual confusion in a thread, it's still up to someone being misquoted or ambiguously quoted to fix it if they care, and if they don't that's not your business. If you're confused by a reference, ask who it refers to.
posted by ROU_Xenophobe at 2:31 PM on March 2, 2005

I like abbreviated versions of my username. Feel free to address me as "Mayor" or "MC" or "Fuck you, Curley!" if you're disagreeing with me.

Perference for full usernames is, apparently, like your attitude towards your real first name-- I'm a William who prefers "Bill", but I've met a few Williams who insisted on "William." Oddly, they were both gay (really).

So the topic is really "ThePinkSuperhero" doesn't like being addressed in the diminutive.

It is with some trepidation that I actually make this comment. After a brief sojourn through the cumulative indexes that make up this small piece of internet real estate called MetaTalk, I have noticed that on occasion, people will complain about the comparative laxity of spelling, punctuation and other syntactic neccesities. It would appear, ThePinkSuperhero, that your desire for people to use a full and unabridged nominative expression is indicative of this kind of complaint.

How I agree with you. There is a lacksidasical approach to formative expression on this site that I find disagreeable. Why, when I was a small boy, such contractions (or, if I may use the more vulgar expression - shortcuts) were punished with the removal of our right to attend after-school Latin classes. You can be sure that after missing a couple of these classes, even the laziest boys would stop their wayward ways and start speaking in a more pleasing manner.

I suggest that the user that calls himself Mathowie should start to implement a similar approach.

Yours Faithfully,

TPS, that reminds me of one time in high school, where my friend Cathy said "I hate my name." I tried to cheer her up, saying, "Catherine's a great name", to which she responded "You're right, it is, but my name's not Catherine, it's Cathy. That's what it says on my birth certificate."

Personally, I have no problem with shortening, and "don't capitalize my name" nazis really bug me, but I am in turn bugged by people who think my name is "bugbear", not "bugbread".

ThePinkSuperhero, I can relate somewhat. I'm not Julia, Julianne, Juliet, or anything else; every piece of ID I own says Julie, as does my birth certificate. I have had to whip out a driver's license to stop people from calling me something I am not. I like the Spanish pronunciation of 'Wholia,' though, and I never correct that when I get it. (Should've used that as a name somewhere, damnit.)

I like being an acronym here. The idea of being called CyanMagentaYellowblacK hurts my brain.

For myself, I've almost never had a person type out all of shmegegge. especially not in game, etc... where you have to type quickly and get back to killing. too many repeating letters and interchanging combinations thereof. I just learned to accept that I'll be referred to as smeg (an abbreviated version of the word for the fluid within the scrotum.) more often than not. Just doesn't seem that big a deal to me. Hearing it pronounced on Xbox Live is hysterical, by the way. "Sme- Smuh... Shmegeg-... Fuck it."

But that's me. If someone asked me to type their whole name out when referring to them, it's certainly not too big a deal to do it. Maybe it didn't need its own MeTa thread, but there are worse offenses to make.

Usually, I'm just "squirrel"... but, uhh... that was taken by someone who shall remain nameless.

I dunno why, but I laughed harder at that than anything else I've seen all day.

All the people who said "if you don't want your name abbreviated, you shoulda picked a shorter username" are exactly right. But I think we'll all know to be extra careful about one name in particular. Personally, I plan to only ever use the appellation "The. Pink. Super. Hero."

Oh, and one more thing:

IKO, IKO!

I hate it when people don't pronounce my name with the iambi it deserves. And you should be smoking as you do so.

[NitpickFilter] robocop is bleeding, just for reference, the plural of iamb is iambs. Furthermore, since the stresses in your name begin on the first syllable and not the second, it would be composed of trochaic feet, not iambic feet. Hence, it would be pronounced ROboCOP is BLEEding. Unless, of course, you mean that you'd rather it be pronounced roBO cop IS bleeDING. That would sound strange, though. The problem is easily rectified, however! Simply rename yourself, "The Robocop is bleeding, here!" and you're all set. Additionally, you may rename yourself "The Robocop is bleeding, here, you know!" to have a name consisting of one full line of iambic pentameter. [/NitpickFilter]

I heart this thread. Must bookmark for future use if I want to annoy someone, or avoid it. ;)

Never had a problem with names, because I'm supremely lazy and copy-paste, thus avoiding capitalizing when I shouldn't or misspelling. Long names with spaces in them don't fit very well in sentences though, turtles all the way down can really throw the grammar out of whack, but since mine is terrible anyway it make little difference.

I don't recall anyone here at mefi messing up my eight char name. So, uh, thanks! I really don't know how people manage but at my own corner of the web people manage to email me with "Dear Mr. Da Bitch" all the time, search me where they get that idea. Annoying.

In meatspace people always want to add extra syllables on my name. It's Åsk. Just Åsk. They repeat as they're still shaking my hand "Åskiii?". No, it's just Åsk. Then a twenty minute conversation about my name ensues, ensuring that I never remember anyone elses, which is a little embarrassing.

I always try to use the full username whenever I reply to someone, unless they say otherwise, because I assume that the name they chose is the name they chose and if they wanted a nickname to be used, they would have chosen that nickname as the name they chose. Even if it's a long name, I don't mind taking a few additional seconds to either type or cut and paste it. Having said that, I'm not surprised that most people want to abbreviate a long name, since that's what most people do in real life, even if they don't have the permission of the owner of the name. So, even though I personally could care less what people use to refer to me, I understand your position ThePinkSuperhero, and agree that consideration should be given to a person's nomenclature preference. I do think some of the hostility in this thread may be due to the perception that you masked your personal preference by requesting it as a group preference. But, regardless of the responses in this thread, I'm sure the majority of MetaFilter members will respect your wishes regarding your username.

And speaking of plurals and i_cola, did you know that "cola" is plural for colon?

Thank God I am not Orange Life of Gravy.

I'll be big about this and not take it personally:-)

I don't mind having my username shortened or punned upon. I can't understand why anyone would - they're just silly names we gave ourselves. It's only a problem when it becomes a matter of confusing members. Hmm, let's see, I've gotten OS, Swan, Miss Swan, Swannie, and my favourite, "the citrus waterfowl". All good, although the OS always makes me think of the computer term.

ex, lotus, exlotus, whatever.

I tend to use bold tags around user names to make it easier for them to spot whatever comment I direct to them. If I'm just making a comment, chances are good that I'll truncate. If I'm quoting, I'm likely cutting-and-pasting, so you'll get the full nickname.

But really, if you have a username that's more than, say, 10 characters, you made your own bed, and you should fully expect to lie in it.

oh, and hi to the Mandy's. :p

I know that Wulfgar! hates being called Wulfy,

That's not so true. I hate being called "Wulfy" derisively. But as a familiar greeting, it ain't so bad. That might be part of what others react to most around here, is when a nick is altered for insult as opposed to reference, bonding or brevity.

Feel free to drop the "!" if it suits your fancy, but it's just unseemly when people drop the "f". "Wulgar" just reads ... ugly. For that reason, "Wulf" might be better, because no one would be prone to typing "Wul".

Incidentally, Jessamyn, I have loved your name since I first read the works of Jessamyn West, the Quaker novelist, in high school - I even chose to name the main character of the novel I'm writing "Jessamyn". I'm almost certain that I stumbled across your website when googling the author long before I ever heard of Metafilter (didn't you have a web site about her?).

I always thought it was kind of a cool coincidence to run into you again on MeFi...

Dearest Great and Golden Swan (with the deep, deep coppertone tan):

My only reason for saying what I did was because your moniker came up recently in meat space. My husband is looking for a new user name for his mountain bike boards and I was telling him which ones I liked on Metafilter but cautioned "Whatever you do, don't use the word Orange-- it is strangely popular and leads to mix-ups." A quick search shows:

There were 40 results for "orange" in the following user accounts

FFF, 3F, F3; they all work well, too. Triple-F, sure, though I've never seen it before. "even FFFish" is surprising, but consider the source.

The name came to me in 1986ish at around midnight, as I was peering into the refrigerator looking for something snacky. As the fridge light came on, it was as if the finger of God came down and stirred my brains: 'Five Fresh Fish' leapt into my consciousness, and so it has been ever since.

I find it a little eerie that the bible story involves five fish, that FFF = 666, and that Monty Python had five fish in the tank, and was searching for them in the middle of the film.

Good gravy! Although very few of those 40 users actually have the word "orange" in their usernames - at most it's usually just part of their website URLs or email addresses.

But yeah, if I'd realized that it was so popular, I would have gone with something else.

madam, juju, mjjj, madamj, jujube, jivelady, hey you or Jane You Ignorant Slut are all ok with me. Or pretty much any variations thereon.

There is another juju, a jujube and a givemejujubes but so far we haven't been bumping into each other.

In real life, I had a heart-stopping name mix up once. I got a call from my gynecologist office asking why I hadn't returned for my treatment for -- get this -- syphilis. My life flashed before my eyes, I could feel blindness and insanity stalking me. Thankfully, it was some other poor woman with the exact same name - a not particularly common one - but a different birthdate. We never "ran into each other" again, but I have gone through life thinking of her as my doppelganger, an unfortunate soul who absorbs all the bad energy that might have landed on me.
