The Jesse Helms, if you're using FireFox you can disable images that aren't from the originating site (i.e. posted in threads).
Go to Tools --> Options --> Content --> Show images --> select from Originating Site Only.
Or unclick the show images checkbox.
Problem solved.
But I'd just as soon people stopped with alot of the inline image posting. At least we don't have the ridiculous sig file crap as on other sites.

I'm thinking that if were doing some kind of report on I dunno let's say 'tap dancing indonesian whores wearing meat helmets' and was having trouble finding images, I could post a metatalk thread that said "Stop posting imagins of tap dancing indonesian whores wearing meat helmets' and withing an hour I'd have all the images I'd need.
So...please stop posting images of tap dancing indonesian whores wearing meat helmets.

fenriq: The Jesse Helms, if you're using FireFox you can disable images that aren't from the originating site (i.e. posted in threads). Not really. The animal shitting/pissing images, all the gratuitously gross stuff -- it's posted out of aggression. It's roughly the equivalent of doing a pantomime of someone. Hiding the aggression from yourself does not make it go away, nor does it stop that aggression from poisoning the atmosphere.
...
Problem solved.
Oh, and: Class clowns are grossly over-rated. The only qualitative difference between clowns and trolls is that one's less attractive than the other.
posted by lodurr at 11:28 AM on December 24, 2005
Lodurr, if the pics offend you, disable the images. I think poop pictures are a fairly innocuous method of displaying aggression, assuming your point is correct.
As you said, hiding the aggression does not make it go away-but neither does refraining from posting poop pics. Aggression is a part of modern life online as well as off, and if you truly cannot deal with it perhaps it is time to turn off the computer and have a cup of tea or a walk.
There will always be something here that annoys someone. An annoyance free site would be a site that does not exist. And then probably someone would be annoyed about that as well.

The pics don't offend me. They have no affect on me, as pictures.
But I recognize them for what they are: The equivalent of schoolyard taunting. Both functionally and intellectually.
I'm simply suggesting that complaining about the level of discourse on metafilter is inconsistent with a poo-poo attitudet toward poop shots: If folks want less hostility around here, they should stop rewarding the class clowns for their scatological forays.

Lord knows there's lots of "pseudo-intellectual" crap thrown around this place, but konolia's comment isn't an example. Seems to me that her comment is just a pragmatic observation. It's fault, if it has one, is that it's a truism.
But also, I have a theory that, mostly, the only people who accuse other people of "pseudo-intellectualism" are knownothings and not, as they claim, the type of person equipped to discern pseudo-bullshit from the real thing. You may be an exception.

EB, put some batteries in your jokemeter, hon. He was making a funny.
It always cracks me up when people complain about things that are simply part of human nature. When large or small groups of humans associate over a long period of time, there will always be the annoying, and there will always be the annoyed.
As much as some want an elevated discourse, the fact that this is a public, (semi) anonymous forum pretty much assures that that ain't gonna happen. A literary salon Mefi ain't. I think the frustration arises when people's expectations outstrip what it's possible for this place to be.

I didn't see it that way. I thought it was her opinion, and it's generally consistent with her other opinions, so it seemed fair to me. I just think that we lose sight of the fact that we reward people all the time for behavior that's not qualitatively different from the kind of behavior for which we excoriate people. It's just that somehow, folks seem to think it's different when it's done by some people.

Yep. The fact that every now and then one of those slips through my filters always reminds me that it's an easier mistake to make than one might think and certainly isn't that greatly lindicative of ignorance of correct usage. I really don't know why, exactly, I still make that mistake. Except, as I mention in another thread, I'm now taking opioids regularly and I've noticed a slight increase in typos of a very particular type: incorrect wors that are homonyms of the correct word. And the other day it suddenly occured to me that one thing that might indicate and—even if it does't it's, something that is tue—I'm always "hearing" a subvocalization when I read and when I write. I don't think this is true of everyone and, particularly, I don't think it's true of highly literate people who read and write quickly. That it's true of me, even though I am highly literate and read and write quickly explains quite a bit of question raised by how I read and write.
"OOOOOOOhhh! Oh, how it burns! (Oh, and, pot?....)"
I didn't realize how much my joke implied snark rather than friendly humor. I meant it as a joke I couldn't resist, not as a sincere criticism.
"Seems to me someone needs his fucking humorometer adjusted."
