A. Very lame excuse

B. Making a copy and playing off the burned copy, when the original is installed on another computer, is the definition of piracy.

I'm sure it's legal somewhere.

Burundi, perhaps. Upper Volta, maybe.

Oh choke on a dick. It does not behoove you to hamhandedly attempt to protect the potential copyrights of unknown corporations from possible infringement by mostly anonymous persons on the internet.

"The only traditions of the Royal Navy are rum, sodomy, and the lash."

Not uttered by Winston Churchill—though apparently he kinda wished he had. Uttered it, that is. No idea how he felt about sodomy and the lash. Or charming rogues wearing lots of eyeliner swinging from and riding down things while making unauthorized copies of software. It's a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.

Or as the old naval saying puts it:
"Ashore it's wine, women and song, but afloat it's rum, bum and concertina."

That was my favorite part of the thread as well. Neither comment deserved a favourite, but the pairing of the two did.

Damn, now I regret giving LH a shotgun for Christmas! I thought it would allow him an alternate letting-off-steam route, and quell his need for jackassness in the threads. How wrong I was! It seems to have just multiplied the cranky geezeredness, and made him more fearless in his crotchedyosity!

(OK, let's see how many of them there made-up, but sensicle, words piss him off!)

"Aargh... might be irked! Might!!"

I actually changed that several times from "might" to "may" and back because I couldn't decide which was right.

I blame early-onset Alzheimer's.

So you we all know. In any thread in which LH is likely to show up (ok, any thread) just leave a blank or multiple choice where you are unsure.

Did I tell him HOW to pirate software? If I told you how mp3 ripping and compression works, am I teaching you to pirate music?

I told him how CD Keys work. I even pointed out where it might not work. I didn't point him toward any specific tools or provide any links. His question boiled down to "how do I install something on two machines?" And really, my answer boiled down to "go ahead and try it; I bet it will work."

If that's offsides, mea culpa.

Game licenses generally are for ONE machine, regardless of who owns it. If there's a licensing server involved, it doesn't care who owns the machines, it's going to disable the second copy. By your logic, a mega-corporation could buy 1 copy of MS Office and install it on all of their PC's.

If you're going to be snide, at least be correct.

Might that fall under fair use, though, if you own two machines? Similar to buying the CD and then burning it to your machine for easier listening pleasure. Many games are downloadable "for those having scratched originals" of the disks, as well. (IAAL, BNAIPL)

I've seen some companies explicitly say that something like this is OK if "you're not playing it at the same time on both machines". I've also seen games that let you install the multi-player component on multiple machines (Marathon, maybe?), but you didn't need the CD on those installations.

Any copy protection that relies on remote authorization (basically, any multiplayer game) won't allow this kind of thing- to them, 2 machines in one household look the same as 2 machines in different households.
posted by mkultra at 7:09 AM on January 29, 2007

Oh, but my point in the first paragraph is that most EULAs explicitly state that the license is only valid for one machine.
