What is your favourite mefi thread? March 26, 2002 6:38 PM   Subscribe

Every now and then, I run into an old, really interesting Metafilter thread posted by someone or other on to a current thread. e.g. This posted by nprigoda today has some very interesting links.
I think it would be good to find out some of the most interesting threads from the past. So ....What is your favourite mefi thread? (Since I suspect most people have been bookmarking some of their favs)

I sort of liked this one on the loss of faith.

This one with recipes was good and it has linked to two of my favorites.

I called this one the best thread ever because pretty near everyone on it was articulate, succinct, and wrote outstanding, intelligent comments!

The Joke Thread was a lot of fun for the holidays.

I've been thinking of putting together an annotated guide to some of my favorite threads, the ones I found most useful and most interesting. I have to dig into my "unsorted" bookmarks folder to do it though, and that is a task I might not survive unscathed.

I'll probably never get around to it.

Anyway, I highly recommend using those "one year ago" and "two years ago" links at the top of the sidebar, there have been a lot of good discussions.

This thread still raises the hairs on the back of my neck.

The original 9/11 WTC thread amazes me; I'm amazed anyone was logged in at all. My very first decision that day (not that I had many to make) was "stay off the net." I knew the news sites would be brought to their knees and they'd be way behind TV in breaking the news, and the concurring overload across the net would just make it too damn annoying to even bother trying to get on any other site either, like MeFi. Note that the second plane had already hit before the thread here even got off the ground (no pun intended); by that point I was already juggling phone calls with three other family members in front of the TV, with at least ten times as much information already absorbed.

But then, I guess a lot of people were stuck in office buildings and couldn't get TV or radio access.

(By the way, those of you thinking of dumping landline service and using a cell phone as your only phone, remember the WTC. When the doo-doo hit the fan, cell phone users were screwed, while almost everyone with regular phones continued to have full service throughout the day.)

Regarding the 9/11 thread, I was working and had no access to TVs. Although the major news sites were down due to the heavy traffic, I got all the coverage from the MeFi thread.

I hardly keep threads (only some persistent one, like the 9/11), but I do bookmark many, many links from Mefi into a folder called Mefi. One day, I might sort it in different subfolders and publish it.

Things you'll find there: pong-3d, police sketch software, several flash apps and games, the page that registers all fake bands and artists that appear on movies, the air guitar page, the page with the designs of the equipments of guitar players, the Kevin Bacon oracle (online 6-step) and so on.

I think it would be interesting if some users also did publish their links (in some sorted way).

rexgregbr: I have the same problem. I bookmark all my mefi links, threads in an unsorted mefi folder and now i dread the prospect of sorting them.

Thanks for all the wonderful links.
