Archive.org, Linkrot, and You

PSA: The Internet Archive's Wayback Machine is a fantastic resource for finding preserved copies of broken links from long-lost websites. But did you know you can now have it archive pages on demand -- including copies of all the pages that page links to? [more inside]

Adding archive.org links to old posts

Is it possible and desirable to add Internet Archive links to old posts? [more inside]

Please prioritize original sites and use archive.org not archive.is

Two silly asks of anyone making a post that turn a few recent MeTas on their heads:
1. When linking to paywalled content, please link first to the original content, and make your secondary link to the archived content. While paywalls are frustrating or impossible obstacles for some folks, they do in fact make sure that authors and publishers get paid. Further, official sites are often more navigable and readable than archived HTML scrapes. I’m not saying you shouldn’t provide a free copy, just asking that you prioritize the one that gets the author some compensation.
2. archive.org is a not-for-profit with known ownership. archive.is / archive.today is entirely opaque. Who runs archive.is? How? Why? (It first got famous -in the US- as far as I know, as a way for conservatives to deny advertisers clicks, and then Gamergate and anti-Gamergate made it really blow up.) The Internet Archive has a one-click archiver available at web.archive.org/save. Please consider using it instead.

Impossible. Perhaps the archives are incomplete.

I'd always thought MeFi site searches were pretty much comprehensive, but last night I came across several search terms that were clearly missing content. Has anyone else noticed this behavior in the past, or could this be a new bug? [more inside]

Is there a collection of "This is just to say" poems by MeFites?

I ran into yet another of these in the 2017 post about Truck Nutz, and realized I've been seeing them for years. Didn't see anything about them on the Wiki, but is anyone collecting them somewhere? Obvs. not an easy phrase to search. [more inside]

Recent post on the Blue featuring a home-rolled newspaper archive?

Within the past 60 or 30 days there was a post concerning a *very* idiosyncratic website devoted to archiving small-town newspapers from a local area of the mid-atlantic states, I think in Pennsylvania, which over time has become one of the largest online local-newspaper archives on the web. The site relies on a number of questionable technology decisions and UI implementations, but remains unique. Unfortunately, google and/or site searches for 'newspaper archive' and variants didn't do the trick for me. [more inside]

Featuring MeFi's own MetaFilter

The American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress has announced the creation of the library's Web Cultures Web Archive Collection. Archived sites of note run the gamut from Urban Dictionary to ¡Cuánto cabrón! to creepypasta to MeFi's own Metafilter. [h/t]

Best way to search archives?

Google Seceder

PSA: Google Reader shuts down in two weeks. Several alternatives capable of importing your subscription lists and starred items (exportable via Google Takeout) have popped up since the closure announcement, and that's OK. But there's one highly valuable aspect of Reader nobody can replicate and that will soon be lost forever: Reader's vast archive of cached feed data. Here's how to save it all. [more inside]

San, Toeknee. "Recursive linking in the archive" http://metatalk.metafilter.com/20364/

How big is the entire Metafilter folder / database, if it were an archive quality file? Is there an archive, or plans for long term preservation, or is Archive.org the plan? Yes, I know that it's hard to archive a living thing, but I'm wondering what might be happening to insure preservation. [more inside]

Queries from the hive mind

I was experimenting with Google's search suggestions feature when I noticed that it gave some interesting results for "metafilter + [letter]". Since it returns the most popular search terms starting with that phrase, what you get for each letter is an A-Z listing of the most sought-after topics related to Metafilter. So without further ado, I give you... Metafilter A to Z. [more inside]

Old thread not closed to comments?

I was looking at an old AskMe of mine from 2006, and it doesn't appear to be closed to comments (though I didn't try posting a reply.) The usual "this thread is closed" isn't there - instead, it's the normal reply box. Bug?

Anonymous Ask Metafilter Archive

"Why does eating in a restaurant make me crap my pants?" and 994 other anonymous gems from the Anonymous Ask Metafilter archive. As AskMe readies for it's 1000th anonymous question, the community is hereby polled: How has the feature worked out for the community? Do you ever wonder how some threads were resolved? And at the risk of seeming too voyeuristic, has anyone ever thought about writing fiction based on the scenario in an anonymous AskMe question?

Archiving chosen content from Metafilter?

What methods are available for archiving chosen content from MetaFilter (e.g. your contributions, favourite threads and comments, and so on)? I was thinking about using ScrapBook for Firefox to manually save some stuff. How else might one achieve this though? I ask because a psychic told me MeFi will permanently die this Monday.

sometime in 1999

What happened pre January 28, 2000 that caused all earlier members than 278 to have joined 'sometime in 1999' v 279 (both absolutely useless, by the way) - the MetaTalk archives started March 3, 2000 so there is no obvious record of what happened.

Let OP update closed posts in AskMe

This is perhaps indulgent, but it would be potentially useful in ask.mefi if the instigator of the thread could post just once after the thread has been frozen. Some questions resolve after several months, and it would be a possible benefit for those googling for information to see closure, i.e. "this is what ended up working the best, x was right" or what have you. Perhaps this is just imposing a false narrative closure on messy reality.

taxonomy organization volunteers

As I understand them, Matt's plans for AskMe include some organization of the archives by topic. (I may be wrong about this; if so, stop reading here.) As the archive grows, it becomes a bigger and bigger job going through the individual posts and tagging them with the appropriate (sub)category. So my questions are, first, has any kind of organizing taxonomy been proposed for AskMe, and second, once that's done, would it make sense to organize an effort at distributing the tagging process across willing MeFi volunteers? If so, I volunteer.

new comments in the archives

How hard would it be to keep the "_ new comments" feature when browsing through the archives? I've been close to asking for this feature before but never felt that threads in MT really had a long enough posting life to warrant such a change. With the addition of Ask Metafilter, however, checking the number of new comments in threads even a day old becomes a rigorous exercise in memorization. If it's not too much work, I'd certainly like to see it changed, perhaps in January when everything else is looked at.

Does Matt remove posts from the archives?

Does Matt remove posts from the archives? I've been trying to find a couple of old threads from a few months ago, a link about the whilstler devices that people are putting in the tailpipes of thier cars and an interview with a guy that had one in his car. I've searched thru the archives post by post and used the search but it seems to have disappeared. Is it possible that it has been dumped for some reason? Is this common? I cant even seem to find the post from earlier this month that had the old GI Joe PSA. What's up Matt?

Blog service that lets users participate via email?

I need to pick MeFier's brains and I guess this is the place to do it.
I belong to a mailing list that has an absolutely horrible archive. There's great information in the archive that's next to impossible to dig out.
The solution seems to be to switch to something like a blog. But Movable Type, as far as I can tell, doesn't allow people to participate both on a blog-type page and by email, does it?
Can any MeFiers tell me of a blog-type program that also sends out posts as emails and lets people respond via email?
Thanks in advance for any help and I apologize if this is too off topic.

Link&Think Archive pointing to the wrong year

The Link & Think Archive on MeFi Homepage today points to the 2001 archive - http://www.metafilter.com/linkandthink.mefi. I know we can see 1/12/2002 at http://www.metafilter.com/lofi.mefi. Is this deliberate? Just curious.

Closed thread means not-a-double policy

"Um, isn't this a kinda sorta double-post? [/meanie]"
"This thread is over 30 days old, and has been closed for archival purposes."
So it being a repost is not relevant. I propose a mortatorium on such statements, now that it is hard coded that threads are officially dead after one month. Comments pro & con are welcome herein.

Archives error

I got the following error when trying to view the metatalk archives (OSX, NS7.0b1):

Element METATALK_LAST_VISIT is undefined in SESSION.
The Error Occurred in C:\metafilter sites\metatalk.metafilter.com\archived.mefi: line 40

Then, because I am a supergenius, I thought I'd just check the archives to see if anyone else had reported the problem.

What is your favourite mefi thread?

Every now and then, I run into an old, really interesting Metafilter thread posted by someone or other on to a current thread. e.g. This posted by nprigoda today has some very interesting links.
I think it would be good to find out some of the most interesting threads from the past. So ....What is your favourite mefi thread? (Since I suspect most people have been bookmarking some of their favs)

Archives should also include current month

It would be nice if the archives showed every past month, including all of the posts in the *current* month. Unless I'm missing something, at this point in time, the only way for me to see posts from the beginning of August is for me to change my preferences, and I most definitely don't want to set my preferences to "view last 30 days" just to see posts from the beginning of the month while the next month approaches.

Don't you think? =)
