FPP: Trolling? July 2, 2002 10:54 PM   Subscribe

Trolls disguised as pleas for piss tests? Maybe someone should just ask ponchogaddo to stop pissing all over the threads.

Oh, it looks like mathowie is on top of it... or at least mopping up...

It's enginebeak, by the way. He flipped out a couple months ago, and I banned his account. Looks like he rediscovered an old account tonight and went to town with the piss test garbage.

Just when I was about to ask who he was, you exceed my expectations once again.

Why do people come here to flip out?

Well, I think we can safely agree that MeFi is an acquired taste. And if you don't take the commentary with a rather large bag of salt, it's likely you'll end up with some feeling of resentment toward the community (read some as shitload).

Off the top of my head, I would conclude that when MeFi was originally labelled as intelligent, articulate, and funny, many of the original members should have received kudos. Anymore, as new members arrive, the assumption (I think) is that they're already intelligent, articulate, and funny, and are rather condescending to those who they feel are lesser members.

Tends to be a bunch of over-inflated egos harping at each other, which doesn't make for good, if even civil, conversation. So they flip out. Whoever first said, "It's just a website" deserves a prize.

That would be briank on May 13, 2001, and then again on June 20, 2001.

Thanks iconomy. And apparently, my thoughts aren't very original. From your first link:

but I still think 99% of the problem is the attitude people have here. Your precious community has names you don't recognize, or ideas you don't like, or (heaven forbid!) someone posted a bad link, or even worse stole someone's design and you guys flip out on them.

Lighten up, the world isn't ending because someone is putting their finger in your little virtual honeypot.

"Nice threads, man!"

"Yeah, they were, until somebody pissed all over 'em!"

Thank you. I'd like my prize in cash, small denominations, please.

I don't get that at all. If people are going to get that worked up and defensive over a site like this, then I submit that they have some fairly serious problems that have nothing to do with the site. We're not here to play bumpercars with our egos or to compare penises, in the recently popular metaphor. If someone comes in with that attitude, then I guess they will have problems. If they come looking for a free exchange of views, some healthy debate, and to share something of themselves and learn something from time to time, then they will never have a reason to feel resentment toward anyone (except the occasional out-and-out trolls, who are usually dealt with rather quickly).

Ah, enginebeak. The man behind the rarest of rares: the deleted MetaTalk post. (see also)
