Please tell me that "here's my favorite recipe" FPP's are not going to become a habit.

I just want to say that the annoyance factor isn't real huge or anything, but I thought it was... well, not really what metafilter is supposed to be about.

Maybe my annoyance is heightened by the fact that the recipe in question was done in full in the comments, and not placed on the poster's website and linked to or something.

Anyway, here's one vote hoping we don't see more of the same of this kind of thing.

You got here before me, beth, so this is a much less scathing callout than it might have been. For me, the annoyance factor is huge; this is a deliberately screw-the-rules post by a poster who's been around long enough to know better. Miguel pushes the limits, but at least he has the class to link to "something interesting on the web" before getting to his real goal, which is "what kind of cocktail/biscuit/hotel do you like?" Linking to a promo for
The Joy of Cooking is downright insulting (and the fact that it's the crappy new edition just makes it worse). I hope Matt doesn't spare the thread just because people have put recipes in it. Bad, bad fff!

I disagree. It is a week post, but, for whatever reason, it succeeded in generating good discussion, which, at least to me, makes up (partially) for a weak fpp. Deleting it now would be wasteful.

Posts like this should be nipped in the bud. But once they've grown past that early stage, deleting them is counter-productive. fff does deserve some time in the corner, however, and I trust he won't do it again.
posted by kickingtheground at 10:19 AM on October 12, 2003

My annoyance with the post is that fff used MetaFilter as his own blog. Using a crappy 'The Joy of Cooking' link to fulfill the FPP link guideline and then essentially writing a blog entry in the comments.

Its a self link without the link, I encourage it's deletion.

Oh, it'll never happen again.

One of my fall traditions, before I fall into the dark blue funk of expletive-deleted winter, is to make a whole bunch of pumpkin pies to give away to the people I love. It's my way of saying thanks to those who have supported me through the year.

This year, MetaFilter made the grade. But it's not practical to ship a few hundred pies off to all you great people who make this such a damn fine place.

So the only practical way to share with you was to post the recipe. It's my gift of thanks to MetaFilter, done in the most generous possible spirit.

My hope is that everyone gives the recipe a try. You really can't go very wrong with it. The pie is stunningly delicious. Your friends and family will rave. And yet it's so simple, so easy, so low-key. Well worth the effort.

As for the magnitude of my sin, let's see what else was posted that day:
- ooh, a bucket of water for sale
- esquire magazine stories of limited interest.
- domokun for the umpteenth time.
- mandalas that no one cared about.
- Yet More Arnie, Yawn Sigh.
- what appear to be a half-dozen Bush-bashing stories, how exciting that.
- and so on.

The day had already gone to the dogs. My contribution, if anything, improved the day: it certainly had more responses than most of the other posts. And we now have a nice cranberry recipe. (I just wish we'd ended up with a few more good thanksgiving recipes.)

And now, like little Jack Horner, I'll go sit in my corner.

Enjoy your pies, y'all.

I dunno... I like the occasional recipe thread. They shouldn't be too regular; maybe best as a MeTa thing? The recipe sites online are all crap; a good recipe needs a proper transmission in order to be appreciated. "Jake's Recipe Hullaballoo" isn't really a proper way to look for them, in my opinion. MeFi, on the other hand, is a community I've been (quietly) involved in for a couple of years now, and recipes I see on here do have that community connection that you don't find on a random cooking site.

just my two cents.

Just because you feel that the day's posts have been bad doesn't give you the excuse for you to post a link that you know isn't suitable. And there's already been a thread on MeTa about how number of comments isn't indicative of post quality.

I though five fresh fish's gesture was really nice - his recipe is so tempting I'm sure a lot of us will try it and be grateful - and, although he only provided a fluff link, which is against the guidelines (as no one could deem it interesting), there really was something exceptional and generous about the sentiment. Paradoxically, it was the most unselfish of self-links. The resulting thread was also highly interesting.

I plead it's an exception to the rule and hope Matt doesn't delete it. At least till some of us have tried the recipe. If it stinks, by all means place in a stockade and pelt him with tins of pseudo-pumpkin. :)

We learned how to stay regular, courtesy of Razzle Bathbone's cat. [canned pumpkin, for those who skipped that]

Blame it on whywhywhy666, it started with a recipe for disaster. Not once but twice! Then tempered with Chicken & Goat Cheese Flautas, pleaded to get a rise from the onlookers, to no avail. Some one else thought imitation was a form of flattery and suggested a pie after that meal. Not to be outdone, whywhywhy666 hit us with Garlic Pecan Fried Chicken followed by yet another dessert, Cool Lime Pie with Tequila. It was a Thanksgiving feast!

I think FFF's squash pie recipe is great! It's autumn and time to cocoon! Do all the topics on the FFP have to interest absolutley everyone? Not interested? On your bike then.

Everything is up for discussion, except whatever is on sale at eBay, unless it's water and Madonna bathed in it, at least!

Time to throw some of those rules out, I say [except the double post ones!] HA!

What's with the running to MeTa over every single thing? Too many cry babies. Have a cigar.

i_cola, I think fff meant it tongue in cheek, it's a long weekend in some places, so not everyone's at work where they can post to the front page to their hearts content.

Don't deny some dogs the pleasure.

That word community is a steaming legless statement. Sounds exclusionary and too much "not in my backyard" like.

I'd bet there are many in this "community" that don't dare post anything they may be interested in for fear of getting sniped. Then y'all scratch your heads wondering where everyone is and why the same handful post.

Here's an example of how insular this "community" has gotten: I objected to a racist word used. Some of this "community" thought they would "contribute" their opinion. This is called contributing to a discussion? I don't know where anyone would tolerate that kind of "behavior".

Dhoyt's Hot Dog Casserole:

1 pkg. hot dogs
1 cup elbow macaroni
1 pkg. Cracker Barrel sharp white cheddar cheese, cubed
2 16-oz. cans tomato sauce
Salt and pepper (to taste)
1 pkg. hot dogs

Cook macaroni in a saucepan according to directions. At same time, slice hot dogs into "coins" about 1/4-inch thick. Brown in a skillet. In large casserole dish, combine cooked macaroni, hot dogs, cheese and tomato sauce. Mix together, adding milk until desired consistency. Add salt and pepper to taste. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes, until cheese is melted and hot dogs are hot!

No, it's not. That's why that thread last year was deleted when some guy linked to a Green Day site and asked for help because his daughter was doing drugs. I love a good discussion as much as the next guy/gal, but there has to be some ground rules here, and posting a link that has more than a marginal connection with what you want to discuss is a fair one.

Listen up, whiners:

Do I make a habit of posting rule-breaking FPPs? No. Am I likely to post more rule-breaking FPPs? No.

Here's an idea: knowing that you were breaking the rules, and doing it anyway, does not make it better; it might, in fact, make it worse. Perhaps you did it as a nice gesture, as you claim, or perhaps you did it because you like the attention (I happen to believe you, myself, but I don't care much one way or the other). Matt has obviously decided to leave the post up, so I suggest you should be the one who shuts up for awhile, because your continued poor form (the gall of people questioning a poorly-exectued fpp!) is off-putting.

An overly retentive crowd who probably have something against Thanksgiving and its meaning. Must really hate their relatives they are forced to spend time with.

If I had anything against Thanksgiving it would be the celebration of genocide and the senseless slaughtering of turkeys who spent their entires lives in small cages, lined up by the thousands in brightly lit warehouses. I happen to enjoy a good meal, however (and a good pumpkin pie, no less). Much like FFF, your attitude in this thread is combative, simply, it seems, because you started a MetaTalk thread and people didn't agree with you (what was that about being "too much 'not in my backyard' like"?). MetaFillet Mignon:
1 MetaFilter member
1/2 tsp. salt
ground pepper to taste

Skewer MetaFilter member and chew out backside. Stab in back to remove the tenderloins along either side of spine (unless member is spineless, in which case the tenderloins are probably underdeveloped anyway). Trim fat and connective tissue away and cut into MetaFillets roughly baseball-sized. Season and let rest in the refrigerator for 8-12 hours, longer if you'd like.

When ready, pull MetaFillets out of the fridge and let them come up to room temperature. Preheat your broiler, pat your MetaFillets dry with a paper towel and brush them with a little olive oil to prevent sticking, then place on the broiling pan for 3 minutes on either side for rare, 5-7 minutes for medium. If you prefer your MetaFillets well-done, return them to broiler or fry in MetaTalk until charred crisp.

Serve with G&Ts and pancakes.

There's a contingent of self-important rule-obsessed fanatics who get their knickers in a knot on a damn near daily basis. MetaTalk is choc-a-bloc full of idiotic whinging about the tragedy of FPPs. It's like a preschool in here, with tattle-tales trying to trump up their toddler ego by being teacher's pet.

I've posted four FPPs in two years. I am unlikely to post another FPP in quite some time. Do you really think this dogpile is going accomplish a damn thing? In a nutshell: not fucking likely.

I think this thread, and most of the other FPP-whinging threads, have very little indeed to do with the quality, quantity, or regulation of FPPs, and very much to do with a small group of ass-widgets who thrill to the sensation of power and righteousness.

A good community is not created by bringing out the rocket launchers whenever a neighbour plants the "wrong" colour of flowers or parks their car on the "wrong" side of the street. A good community is created when most people make an effort to do good things for the community.

Go spend your energy and indignation on something good for MetaFilter, like creating really smokin' good FPPs. Or if that's too much work for you, then get into each and every thread and do your damnedest to make it the most compelling use of MeFi e'er to be experienced.

Anyway, I'm glad to see you've warmed to my recommendation and are slowly but surely taking your own advice, nuggets of which I feel is my duty to repost, as a token of gratitude and an encouraging sign that community mores are alive and well in the sennoma household:

It seems that personal attacks are on the rise, at the expense of debate that focuses on the thread topic or rational criticism of poor posts. (...) Even if you see a pattern of bad posts I don't think it helps to go after the poster personally. Yank 'em into MeTa, lay out (with links) the pattern and explain what you think is bad about it. Nonresponders to the polite, constructive MeTa treatment can be diagnosed as trolls and ignored accordingly. In the worst and most refractory cases, Matt has shown willing to hit the smite button.(...)
In the realm of self-policing, I would like to see a move away from personal attacks and towards reasoned and constructive criticism.

Sennoma is my pal, but I have to disagree with him here--actually I agree with him in general, but suppose you have a poster who posts contemptuous, dismissive, disrespectful little asides in thread after thread and seems utterly impervious to, or oblivious of, the opinions of others. Sometimes you have to call a spade an ass.

And it's interesting, and rather telling, when we take what you said earlier in this thread and dissect it for what it's worth.

What FFF said, with double cream and extra slice. Well done, sir!

What did FFF say that was so correct to deserve double cream and extra slice? Oh yes...

So basically Miguel, you agree with FFF that community members should say, "To hell with the rules!" and post without discretion, just because they can. Sound familiar? Oh right, that's the same attitude you retain concerning MetaTalk posts. "To hell with etiquette! I want to make my own rules!" Your lack of respect for this site is appalling.

awesome pork rib rub:

ÂĽ cup paprika
3 tbsp. ground black pepper
2 tbsp. brown sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. chili powder
1½ tsp. garlic powder
1½ tsp onion powder

Mix ingredients in a bowl.
Rub lightly into a rack of pork ribs.
Put ribs into an oven-safe baking pan and cover with foil.
Heat oven to 350°
Let ribs cook for one hour.
Heat up the grill, slap them ribs down and grill until outer layer is nice and brown. I like 'em slightly burnt.
Eat.

Hidebound by rules eh The God Complex? Thanks for your condescending attitude. You weren't "simply pointing out", either. Next time resist the urge. As for the difference between a racial slur and a pie post, well, what do you think? You see similarities. That's just great, Complex.

You're over analyzing fff's intent. Get a life.

Your quip on the celebration of genocide and senseless slaughtering of an animal for mass food consumption really takes the cake. Better to send young marines to a senseless slaughter under false pretenses is ok by you. Right?

If you object so vehemently about the food served on holidays, I wonder what you've done to change that attitude. Nothing, would be my guess. You're so concerned for animals, do you drive a car? That isn't killing the human race though is it? Not going to rail about man's dependancy economically on the car are you? You're not? You gonna pick on farmers?

No you'll sit there and bellyache in general. Great.

dobbs,
If beth has a beef with my comment she/he can address that on their own, I'm sure. Are you her/his daddy? Thanks for your input. Not that it matters much [passive aggressive].

As for the snobs crticising The Joy of Cooking link, well, we all started somewhere. No doubt you're on to Le Cordon Bleu Classic French Cuisine, I'm fucking sure of it! Is that why the freezer sections have now taken over 3 aisles in mega grocery stores? The statistics and demographics say you're wrong. You haven't any time to cook and object being reminded with a simple recipe and get snotty about a cookbook, which still remains a good reference.

Funny I agree with fresh fish five regarding the self important rule obsessed preschoolers here. It's multiplying. Sadly.

People didn't agree with me? I couldn't give a shit if they agreed or not. A racist slur is racism, no matter how you cut it, Complex [indeed].

If you mean a slur strictly in the sense of being disparaging, you are correct. A slur can also refer to treating a word without the due respect it deserves, in which case it would be flippant, but not malicious (and all of this follows the logic that I agree with you that Stavros was using it in even the second manner). If you think either of the two remarks indicates racism--that is, that they believe their race to be genetically superior to that of black people--I would suggest that you are sadly mistaken, and the most they could be accused of is not treating loaded words with due reverence.

The klu klux klan think they're a community also. Nobody questions their beliefs in that community do they? Metafilter is the same, you're telling me? Yah, bad fucking analogy, Complex.

You're right; it's a fucking terrible analogy, which is why I'm so glad you made it and I just laughed when I read it.

As for the difference between a racial slur and a pie post, well, what do you think? You see similarities. That's just great, Complex.

Again, you made the connection. All I did was comment on what appears to be a hangup you had with how that issue was resolved (or not resolved), which you apparently don't care about but continue to harp on ad nauseum in yet another thread.

Your quip on the celebration of genocide and senseless slaughtering of an animal for mass food consumption really takes the cake. Better to send young marines to a senseless slaughter under false pretenses is ok by you. Right?

I forgot about that alleged no-Thanksgiving-means-senseless-slaughtering-of-young-marines connection that scientists at Harvard are feverishly working on. If said no-Thanksgiving-means-senseless-slaughtering-of-young-marines connection turns out to be more than hot air, I will gladly concede your point...

Great.

Perhaps you noticed the glib way in which I transitioned from commenting on genocide and mass slaughtering to my love of a good meal and pumpkin pie. One could almost see this my way of condemning my carefree attitude towards life that I, and so many others, have, which is to be expected when raised in the posh comforts of the first world.

Or, one could see none of this and make the exact same point, only with much, much more anger.

Now get along, doggies.

Yet you claim I'm the condescending one.

skin. No great harm was done, as I was close to my quarters. I
groped my way upstairs and knocked at the door of the ante-room,
where Tonine, who had not waited for me, was sleeping.
Awake in a moment she came to open the door in her smock, and without
a light. As I wanted one, I told her to get the flint and steel,
which she did, warning me in a modest voice that she was not dressed.
"That's of no consequence," said I, "provided you are covered." She
said no more, and soon lighted a candle, but she could not help

Calm down, sweetheart. Nobody's dissing The Joy of Cooking. As the first "snob" to criticize that aspect of the post, I assure you I love the book and have made many recipes from it. But like many others, I am disappointed with the new edition. Here's a representative reader's opinion I found online:
I have 4 editions of the Joy: one from the 40's, one from the 50's; the 75 edition, and this one. The 50's & 75 eds are improvements on the original; they retain most of the best recipes, while updating certain sections and techniques. Not so with the "new" edition! Fewer than half of the original recipes are retained, and whole sections (Canning, Game) have been eliminated. While some of the new recipes are good, and the expanded vegetarian offerings are nice, this is no longer the Joy of Cooking that I've known and loved since I first learned to cook. All in all, disappointing.
So don't be so fucking sure of things, OK?

Thanks for that last post, languagehat. My 75 JOC is stained and burnt as any well-used cookbook should be and I was thinking of upgrading. Anyway, I am glad to see something useful come out of this thread.

"Please tell me that "here's my favorite recipe" FPP's are not going to become a habit."

a) It's worse than that.
b) That's been the habit for while now.

These types of posts overran MetaFilter long ago. It's all about some topic that happens to be on the mind of the poster. "I'm thinking about pie. Let's all talk about pie." It's no longer about the link. No longer about something on the web. No longer about something new. No longer about filtering the web.

MetaFilter is now a chat site for a closed community. And most members seem to be just fine with that. So expect old, stuffy rules about double posts, self links, and even requiring a link at all, to go bye bye.

Matt is now hosting this year's version of AOL chatrooms.

I think anyone who would accuse me of being whiny, tight-assed, or otherwise way out of line, would be a person who didn't read my initial post or first comment. Hey, c'mon, I was trying to be nice, not even going after fff by name or anything.

I was just trying to calmly get across the opinion that hey, at least one person would like it if we would please steer away from this sort of thing in the future. I wanted to see if anyone agreed with me. Then all hell broke loose.

As long as we're going to be chatty, in case anyone wonders what happened to me after I got fired for reading mefi, I got a new job at a nursing home as a CNA, and I'm planning to start the prerequisites for nursing school this spring. So if all goes according to plan I will get be an RN sometime in June 2007 or so.

Lots of hard work between here and there, though, but at least I am started on a plan to claw my way back to the middle class. I think I would have been bored and unchallenged at the job where they fired me, and would be making far less in 2007 than I hope to as an RN. So maybe I'll look back in ten years and realize that getting fired was one of the best things that happened to me. Time will tell.

I'm not saying it's dead, it's just gone in a direction I personally think lessens the value immensely. With all the passion of the active members here I think we could create something better than a oddly structured chat forum.

"The assumption being that the web is worth filtering any more."

This is something I think about a great deal.

It's true that in the "old days" of 97-01 there were many more hidden gems that you'd never find on your own. MetaFilter was a Mecca because it provided one stop shopping for the really good stuff. With web culture and technology exploding, MetaFilter (along with several other sites) had it's finger on the pulse.

But these days we've become jaded to things like Kvetch. Weblogs have started talking about news and stopped finding personal niche content. New designs have become nearly extinct. Discussions about standards and technology have become boring.

Wait....... Have they? I think not. These things are still out there. Still being linked on MetaFilter every once in a while. It's just that the culture here has changed. Now it's about the discussion.

On top of that I think people are lazier web surfers. I know I am. I used to read 10-20 blogs a day. Now I read 1-3.

The stuff is still out there. We just gave up on doing the hard work to find it. The focus now is on low hanging fruit. I'm not excusing myself here. Just making a point. I could spend an extra hour a day finding cool links. But I don't.

Well, this thread brought up a good point but thanks to all the stand-up comics that happen to be members it turned out to be an almost completely irrelevant discussion. I'm going to comment anyway.

I for one, am sick to death of the stupid injoking that happens here endlessly. It was funny in 2001, ok? Get over it. You're not postmodern, you're not clever, and you're certainly not funny, so give it a fucking rest. I realize that most people don't find me funny here, so I don't crack puns/drop in-jokes/make obscure pop-culture references. It's just a waste of time. The only person on this whole fucking board that is consistently funny is quonsar (and maybe Stan Chin, and Cold Chef, but I think he fell off the wagon somewhere). I didn't really care for the recipe thing, but it didn't bother me either. It seems a little too complex and drawn out to continue, so why worry?

In the past, I have been called a troll (deservedly so, in several cases). However, isn't dropping pointless and constant jokes somewhat trolling? It often completely derails what would have be a good thread, and probably disappoints the poster. When a thread devolves into name-calling and ad-hominems, it can be disappointing, but when it devolves into a constant barrage of unfunny jokes (like the thread where everyone wrote thank-you letters instead of commenting) its just a waste of time that you will only read once. This "comedy" isn't what keeps me coming back to MetaFilter.

And if BlueTrain was at the wheel? Yikes! Long live King Log!

when it devolves into a constant barrage of unfunny jokes its just a waste of time that you will only read once.
Gee, you finally get it. This is our way of stating how pointless the whole thread is. Very few posts, funny or serious, are worthy of reading more than once.
This "comedy" isn't what keeps me coming back to MetaFilter.
So skip the jokes.

insomnyuk: You're in the wrong thread.

beth: Good for you! Thanks for brightening this dank thread (whose dankness is none of your doing; you were nice as pie).

this insomnyuk, it vibrates?
posted by quonsar at 1:54 PM on October 14, 2003

Yes, yes it does.

languagehat: i thought it somewhat applied, since the recipe thing has become a part of the injoking, and since much injoking took place in this thread. Thanks for the tip though, I'll remember you when I'm running the country.

Sorry dobbs, I thought The God Complex said it, but in my haste couldn't find it in that smoky haze of his.

I will stand by what I said to your "not that it matters much" as being passive-aggressive, sparky.

I instantly heard this in the voice of the baby on The Family Guy. Now I can't read this or anything else he has written and not hear Stewie...

::hears ax grinding::

Is that you y2karl? I thought that we had agreed that you'd back off me for some time...

Such a shame. I leave you with this:

I repeat, between just us two--who has the grudge here? He was not elected the judge here, he shouldn't be allowed to get away with these vendettas. He should mind his own business and stop constantly sniping at people he's picked fights with previously. His constant attacks on people on his shit list does this place no good. Everyone on his list leaves him alone except when he keeps bringing the same shit up over and over. Why should we have to turn the other cheek at his gratuitous attacks? Why are we at fault for not taking his shit silently? - y2karl

A tear was brought to my eye, until I felt the horrible hypocrisy that is your posting style. Post again when you bring some conviction to the table.
