Three comments (besides the fact that I love Metafilter):

- Don't count your own replies as new comments
- The new comment count is mysterious. Is that 10 new since the last time I visited the site, clicked on a link (in other words if I stopped reading and came back later), last time I read that particular post, I dunno. I always think I'm missing replies because I read slow. (Multitasking, of courese)
- Preview button for comments too!

Keep up the good work all!

- hmmm. I could do this, but I don't think it's that big of a deal to count people's own comments (although I can see the utility of not counting, like when people say "more inside" and post the rest of their long post in the first comment).

- the new comment count is just based on your entry to the metafilter.com index page. It's supposed to keep the count for 10 minutes, no matter how many times you reload metafilter.com. If you come back within 10 minutes, the count is supposed to start all over again, but it is a bit buggy for me. Sometimes it holds the same last visit time for hours. I'll have to look at the session variables to see if I can clean it up.

- preview for comments coming this week. I wanted to try it out on MetaTalk first, but ran out of steam last night. But I guarantee that there will be comment previews by Friday.

Id like it if the new comment thing was there for each thread until I read the new ones (or not). I've had MF as my home page for a while, but I had to change it because every time I started the browser, it would start a session even if I was going somewhere else. Then I'd go back to MF and it would say "0 new" and I'd have to manually check every thread to find the new stuff.
