I've noticed that I use a pair of tags for my front page posts that no other or only a few other posters use. Doing some digging, I've found a few unique or highly limited tags. Do you know of any more? [more inside]
Similar to fffm's pony request
from January, I wonder whether it would be possible to add another flag category or two. [more inside]
When constructing FPPs for the blue, how do you determine which tags to use? Nouns, proper nouns, verbs, adjectives, things that appear in your post, things that don't appear in your post, number of tags? I'm rarely ... no, never ... happy with the tags I assign to a post and wonder if they are rubbish, and future readers interested in the subject will never find it because of insufficient tagging, or readers not interested in the post will come across it because of vague or overdone tagging. Reminded of this issue when looking at, and admiring, the (IMHO) beautifully contextual and comprehensive tagging
that has gone into that post. [more inside]
The page Popular tags on MetaFilter
has a list of the 150 most-used tags. What about the least-used tags? Is there a list of tags that have only been used once? What about a list of tags only used by one user?
We have clouds for the top 150 tags posted to Mefi
. We can see the top ten tags we've used listed on user profiles. Would it be possible to view all tags (or a greater subset than 'top ten') for individual users, either in a list or cloud form? [more inside]
Let's create two new special tags for AskMe: Updated and ReAsk [more inside]
This is going to be my first feature request on the site. I was wondering if it'd be possible to add a Sarcastic Font
tag to our arsenal of HTML when posting. As many of you are aware, it is sometimes extremely hard to convey sarcasm in written text, and I think this would really benefit some people by spelling out when someone is being sarcastic. Here are some examples
of its use. Thank you for your time, and just so you know, HAMBURGER jokes are so
2011 (or whenever that was first introduced).
We just added (staff) markers in the bylines here in MetaTalk if the commenter is a mod. [more inside]
Can we mobile users have more HTML composition buttons? [more inside]
Would it be possible to raise the maximum number of mefimails to 100 per hour? [more inside]
Pony filter: Combine tags so as to EXCLUDE questions that have some specified tag. [more inside]
Pony/suggestion: What about being able to browse posts by multiple tags, but with OR as opposed to merely AND. This would mostly be to combat tag redundancy, but could also be useful in general. [more inside]
Do you use tags to search MeFi? [more inside]
Small pony: MeFi search doesn't index tags. [more inside]
Interesting bug: I forgot to close an italics tag
the other day, and it seems to have affected my comment history.
Will this be a problem for future generations of MeFites?
Can a tag search for "thing" also return "things"? [more inside]
Pony: A spoiler tag. [more inside]
A tale of two questions.... [more inside]
Since promoting the resolved tag worked so well, how about promoting the stumped tag?
When the "title" tag is used on a link, it most often provides useful additional information (or a bit of nonsense that was better left out of the main text). So why not make it easy to do? Can you add a second field in the link dialog box to fill in a title tag? One rule for posters: Please don't use it for important parenthetical information like (pdf) or (NSFW).
Listing posts by a specific user with a specific tag fails for some older posts, probably because they've been retrospectively tagged. [more inside]
So, is there any reason why the tag view (example)
has no comment count?
Feature request: a way to count, by tag, by user how many comments you posted to threads of a certain type? [more inside]
You know those little MP3 or PDF tags on Wikipedia external links
(see last external link), informing users they are about to click on a special file along with the file size? That would sure be nice for MeFi.
should also be tagged E8
. [more inside]
I have found a bug. You can never get to the second+ page of a tag search. [more inside]
Suggestion: <spoiler> (this text is unreadable unless some action is taken) </spoiler> tags. [more inside]
When posting to the blue, I'm told that "1 post has been tagged with one of your tags ( long list of_tags GoesHere ) within the past 24 hours." I think this feature would be more useful if it told you which tag(s) and post(s) it was referring to.
So with all the (very very greatly appreciated!) tagging going on, is there some way to search on more than two specific tags at a time? I love the /tags/thing1+thing2, but that seems to be all there is...
What ever became of the idea to retrotag older posts? There seemed to be a consensus in this thread
, but it aged out before any decision was made.
When I view my "My Comments" page, everything after this comment
is small. There seems to be no closing tag. The original post page is fine. Is there some auto-closing mechanism that needs to be implemented in the new My Comments page?
I would love to see a page that lists the tags related to the threads I have favorited. My favorites list has become unmanagable, and this would be a great way to navigate / explore what I've saved earlier. I have no idea if this has been asked for previously...
The Front Page Posting page shows a big blob listing ALL the tags I have used on previous posts. Particularly big because I have made 199 posts on at least 175 different topics, including high-tech band-aids (an early NewsFilter with 2 now-dead links)
, a-list blogs
, MetaFilter-related stuff before MetaTalk existed (this post features jessamyn making a suggestion to create something like MetaTalk) Interpol
, Steely Dan
, and Fat People (without a trainwreck in the comments!)
... and that was all in my first month participating here.
Anyway, that tag blob, as it now exists, does me no benefit and just blocks the way to the "Preview" button. Can we have options to show NO tags or most used tags or tags used more than once ple-e-e-eze?
These days mefi tags
all look about the same size (Opera 9.x, OS X). Is tweaking the math easy enough that the tag sizing could once again be a useful indicator of relative popularity? If not, no biggie.
How can I get y2karl's informative pop up title tags to fit my browser window consistently? On the current post
the prospect magazine snippet is an almost square box - which fits fine - and the NYT snippet is so wide that I cannot read it all.
Music.mefi question: Would it be inappropriate to add a band name/artist name tag to tracks you post if your songs come from several different bands?
" tag finally gets used in another maiden post
Is tagging your first FPP as such a good idea? Should NeoFites be recommended to do so? Should we all go back and backtag our front page deflowerings?
The tag page for infanticide
says that there's 1 post tagged with infanticide, but there doesn't appear to be any. Deleted tag/thread issue? Bonus points: relevant tags for Indian/Chinese infant gender disparity.
A pair of tag-related pony-requests: I've been looking for tag search for a while, and just today discovered it exists on the Metafilter search
page. Would it be possible to:
- put a copy of the tag search on the "Tags" page?
- add the same sort of tag searching in AskMe?
AskMe preview is broken
when the post contains list tags.
Could we have it set up that mousing over the number of comments in a FPP shows us the tags? [more inside]
minor annoyance filter: can the url: http://www.metafilter.com/tag/x redirect to http://www.metafilter.com/tags/x? (likewise for AskMe)
I know it's minor, but "tags" seems nonstandard given how other sites work.
What's the character limit on tags? I tried to add the tag 'BuffalobuffaloBuffalobuffalobuffalobuffaloBuffalobuffalo' to this thread
and got instead:
Error Executing Database Query. [Macromedia][SQLServer JDBC Driver][SQLServer]String or binary data would be truncated. Saw nothing about it in the FAQ.
some index pages of askme posts with NSFW tags report that there are more posts than are returned. [more inside]
It would be useful if one could add tags to another person's Ask Metafilter post—it could clarify the content where the original poster has neglected tagging altogether, or where the poster's tags are vague. The user-added tags could be marked as such, and kept separate from the poster's tags. Is this possible? Or would we be afraid of abuse?
Could we get a <spoiler> tag?
On the favorites page, could we show what user created the comment/post?
Could we add tags to the favorites page?
