I've noticed that I use a pair of tags for my front page posts that no other or only a few other posters use. Doing some digging, I've found a few unique or highly limited tags. Do you know of any more? [more inside]
Hey, just a reminder that when tagging posts that if you put a space between words that counts as two tags, not one. [more inside]
When constructing FPPs for the blue, how do you determine which tags to use? Nouns, proper nouns, verbs, adjectives, things that appear in your post, things that don't appear in your post, number of tags? I'm rarely ... no, never ... happy with the tags I assign to a post and wonder if they are rubbish, and future readers interested in the subject will never find it because of insufficient tagging, or readers not interested in the post will come across it because of vague or overdone tagging. Reminded of this issue when looking at, and admiring, the (IMHO) beautifully contextual and comprehensive tagging
that has gone into that post. [more inside]
The page Popular tags on MetaFilter
has a list of the 150 most-used tags. What about the least-used tags? Is there a list of tags that have only been used once? What about a list of tags only used by one user?
We have clouds for the top 150 tags posted to Mefi
. We can see the top ten tags we've used listed on user profiles. Would it be possible to view all tags (or a greater subset than 'top ten') for individual users, either in a list or cloud form? [more inside]

Posts about adverts are controversial on Metafilter. Some people think adverts are ok. Others find them intrinsically distasteful. Mystery meat posts that turn out to be 'hey look at this great advert' and nothing more can lead to derails and nasty arguments over whether or not using Metafilter to spread advertising in this way is acceptable or not. Accurate tagging of such posts with 'advert' or 'advertisement' could avoid this. [more inside]
Metadata for Metafilter Pony request: would it be possible to have a box that pops up that says something like "We noticed you're using tags X and Y, here are some other tags commonly associated with X and Y," to improve the descriptive qualities of user provided tags? [more inside]
Should tagging an AskMe thread "resolved" automatically remove the "stumped" tag, if it's there? [more inside]
How can I get notified when X topic comes up? For example, I'm interested in a Twin Cities meetup but don't log in every day. Is there a way to make a tag and get MeMail'ed or something when a keyword like Minneapolis or MeetUp is posted? Thanks.
Do you use tags to search MeFi? [more inside]

Another favoriting discussion. With very many users having hunderds, and some thousands of favorites, it can become unweildy navigating favorites. If they are indeed intended as a bookmarking tool, it would be helpful to be able to tag them so we can find things we intend to come back to in the future.

Why don't we have tags in MetaTalk?
Holy crap, the back tagging project (recent update
) is complete! 43,000 old posts have been keyworded by a team of hundreds of volunteers here. A huge thanks to all, I never thought we'd finish up all those old MeFi posts. [more inside]

Would it be hard to enable AskMe's tagging system with a bit of AJAX so existing tags are pulled from the database as you type them -- kind of an "auto-recommend" feature -- in order to prevent redundancy?
! What are the top 10 tags displayed on your userpage? (For both MeFi and AskMe.)
Also, we're nearing 50%—let's do a page (or 3 =)
Why are the multiple words we use as tags kept together, that is, no spaces?
Is there any way of having an overlapping system of tags to categorize these MetaTalk posts? So for 'feature requests' that could be a sub-tag of either the 'Metafilter', 'Ask Metafilter' or 'Metatalk' tags. So when I want to see what is being discussed about improving Ask Metafilter I start by selecting that tag and then start clicking the sub tags to get more specific. Finally, the reason I am asking is because I am concerned about the flooding of questions on AskMe and the thing I would do is have a separate section for technology questions as those questions seem to be at least 50% of all questions asked. Cheers.
is a tag that has been used only once
on askmefi. I'm truly amazed. More people should be using this in the human relations section, I think. I'm sure it would suit many other categories as well. If people were more attuned to what a mindfuck is . . . then they wouldn't be posting a lot of those human relationship questions, I guess.
Could there be a 'family' category for AskMeFi? I felt weird asking a question about my daughter and categorizing it as 'human relations', which based on my reading over the last year or so seemed mostly to mean make-up/break-up questions!
on a recent post
of mine seems to break mefi. Are punctuation marks within tags verboten?
I want tags on metatalk.
Looks like you're trying to delete tags fromto the wrong post. Go .
Someone added the tags "penis
" and "vagina" to this post
. I'm unable to remove them.
May I suggest that the careersuicide
tag, introduced today by jonson, has tremendous potential? For example, Ted Haggard
, John Kerry
, Mel Gibson
, George Allen
I notice on my recent FPP
that there is a tag -- "ushmm
" -- which I did not write/include. When I click on the "x" to delete it, it does not get deleted but returns this message: "Looks like you're trying to delete tags fromto the wrong post. Go."
[sic]. Bug? Hack?
Tags: I hate how they have to be crunched into one word. What's the policy/ettiquette about using underscores? Does it break the database? Or should I avoid them just because they're not convention, therefore no one will know to search for them?
Suggestions on improving the questions one finds on the 'Answered' and 'Unanswered' tabs on AskMe. [more inside]

Pony: All posts by user suchandsuch tagged soandso? As it is, on a user's posting page, there's a list of frequently-used tags, but if you follow the links, you get all posts so tagged, when what you might expect (and even, in some cases, want) is just that user's posts so tagged.
Use of the Damned Tags Filter:
Why don't people tag their posts? A simple addition of Colbert to the previous thread would have made it insanely easy to find.
Someone added tags to my post
. I'll wear the 'obit' and 'obituary' but the '.' has to go. When I try to delete it i get "Looks like you're trying to delete tags fromto the wrong post. Go ."
Oops, putting a question mark
at the end of tags breaks the tag URLs
[pony] Tags in MetaTalk?
I'm testing out tag search on MeFi. Here's a search for "goo

" showing typical results. It can be reached on the search page

Dear Matt, would it be possible to grant a few trusted volunteers enough rights to be able to add tags to the MeFi and AskMe back catalogue?

There was a page that listed 'all' tags that had been used on Ask MetaFilter. I can't seem to find it now. Any clues where it is now?
Robots.txt for the <tagname>.metafilter.com domains should exclude all rebots. Currently the robots reindex the entire site for each subdomain.
I didn't put the tag 'gay marriage' on my post
, and I didn't change the formatting so as to make comments #2 & #7 nonsensical.
That's 'cos I didn't see it as being about gay marriage. I guess someone else did. You have got my email address, so...
Tags with "multiple words in quotes" instead of onewordwikistyle (and clear guidelines on the tagging convention) might prevent people from making such messes
with their tags. (I know the posting area clearly says multiple words should be strung together, but people just don't read, and it's not intuitive.) Granted, I know this would screw up the hundreds of posts already tagged, so then maybe this is better off as a another call for a trusted "tagging clean-up committee"
