Ways to make posts more accessible for neurodivergent folks

FPPs whose links are only to videos aren't very accessible to many neurodivergent people. Many people aren't aware of this. Wondering how to make things better here on Metafilter. [more inside]

Time to change from HTML?

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before recently, but are there any plans to change or add on text coding options beyond HTML? Like Markdown or rich text? [more inside]

Wordshore will speak words for you in an English accent

Following a short but successful experiment, the result of which being that Mr Bondcliff of the USA is now the happy owner of a most unusual phone ringing tone, I have decided to speak words of the choosing of MeFites. "Hit me up", as the young MeFites apparently say, with some words and I will - within reason - create a sound file of spoken delights for you and others to listen to. [more inside]

Can we get a bigger text box on Mobile Modern?

The text box for posting comments on mobile (I'm talking about Modern theme here; Classic has similar but slightly different issues) is really small. It makes it hard for me to write more than a couple sentences without losing track of what I was talking about. Sometimes I just give up. Can it be bigger? [more inside]

Flagging update: new free-form text option, tweaking flag lists

I'm excited to announce we're rolling out a long-requested feature: free-form text flagging, a new flagging option that will allow you to, when necessary, leave a brief note when you flag a post or comment. We've also tweaked the list of predefined flagging reasons to reduce the length of the list a bit. [more inside]

Help test flagging with a free-form text field

Hey! Help us test out a new feature: a flagging option to leave a short note in a free-form text field instead of choosing one of the pre-defined flagging reasons. We'd like to make sure the core functionality is working well in this thread before rolling it out on the site for actual use, so come on in and kick the tires a bit! [more inside]

Metafilter Colours.

(Or, "colors", if you prefer..) While wearing my standard-version MetaFilter t-shirt a few days ago, I offhandedly commented to my husband that I liked the sort-of lime-ish green colour of the "Filter" portion of text. He was totally perplexed because, apparently, the colour is NOT green it's yellow. WHAT?? [more inside]

Post about scanning text from images?

I've been looking for a recent post about a new site (or program or script) that will scan the text in an image. It was posted about a month or so ago...ring a bell with anyone?

AskMe about mixed up text messages

I could have sworn that there was an AskMe not too long ago about sending one text message but having a different one come up on your recipient's phone. Of course, I can't find it. Am I thinking of something I read somewhere else, or does this question exist?

Look, you're really cute, but I can't understand what you're saying...

"Looks like you're searching for an exact phrase. The local search doesn't do that so well. Be sure to try your search for "_____" at Google if you don't find what you're looking for here." Perhaps it's just my colorblind eyes, but I can't see anything other than the "deep space nine" link in the notice above my search results. Is there any chance the Big Dark Bar of Highlighting could be changed to a different color so the text stands out more effectively? Thank you!

Did the text size on the blue get shrunk?

Text size issue - looks smaller on the front page of the blue than it used to. I increased text size in my profile, now the blue looks "normal" (like it did before) but MetaTalk and AskMe look much bigger. [more inside]

Anybody else miss the old Metafilter Text Ads system?

Anybody else miss the old Metafilter Text Ads system? Those were great, the ones where you just paypal $20 and get a little text ad for your blog or whatever. The only site I know of that still has that system (which I believe was pioneered here at MeFi) is Kuro5hin. Anybody know of any others?

Doctor my eyes...

OK, so I know I can enlarge text in Fire Fox and Chrome and so forth.. but a growing number of of sites (e.g The New Yorker) provide the ability to resize text (usually 3 choices) and it's cookie stored so that every time the site is revisited, that text size is..automatacilly, magically, there. I don't personally need it, but I bet some older folks do. 'oh yes I do', he mumbled

Text-mode MeFi?

Reading works just fine already, either via RSS or just a text-mode browser. Posting is a little harder. Links, Elinks, and w3m all seem baffled by the login---Elinks, for example, reloads the login page, while w3m gets back to the question but then asks me to log in again. Does anyone know why this is so? Is there some common unsupported standard that prevents these browsers from logging in? (Note: It happens with a lot of sites that need login, not just MeFi.)

Giant stone statues shrink Recent Activity

24/7

Ooh, I'm so excited! My very first pedantic MetaTalk post! The text of the link on the user favorites page says "You can also view a list of the most popular in the last 24 hours," but the actual Popular Favorites page lists the "most favorited posts in the past 7 days." Do I get a prize?!?

Tiny text is hard to read!

The tiny text that some posters tend to use as asides (example here in miss lynsters comment) is truly hard to read in anything longer than a sentence, particularly for those of us born to the mole people. This seems to be the best place as any other to ask that people consider that [small] font is rather difficult to read in chunks! ( I realize that yes, the actual answer is to Ctrl-+ on FireFox read it and reverse, but then everything else goes huge. )

Mouseover text annoying, unhelpful

57-Chevy-with-a-double-headlight-kit-Filter. Why, when one hovers a link in a post, does the text in the status bar now read 'short cut to x' ? This actually makes it harder to tell to what the link is. Short cut to 53601 tells one nothing. Why does it now have be a detective novel to tell where the link leads ? This is counter-intuitive--why make it more work to tell what the link is ? This is not user friendly.

Please bring back to the status bar the address one would read in the address bar and forget this 'short cut to' crap. Here's a concept: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Mouseover Madness, Or, The Terrible Title.

Mouseover Madness, Or, The Terrible Title.

I applaud the use of the title attribute, but here the text is so long there isn't time to read it before the browser hides it again.

Textbox more constricting than tighty-whiteys

Could we make the Post a Link page's description field be a bit bigger? On my most recent FPP post, I found that I was using a lot of markup (really the first time I had done markup this extensive for a FPP) and having trouble making code changes/editing content because the textbox just seems a bit constricting. Also, this could be helpful for Metatalk as well.

Problem with MeFi displaying really large text.

Text preferences not changing on second computer

I read MeFi from two different computers (one at home, one at work); I changed my MeFi text preferences on my machine at work and they applied without problem. The prefs don't take on my home machine, though, even after I went to the bother of going back into the prefs on my home machine and resetting them again to be exactly the same as my work machine.

Yes, I have the same fonts on both machines, as well as the same browser (IE 5.5 SP1).

Any clues?

Can the stylesheet please be changed to not hard-code the point sizes for text?

This has to be an FAQ, but I couldn't find it anywhere:

Can the stylesheet please be changed to not hard-code the point sizes for text? I really would like to make the text smaller, and IE 5.5 won't ignore those absolute sizes. I hear Opera will, but I'm not ready to switch browsers.
