Look, I'm really embarrassed that I am posting this to meta, where it doesn't belong, and I have tried the direct to the mod approach, but it hasn't worked. So I have a bit of a personal emergency, I'm coping, but I need some galant person to post this to Ask for me? Any takers? I'm really not trying to break the rules, I rarely post to Ask, but I need some help, and I carelessly have asked a question in the last week. . Question below. [more inside]

I'm looking for an old Ask thread about the different ways people do well in school. It talked about the disdain people who glide through have for the people who study hard, and that the former consider effort a sign of not being smart enough to excel without trying. [more inside]

Ask.Metafilter is over 5 years old now, with volumes of suggestions and helpful ideas. philosophistry sorted through the years of posts categorized as Human Relations and Work & Money, and created ranked listings of the books people recommended the most often: Human Relations, Work & Money. Note that each little thumbs-up icon is a link back to the post which referred to the book in question.

This AskMe post has made me lose my faith in humanity, and I desperately need to spew bile about that. [more inside]

I'm looking for a post--either on the front page or in Ask MetaFilter--about a website that offered work-for-trade, or work-for-services, or some such. I remember the site could be used, for example, by a bricklayer and a painter, where the painter needed a new patio and the bricklayer needed his house painted--sort of an eBay for trade skills. I can't remember if it was an FPP, or a link posted as part of a comment, or an answer to an AskMetaFilter question. Anyone?

Who has ever, or intends to ever, or never will, view pornography, at work?
This Ask Metafilter is devolving into this question rather than how the situation should be handled.

Couldn't find any references to this, so here goes: Jessa Werner (another blogger fired, and discussed) is mentioned in the second half of this Thursday's Times piece on (not) blogging at work.

Once upon a time not so long ago, I could type in the FQDN http://www.metafilter.org and actually resolve that address and browse Metafilter threads from my office. Now, when I try to use that address, it automatically reverts to http://www.metafilter.com and that address is blocked by my company's "Smartfilter" as "chat/forums". I can't read threads at work anymore and I'm pretty sad about that.

Without getting specific, does it not seem unethical to use Ask Metafilter to answer your employer's questions?
Is this acceptable, or what is the limit? (or maybe we need to implement some sort of "I'll answer for a percentage"
scheme - since you are getting paid to know the answer)

How important, with MeFi or Meta posts and comments, are extraneous factors like time, caffeine, midwork intervals or alcohol? Is there really a before and after coffee; a morning and late night inflection; according to how long you've been up and what you've ingested to get through the day? I think there is. Is the time-stamp your best counsellor and friend? Specially considering the wildly disparate time-zones? No names mentioned; just saying. In my humble opinion, the hour (and the perceived condition or, more generally, circumstances) says as much as the name. If not more.

Does anyone know of sites/blog sections that let people talk about interesting jobs? My question springs from the IT Workers Get Back to Basics thread, particularly the guy who turned to music, the guy who wants to move to France and learn to make wine and the archeologist's assistant. I tried a couple of google searches, but didnt come up with anything that really yielded anything interesting.
I grew up in small towns and wasn't terribly outgoing, so I never got to talk to a wide range of adults about what they did and how they got to doing it in the first place. To me, it's one of the most interesting conversations you can have.

Webpig of IG got fired because he ran IG. Now Heather Hamilton of dooce.com gets fired because she posted not so nice things about her job and co-workers (though kept all names out of the picture). Is it wrong that people be fired because another employee sends an anonymous email to the boss about these things?

I've been SmartFiltered out of MeFi at work. I swear I only looked when I was doing a build. Mostly.
I tried using Ben Brown's MeFi/RSS demo but it's got no links. Bad enough I can't see the discussions, but no links! (It's kind of like wanting a cigarette and having to make do witha picture of one.)
Where do I want to go today? Without MeFi, I haven't got a clue.
Is there a solution, or am I doomed to be more productive at work?
