What do you do when you post condescending noise in an Axme and it gets deleted? Post it again in essentially the same form, of course. But wait! Don't forget to act indignant for maximum effect. [mi]

For reference, Rothko's first deleted comment was something along the lines of "an education never ends." Taken separately, these comments are merely noise, but together they represent a stubborn effort to befoul a thread and insult the asker without answering the question. It looks a lot like an attempt to bring personal grudges onto the Green, and while it doesn't bother me much, I'd like Axme to remain a place where we leave those things behind.

P.S. Although it still doesn't answer the question, there is a perfectly fine way of expressing Rothko's message without being an ass.

I'm often bothered by the same kind of thing, but you have to bear in mind that flagging it is the best thing you can do. Engaging someone in-thread only picks up the thread of derailment and carries it further, even if the essence of your comment is an objection to derailment. Did that make sense?

Reposting deleted comment? Definitely big balled demonstration of minimal brains. It's often baldly defiant shite like that that earns a bannination... though eating shit over email seems to get most everyone out of that fate these days.
posted by scarabic at 7:40 PM on November 13, 2005

The first comment was neither noise nor condescending. It was deleted with no reason given. I reposted my comment with clarification.

Then you behave like an ass and call me out for no reason, there and now here.

I'll let my excellent AskMe record speak for itself, as well as your repeated antagonistic and rude responses.

No, no, Rothko, you've got it wrong. You're supposed to wait and let other people deem the callout "pathetic" for you rather than jumping straight into the middle of what is obviously a very biased conflict for you (by definition).

The best way to receive a callout is not to even be aware of it for about 48 hours, at which point, if you're of any interest to anyone, it will have devolved into pure nonsense, at which point you can whimsically drop your ass in to say "hi Mom!" before happily fucking off.

Learn the drill, man.

At least understand that there's no way to survive a callout solo. If you remain at your keyboard, waiting to deflect every single comment mano-y-mano, you're not only going to look like a defensive drama queen, you're going to fucking lose. No one is smarter than everyone.

Question: PhD filter: did you find your experience worth the time invested? Did it bother you that it took until your late twenties/early thirties only to complete your education?

Addendum: I would be studying electrical engineering, possibly with a biomedical lean. I enjoy my work, and I do see myself in an academic (or at least heavily research-dominated) environment as a final goal.

My concerns stem from the fact that I tend to see a degree as a means to an end - something you are stuck with doing until "real life" begins. At what could be five years or more, however, a commitment to a PhD is more like a way of life in itself. And so, I just wanted to hear some perspectives from people who have been through it before. (On preview, googly captures the attitude nicely.)

Answer: Your education will never be complete, no matter what paper credentials you get. You might consider valuing a graduate education for learning how to learn, not for the end product.

Sounds like a perfectly reasonable exchange to me. I'm glad I haven't read much of the other crap, I'm sure it would be a waste of time.

But seriously folks, it seemed like a perfectly reasonable comment to me. A bit high-handed? Eh...maybe, but not deletion or Metatalk worthy. And probably true to a certain extent.

Rothko may very well make himself look like an off-meds twit before this thread is over, but he's well deserved in being annoyed by this callout. It seems like a personality rather than a rules thing.

I really don't see how answering a lot of questions makes your record excellent. The first page contains zero "best answers". What's your point with this comment?

The last time metafilter became all about Rothko, you just kept going and going and going, creating ang defending a problem. Have you not learned, or do you enjoy this sort of confilict?

Seriously, I was one of the first to add you as a contact after the "drama queen" thread, because you gave me some good advice once in an ask metafilter thread. What's your fucking problem? Do you like this kind of thing?
posted by interrobang at 8:49 PM on November 13, 2005

The first page contains zero "best answers". What's your point with this comment?

It contains three. That's just the first page. I've given good answers where people say thanks for the help, and mention specific people (including me), but don't mark a best answer.

It might seem arrogant, but I think that my AskMe record speaks for itself, the larger point being that I don't bring personal conflicts into AskMe. I help people.

I know that may blow your mind, but it's true, nonetheless. I've helped out on many occasions many people who I don't get along with in the blue and grey. God knows why I bother.

Anyway, none of this has much to do with Krrrlson now changing the terms of his shitty call-out. I'd love to see the usual peanut gallery stand up and be consistent and nail him to the wall for his little stunt. This thread will be a litmus test, I guess.

I really, truly will not get into that issue here. Suffice it to say that this call-out sucks and everyone knows it.

No, everyone doesn't know it. You are a loudmouth in exactly the same way that dios is, except that dios occasionally posts things that have to do with his professional expertise.

Every once in awhile, dios posts a comment that has to do with his job as a lawyer, and his comments fill you in on what's going on from the legal perspective.

You, however, barge into threads with your opinions and have only one single perspective--the Rothko view. And it is a loud view.

I generally agree with you, but at this point, you're kind of like that guy at the party who cant stop talking about "Stand On Zanzibar"--I know that it's a great book, and I've already read it, but I wish you'd shut up.
posted by interrobang at 9:38 PM on November 13, 2005

Rothko, your answer did suck. Krrrlson's question was very straight-forward and very clear. Your response doesn't answer his question at all. Instead you seem to be responding to the question that you think Krrlson should be asking hence Krrlson's accusation of condescension. Usually you are very helpful in AskMe, particularly tech questions, but in the future I advise you to stick as close to the question and not second-guess the poster. The correct response: apologize and move on.

And Krrlson, really, get a grip. This is hardly worth a callout. I know you couldn't resist another potential Rothko pile-on but it gets old. Really, really old. There's nothing to be gained by this thread except perhaps another point in whatever imaginary, childish game you think you're playing.

The only pathetic and sad thing here is that you two couldn't deal with this like adults.
posted by nixerman at 9:41 PM on November 13, 2005

Anyway, none of this has much to do with Krrrlson now changing the terms of his shitty call-out.

I fail to see where I changed any terms; I merely reposted the Axme guidelines, which you should have reviewed before posting to the thread.

To clarify my reasons for this callout, I was under the impression that if you post something that does not answer a question at all, it is noise. When it sounds condescending to boot, that makes it worse. When you repost it after deletion and then demand an apology for being called on it... well, that's when it becomes a pattern of behaviour that should be called out.

I'll be glad to apologize if you earnestly meant well with your responses, but I find it hard to believe. From what I recall, you are (or were?) a grad student yourself Alex. If so, why post a trite non-answer like "your education is never complete" when you could have actually responded to my question and shared your experience?

Your reaction to this callout...

...pathetic call-out. Sad.
A sad and pathetic call-out.
Krrrlson is the only drama queen here.
I pass my shiny tiara on to you, Krrrlson. You've earned it. Really, you have.
...apparently Krrrlson feels the need to stretch his drama muscles. You go, girl!

... only serves to reinforce my belief that your behaviour in the Axme was an extension of a personal grudge.

Alex, you had been doing so well since the contest, consistently helpful and charming, riding on the wave of good will that the contest generated for you. Don't blow it here in a grudge match.

Jesus Christ.

What a shitfest. This was a lame callout.

Rothko-I've written similar things before, as have others in this very thread, but why, oh why, must you make it so hard to respect and agree with you? Why do you think it's alright to affect such a whiny and supercilious tone in response to the smallest perceived slight? I thought your answer was decent, your demand for an apology in thread harsh and unpleasant, and that this callout was lame. Your responses in this thread, however, have made me completely unsympathetic to your position. There are two things that I would urge you to consider:

1) Not everyone who disagrees with you is "against" you. They might just disagree with you without personal motivation or investment.
2) When you feel as put upon as you evidently do, it's a good idea to identify and try not to alienate those who might even loosley be considered allies, like, say, all those who thought this was a lame callout.

I didn't see the first post but agreed the second one was off-topic, removed it, and told Krrrlson that mathowie and I were both on vacation this past week. Then this happens.

So, Krrrlson, you have to relax about it. This callout was a little over the top. Rothko you really really need to leave it alone. This callout would have quietly died if you hadn't kept it alive. It seems like every MetaTalk thread devolves into two guys wrestling with each other, so this one has not reached its natural conclusion yet.

These are the posts behind this call-out, right? Just wanna clarify that.

While I don't see how Rothko's comment exactly answers Krrrlson's question, I think it's a legitimate enough comment (it's a lot closer than a lot of AskMe comments get to the subject) and I don't see any condescension in the comment.

Rothko, you should have just let it lie. It's obvious to most everyone that it's a bad call-out. If you had just let it alone you wouldn't have yet another thread where people are calling you "Drama Queen". Yes, you have the right to defend yourself. BUT, please, please, please - take a walk, take a few deep breaths, take a nap, do whatever you need to do to wait a while and see how the thread goes before jumping in with both feet. Please. So the question is, does depression cause a drop in self-assessment, or does accurate self-assessment cause depression?

Both of your options have huge flaws in logic. While depression might cause a drop in self-assessment, it may not be a deserved drop (since depression makes you feel needlessly inadequate). And since accurate self-assessment is so rare (according to the study), the likelihood of depression being caused by an accurate self-assessment is even more rare.

But that study does fit well here (in MetaFilter) since the internet (and its anonymity) seems to inflate one's self-assessment astronomically.

Rothko, I don't know you, or the other protagonists in this little melodrama. Further, I am oblivious to your previous history that some posters refer to. Perhaps then, you'll take this advice as it a meant, and not as a biased observation.

I'd suggest that you really ought to examine your priorities in attending this place. It's beginning to seem that me you come here not to be intellectually engaged or entertained; but rather to instead proclaim your superiority and righteousness.

You are willfully deaf to your allies, who consistently advise you to chill out. Your unwillingness to accept this rather sound advice smacks of a pretty severe insecurity.

Now I'm quite sure that you will disagree with this arm-chair analysis. Nevertheless, this is the impression that you are making upon me, a thoroughly uninvolved party. Do you not see how this undermines your position and that your response here seriously compromise your cause?

Your stubborn investment in your perception of how others perceive you far outweighs any benefit even the highest approbation might bestow on you in real life, the one that matters.

You persist in escalating this insignificant flame-war in an Internet backwater into all all out blitzkrieg, yet the result is astoundingly negative. But you continue with the obsessive posting of overwhelmingly negative response to your tormentors.

This suggests an attachment to your self-image that might be somewhat unhealthy for you. Hence my link to that study about how most people have severe misperceptions about themselves.

Not everyone you encounter is going to like you, especially on-line. This is a fact of life you seem unwilling to accept. I believe that this is going to cause problems for you in your real life, if it hasn't;t already done so.

In fact, I'd be really surprised if this has not already happened. I suspect that your inappropriate emphasis on your virtual-world relations indicates a problem in this area in the real world.

I would strongly urge you to seek some way to ameliorate this very negative propensity.
