MetaFilter Folding@Home anniversary. December 11, 2006 1:36 AM   Subscribe

MetaFilter has had a Folding@Home team for one year now. This seems like a good opportunity to promote it, in case people missed the post last year.

Folding@Home is a distributed computing project at Stanford University that is using computers to find the causes and cures for certain diseases. They have software available for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X, as well as a specific client that can take advantage of the power of ATI graphics cards (which yield some amazing results). See their FAQ for more information.

If you have a computer that spends a lot of time idling and would like to contribute, the MetaFilter team number is 48034.

I just joined your team. I couldn't find the team by the number you gave, but using "metafilter" as the team name in the search worked.

F@H is really stable under Linux and Windows - just set it up, and forget about it.

Sorry, knave, I'm on another team

Does it work? Have diseases been cured? Are there success stories posted somewhere?

Cool! I don't understand anything they're talking about, but it certainly looks impressive. I'll think about joining the MeFi team, if my older laptop would be of any use.

1) If I'm already signed up, can I still join the team?
2) I've noticed when bringing up the F@H window, it will crash for no reason. But it seems stable when running in the background. Anyone else seen this?

1) Yep, all you need to do is put our team number (48034) into your configuration panel.

2) I haven't seen this, but I hardly ever pull up the window.
